Some people on Twitter speculate that the downed F-15 was a cover-up for a larger ground operation that failed. The reason was that you don't need 2 C-130 planes to rescue a couple of pilots. You would need them to carry special forces for a ground operation though.

Actually, this makes sense. Some of the crash site footage looks like a large battle field with few areas in very black (Charred) rather than airplane crash with bebries spread across. Probably US bombed the location by themselves to remove any debries for possible technology leak ( through reverse engineering). Hard to know yet.

Iran is saying they bombed their own downed pilots, so the Iranians couldn't capture them.
