Bible reading for a Funeral

The Living Force
Hey Gang, I've been asked to read a bible verse for my grandmother's funreal. It's next Wednesday. She was great, she lived to 93, had an awesome family and started to physically degrade once my grandpop passed a few years ago. She was in a nursing home, which she disliked, and her mind was slowly fading. It was tragic to watch, so in a way I'm relieved that she's passed on.

It's going to be rough for my mom, as it was her mother, so I wanted to pick something appropriate. Googling isn't turning up too many things that resonate so I figured I'd see if anyone had a verse they liked or felt was appropriate.

I like this one...

1 Corinthians 15:50-55
I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed- in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"

But it's a little weird with the wording, and probably over most people's heads.

This one's good too, and a little more general.

Ecclesiastes 3: 1-15
There is an appointed time for everything,
and a time for every affair under the heavens.
A time to give birth, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant.
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to tear down, and a time to build.
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance.
A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather them;
a time to embrace,
and a time to be far from embraces.
A time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away.
A time to rend, and a time to sew;
a time to be silent, and a time to speak.
A time to love, and a time to hate;
a time of war, and a time of peace.
What profit have workers from their toil?
I have seen the business
that God has given to mortals to be busied about.
God has made everything appropriate to its time,
but has put the timeless into their hearts
so they cannot find out,
from beginning to end,
the work which God has done.
I recognized that there is nothing better
than to rejoice and to do well during life.
Moreover, that all can eat and drink
and enjoy the good of all their toil—
this is a gift of God.
I recognized that
whatever God does will endure forever;
there is no adding to it, or taking from it.
Thus has God done that he may be revered.
What now is
has already been;
what is to be,
already is:
God retrieves what has gone by.

The Word of the Lord

I think I'll do the second one. Any suggestions?

ADMIN NOTE: corrected spelling of "funeral" in subject field.

Re: Bible reading for a Funreal

I'd go with the second one as well. May your Grandma rest in peace. :hug:

Re: Bible reading for a Funreal

Hi Puck. I`m sure you have many great memories of your grandmother, may she rest in peace. I really like the second one too. I don`t know if you`ve heard the second one put to music by Pete Seeger, Judy Collins and the Byrds. Here`s the version by Judy Collins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aure96vJNMk. Sorry for your lose, Puck. :hug2:

I'm partial to 1st Corinthians 13.

May your Grandma rest well, Puck, and your mother feel comfort.

Whatever you read will have heartfelt meaning. :hug:

Sorry for the loss of your Grandmother. I understand your feelings of being grateful that she is truly in a better place and at peace in a way we cannot
experience in this world, but don't be too surprised if waves of grief and mourning rise up unexpectedly now and then when you might least expect it.
Take care Puck.

Thanks gang, I'll send them all off to my mom and see which she prefers. I really do not like participating in catholic masses, but if it'll help make things easier for my mom I guess I'll grin and bear it.

My condolences to your family my friend. :flowers: I'm kinda partial to the second one myself.

It does make things easier for the family I think and it's worth it. I was against it myself, as you may remember, but as it turned out my mother was much better off with our participation and support. It was only a small portion of my time donated and it felt good to give something back to my mom for all the years she's put up with me.

I'm sorry for your loss Puck.

I've been forced to sit through the odd Church service as well... I tended up just treating it in an exercise of discernment and sifting signal from noise. Most who become preachers are taught charisma and the whole smorgasbord of emotional hooks, which makes it more rewarding if during your listening you come across a snippet of scripture or a saying of his that's actually true or at least not as false as the rest of it. For what it's worth. :cool2:

Hello Puck, I am sorry for your loss.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted.

A couple other tidbits I like outta Ecclesiastes 3
4) A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
17) [...] for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.
21) Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
22) Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?

Oopsie, I now see same posting but in the New International Version. I 'll post anyway since this is different...

One more...
John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
