So, I took a few hours over the holidays to read this little book which for some reason Amazon was recommending to me.. (and I didn't want to post this in the Books section of the forum as its not a serious reading recommendation!)
And OK, I'll admit it, I was drawn in by the chapter titles, such as:
- Oranges, Witches and Vampires
- Red-Haired Royalty.. and Robin Hood
- Stargazers and Seafarers
- Halloween and Protestant Pumpkinheads
- Aliens and Atlantis (!)
Mercifully, the author doesn't claim to give credence to the Alien / Atlantean / Vampire connections..
But the book is, if anything, a fun repository of some things that have been said about us carrot tops..
This one from the Roman poet Martial regarding a slave named Zoilus made me chuckle:
Zoilus, with your red hair... short foot, and bleary eye, it would be miraculous if you were virtuous
