Bird strike leaves MASSIVE hole in United Airlines jet as it lands at Denver air

According to my exhusband, a flight engineer for the USAF for over 20 years, the nose area of jet planes is usually made of some sort of compound--graphite maybe? because it houses radar equipment that metal would interfere with, which makes it the most vulnerable part of the aircraft. I was always told by flight crew that bird strikes do serious damage and can and have taken many a plane down. The AF goes to extensive measures to keep birds from nesting near the flightline and to keep track of the birds when they are in the air--flights are regularly delayed and diverted due to big migratory birds.
