Baby rescued from toilet sewer pipe in China (see link for video)

Chinese firefighters have rescued a newborn boy from a sewer pipe below a squat toilet, sawing out an L-shaped section and then delicately dismantling it to free the cocooned baby, who greeted the rescuers with cries.

A tenant heard the baby's sounds in the public restroom of a residential building in Zhejiang province in eastern China on Saturday and notified authorities, according to the state-run news site Zhejiang News. A video of the two-hour rescue that followed was broadcast widely on Chinese news programs and websites late Monday and Tuesday.

When I read this story, I was struck not only by the horror of such an entry into the world for a new-born, but also the idea that this event is pretty symbolic of the state of humanity and our planet: babies are born today into a world based on and defined by not just the proverbial BS, but BS of a type that only humans could produce. A world where human life, in many places, has no more value than refuse. :(

How agree I am on this. I also saw this news today, and even by "knowing" how much our Humanity is weak, how hard the World is today for too many childrens, this poor baby born in terrific circumstances made me cry. It is so sad and so painfull...

And from what I heard today on Euronews, it looks that it is not an exception in China; but it also could be a kind of "disinformation", you know, China is "bad"... Chinese are "bad"... But what I see here, is the same thing than you, which is put in bold. Trough Euronews, they also explained than the mother (22 years old) wanted to hide she was pregnant, she so delivered in the "Turkish toilets" and she now is at the hospital because of grave complications. This is so sad too.
FWIW without know more on this.

May I ask what you mean by BS? Sorry if it has already been explained elsewhere...

She was trying to hide the pregnancy. For all we know, she could have been trying to hide the birth as well. Poor little guy. I wonder if it would have had a very different outcome for this baby if it had been a girl.

Yes, truly a sign of the times. What can be expected of creatures who do not have the instinct (or have lost it due to "education") to care for their young? Nothing but extinction.

Heartbreaking story. It's not exclusive to China though reasons may differ.

A world which seems to be getting progressively degenerate.

Yes, it's very symbolic. It's awful and it's so sad. When I read this story, my first thought was, "was it a girl?", maybe, because there are so many stories about newborn girls being killed due to China's one child policy. But, no. This was a boy. And then, I thought what kind of a woman would do such a thing?

More details about this woman here: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/mother-of-newborn-baby-no-59-found-trapped-in-chinese-sewer-pipe-is-traced-by-police-8635710.html
The mother of a newborn baby found trapped in a sewage pipe has been traced by police, according to Chinese state media.

The woman, whose name has not been released, had actually been present during the two-hour ordeal to rescue the baby from the four inch wide drainpipe, but did not admit to being the mother until confronted by police.

The 22-year-old is also believed to have been responsible for originally raising the alarm about the trapped child, telling authorities she had heard the sound of a baby crying coming from her apartment building’s plumbing system.

According to the state run Dushikuaibao newspaper, police became suspicious when they found baby toys and blood-stained toilet paper in the woman's rented apartment.

Although she originally denied having anything to do with the baby, she eventually confessed after police demanded she undergo a medical check.

The woman reportedly told police she could not afford an abortion and secretly delivered the child in the toilet on Saturday afternoon. She allegedly said she had tried to catch the baby but he had slipped into the sewage pipes.
....

Zhezhong News said the woman is a high school graduate who works at a restaurant in the Zhejiang province city of Jinhua. They say she became pregnant after a one-night stand with a man who later denied any responsibility. The woman reportedly did not reveal the pregnancy to her parents, adding she wanted to raise the child but had no idea how to do it.

The baby's mother told police she cleaned up the scene in the toilet after the delivery and that she had managed to hide her pregnancy by wearing loose clothes and tightly wrapping her abdomen, Zhezhong News said.

So, it seems, it was a bad situation and the outcome of that is even worse. I agree with one of the commenters to the article above, Susan J., who wrote:

People without support, education and the ability to see a way out of a situation that could be achieved with the aforementioned are a pitiful reminder of how little progress is being made for some while others gamble, fritter and appropriate the means for the least supported and rewarded in society to have a chance.

Until we value and support everyone in society then this kind of avoidable human calamity will occur, recur ad infinitum. The prejudice against those who make a mistake make this kind of occurence a certainty. Just think of what this young woman was guilty of : a one nightstand and the consequences with which she couldn't cope. Compare that with the 'mistakes' of any of those at the top of the food chain, in any of our banks, for example, and the consequences wrought by millions throughout the globalised capitalist world.

Edit=Quotes. :)

And plenty of negative food for others sts

What a horrible is this...throw the little, the innocent, the future for the toilet. We're getting closer to open global madness, I feel.
