Some very funny movies were mentioned, already. There's a bunch I've never seen here. This is a good list to turn to for anyone in the mood for comedy.

I rarely watch movies anymore. But some really good old comedies that weren't mentioned yet just off the top of my head, in case anyone wants to check them out.

1. Blue Beard's Eighth Wife -- directed by Ernst Lubitsch
2. Trouble in Paradise -- directed by Ernst Lubitsch
3. Ninotchka -- directed by Ernst Lubitsch
4. To Be or Not To Be -- (1942) by Lubitsch (Although the Mel Brooks remake is good, I'd say the original is better)
5. His Girl Friday -- directed by Howard Hawks
6. Bringing Up Baby -- directed by Howard Hawks

There's probably a lot of comedies I can add if I sit and think about it, but are likely to be known by most. But for those who are in the mood for laughs and light, uplifting entertainment, the above films are excellent and with a higher likelihood that many on the forum haven't seen them. "Some Like It Hot" was mentioned already, and if you liked that film, I'm inclined to think that you're going to love the above list. And by the way, Billy Wilder, the director of Some Like It Hot, was originally one of the screenwriters for Lubitsch directed movies. Lubitsch was a truly great comedy director. I'm less impressed with the couple of his dramas I've seen.

If anyone is in the mood for lots of back to back burst-out-laughing type of movies, old screw ball comedies and old and new spoofs are probably the way to go. :)

Ever since I was 14, one of my favourite comedy movies has been Dead Men don't wear Plaid with Steve Martin (it's a film-noir spoof where scenes from real film noir movies are intercut, making for very improbable and outrageous scenes. Also, I don't know what's up with Steve Martin (same with Jim Carrey, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell and Michael Cera), but that guy can basically read the telephone book and I would find it funny.

- Zoolander
- Tropic Thunder (Nam movie spoof with Ben Stiller - totally OTT)
- Meet the Parents
- Ace Ventura movies
- The Hangover
- Spinal Tap
- Dumb and Dumber
- Kingpin
- Dodgeball
- Year One
- Anchorman
- Parenthood
- Papy fait de la Résistance (for French-speaking members): a spoof movie about La Résistance during the second World War that I think is hilarious, I've seen it more than 30 times)

On TV: Seinfeld, Parks and Recreation, Arrested Development, Father Ted (a show about Irish priests), Modern family, 30 Rock, Futurama, My Name is Earl, Flight of the Conchords, That 70's show, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Grounded for life. And some episodes of The Young Ones and Little Britain (the English have a very special sense of humour, there's nothing quite like it... :D)

Very very silly stuff, I' afraid...

Thansk for that list SeekinTruth. Watching some of the trailers gave me a nostalgia for some good classic comedies. I will see if I can find them.

Other comedies that I liked:

Tootsie
Nacho Libre
Wag the Dog
Who framed Roger Rabbit (already mentioned)

You're welcome, Gertrudes. I wish you luck finding them; they used to be widely available years ago for rental, except for Blue Beard's Eighth Wife, for some reason, and that one just might be the funniest one among very funny movies. Happy viewing.

Here are some more that should be much more widely known:

Spoof / Spoofy / Unusual or Offbeat Humor
In the Soup
Fletch
Better Off Dead
Saturday the 14th
Christmas Story
Johnny Dangerously

Those are very funny shows. You may also enjoy Curb Your Enthusiasm, Louie, and Community. Louie and Curb are my favorite comedies around right now, as Larry David and Louis CK are just fantastic comedians who both do a lot improv work on their shows.

Napoleon Dynamite might be a generational thing. I watched it with my kids (now mid-twenties). I thought it was amusing, but no great shakes. My kids on the other hand, were rolling on the floor practically the whole time. I guess you had to go to high school then to really appreciate it. The dance sequence was hilarious though :)

Nacho Libre is by the same people, I really enjoyed that it is totally infantile but in a good way.

Curb your Enthusiasm is one of the best comedy shows ever but I can imagine some people being offended by it. The last series has an Israeli/Palestinian restaurant conflict which i just couldn't find funny. Not a great subject for comedy. Generally though the improvisation is fantastic, especially in the first few series which aren't as far fetched.

A lot of my favorites have been mentioned so far, but I need to include Best in Show and This Is Spinal Tap.

Yes, definitely have to add those Christopher Guest movies. I would add his "A Mighty Wind" which is like Spinal Tap for 60s folk music.

I don't know what it is about Tropic Thunder, but I've seen it countless times and it still has me rolling. Those spoof trailers at the beginning, Tom Cruise dancing to Flo Rida, and Robert Downey Jr. never 'breaking character'... I hated it when I first saw it, but it really grew on me. So OTT!

Also, I think I've seen every episode of My Name is Earl about twenty times, and it never fails to make me laugh!

Indeed these are great shows too, I just haven't seen many episodes yet. I like Louie CK but as a stand-up comedian, but sometimes he goes really far, i must say! That guy is nuts! He is a great actor too, imo (nice cameo in Parks and Recs).

The scene with Ben Stiller and the panda, I thought I would never stop laughing, it's so OTT.

Among the good movies mentioned in this thread I really like Monty Python and the Holy Grail. But I don't think anyone mentioned Dr. Strangelove, which is one of my favorite comedies. Although I didn't expect much of this movie, the first time I saw it I was very impressed of how a movie about a nuclear war which depicted lots of "political action" could be so funny. Sometimes it has a more "in your face" kind of humor but also a lot of more subtle humor. It is a very unusual comedy and I think it is a great movie.

Here is a brief entry from Wikipedia:

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, commonly known as Dr. Strangelove, is a 1964 black comedy film which satirized the nuclear scare. It was directed, produced, and co-written by Stanley Kubrick, starred Peter Sellers and George C. Scott, and featured Sterling Hayden, Keenan Wynn, and Slim Pickens. The film was loosely based on Peter George's Cold War thriller novel Red Alert, also known as Two Hours to Doom.

The story concerns an unhinged United States Air Force general who orders a first strike nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. It follows the President of the United States, his advisors, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a Royal Air Force (RAF) officer as they try to recall the bombers to prevent a nuclear apocalypse. It separately follows the crew of one B-52 as they try to deliver their payload.
