best comedy movie

Nice topic--I need a little "comic relief" from life right now.
Although I know I am forgetting 2 or 3
Here are most of my favorites--in sort of order of preference:

Ground Hog Day (so many messages regarding soul growth--functions on many levels)
Stewart Saves His Family (a must for anyone from an alcoholic family "You'll laugh because they aren't your family--you"ll cry because they are.")
Crimes of the Heart (based on Southern Gothic play by Beth Henley, staring Jessica Lange, Diane Keaton, and Sissy Spasick as sisters)
Let It Ride (an obscure comedy with Richard Dreyfus and many embedded messages like GH Day)
Home For the Holidays (Holly Hunter and Robert Downey)
Almost Famous
Little Miss Sunshine
The Darjeeling Limited
Garden State
Waking Ned Devine
The Full Monty
A League of Their Own
Harold and Maude
Galaxy Quest
Shaun of the Dead

my 3 favorite comedy's at this moment in time are animations.

#1 Shrek for ever after - really good, eddie murphy and mike myers
#2 Despicable Me - steve corell, jason segel, russel brand
#3 How to train your Dragon. ( really good lotsa good para - moralisms and moral allegories) very well done. <6d inspired maybe>

R.E.D . is good too but u gotta have a dark sense of humor 4 that one, bruce willis reminds me of his 'moonlighting days with cybil shepard". good one, not animated.

it may just be me, animation films are exceptional, amazing works of art.

here is short clip from Despicable Me, the bedtime story.

Good Shtuff!

For my money, their is no better comedy than Young Frankenstein. The scene with Peter Boyle and Gene Hackman alone is pure gold and an all time classic IMO - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw2IIU0a9qw

I'm glad to hear someone else say that! Madelyn Kahn is hilarious, first as the pouting, neglected narcissist and later, as the "satisfied" bride of Frankenstein. A close contender is "High Anxiety", Mel Brooks' parody of Hitchcock's "Vertigo" Cloris Leachman plays her role as stern Nurse Diesel to the hilt.

I'm glad to see some love for the Marx Brothers classics like Duck Soup. I also liked Animal Crackers, but many other of their movies are hilarious as well. The humor has aged surprisingly well, too. I know there are many modern comedies worth your time, but people should check out the classics too. they're still great! ;D

Speaking of comedy classics, I would also recommend the Buster Keaton movies, in particular The General. I wouldn't have believed how absolutely hilarious that movie is if I hadn't seen it myself.

Nice collections. I never watched Young Frankestein, but now I am curious.

Some of the movies I remember that made me LOL are: Birdcage, As Good as it Gets, Zoolander, Galaxy Quest, Meet the parents, A Bug's Life, Austin Powers Trilogy, Legally Blonde, Dogma & My Big Fat Greek Wedding :D

Here is my top twenty-five:

1) Noises Off

3) Stranger Than Fiction (only Will Ferrell movie that I enjoyed)
4) Ferris Bueller's Day Off
5) Galaxy Quest

8) The Truman Show
9) Beetle Juice
10) O' Brother Where Art Thou?

19) The Naked Gun trilogy
20) Liar, Liar
21) Groundhog Day

Completely agree with that. I'm not crazy about Will Ferrell either but thought he was good in that film.

Plenty of movies on your list that I really enjoyed.

As Good as it Gets was very nice, though for me I see it more as drama. Zoolander and Austin Powers Trilogy are movies that I thought I would not enjoy at all but, surprise surprise, it took some pretty loud unexpected laughs out of me! They are also on my LOL list. Also enjoyed Bugs' life, and I will add AntZ to that.
Now Meet the parents, for some reason, was one of the movies that made me laugh the most until today. I don't find it particularly extraordinary, but it seems to press all the right buttons in me (besides the Muppets). And then I saw the sequel, Meet the Fockers, and that made me laugh even more!
Haven't seen the others you've mentioned yet.

Good to hear! I have this movie on my list.

And yeah, also enjoyed Galaxy Quest, Airplane, Dogma, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Monty Python movies and others that were mentioned. And actually, yesterday rewatched The Princess Bride :)

Two movies came to mind, both comedies: Lost in America starring Albert Brooks and Julie Hagerty and The Muse also starring Albert Brooks with Sharon Stone and Andie MacDowell. :D

I thought The Ref was very funny. Excellent depiction of a dysfunctional family (nothing brings it out like Christmas dinner), set to rights by a petty criminal who's taken refuge from the police in their house.

My top five are:
- Monty Python's Holy Grail
- Hot Shots
- Dumb and Dumber
- Zoolander
- Caddyshack

A sixth - Trading Places
