Bridge Collapse in Genoa, Italy: What We Know So Far

According to Italian police, Bridge Morandi on the A10 highway near Genoa suddenly collapsed at around 11:50 local time (09:50 GMT). A 100-meter-long section of the road vanished, burying people and cars under the heavy rubble. The highway, which linked the city of Genoa with the airport and the A7 highway to Milan, was blocked due to the accident.

The authorities immediately dispatched emergency service personnel in order to rescue people from under the wreckage.

According to the latest police data, at least 22 people have died, while seven have been injured. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, while addressing the issue, reported that up to 200 firefighters and other emergency service workers are now conducting rescue operations at the site.
At least two people have been found alive and extracted from the deadly trap, however, some reports say about 8 rescued by the firefighters.

Morandi Bridge was built in the 1960s; it is over a kilometer long and 90 meters high. At the moment there is no information about the possible cause of the accident.

A collapse of a motorway bridge in the northern Italian city of Genoa has claimed the lives of "dozens" of people, Genoa's ambulance service director said.

A motorway bridge has collapsed in Genoa, Italy local media reported on Tuesday. Several cars have fallen into the subsequent chasm.

"The scale is epochal. There are dozens of dead among those who fell from the bridge or got trapped under the rubble," Francesco Bermano, Genoa's ambulance service director said, as quoted by the Adnkronors news agency.

Italian police have published a shocking video of the bridge's collapse. Internet users have published photos and videos of the aftermath on Twitter:

A motorway bridge over the northern Italian city crumbled on Tuesday during torrential rains, leading to the deaths of at least 11 people and injuries of at least seven people, including children, despite earlier claims of dozens of people being injured. The incident has been deemed by Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli as "an immense tragedy."

The video of the elevated road collapse's aftermath has been uploaded on Twitter, showing parts of the bridge lying in ruins on the ground. The bridge, considered to be a major link between the Italian Riviera and France's southern coast collapsed over a river, railroad tracks and buildings.

According to an eyewitness speaking to the media outlet Sky Italia, "eight or nine" vehicles were on the bridge at the moment of the collapse, adding that the incident was an "apocalyptic scene."

A highway bridge in the heart of Genoa collapsed on Tuesday, killing at least 20 people as it dropped dozens of vehicles, and tons of concrete and steel, onto a building, streets and railroad tracks below, in a disaster that raised concerns about the state of Italy’s aging infrastructure.

Just before noon, the roadway fell as much as 45 meters, or about 148 feet, taking about three dozen cars and three trucks with it, said Angelo Borrelli, chief of the Civil Protection Department.

“The image is truly apocalyptic,” Matteo Pucciarelli, a journalist reporting on the disaster, said in a video posted to the website of the newspaper La Repubblica. “It’s as if a bomb had fallen on this very important artery.”

With the nation riveted by news coverage, and amateur photos and video on social media, the calamity presented the first real test of Italy’s new government, a coalition of populist parties that was formed only months ago. They rode to power on a wave of anti-establishment anger, but the coalition is led by people who had little to no experience governing, and now must demonstrate that they can manage a crisis and the scrutiny that comes with it.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte traveled to Genoa and visited the disaster scene. Genoa’s Public Prosecutor’s Office said it would open a criminal inquiry, examining whether the collapse was due to negligence, and federal authorities indicated that they would investigate, too.

Danilo Toninelli, the national transport minister, said on Tuesday that the government had been “given a mandate” to improve the condition of the country’s aging infrastructure, including bridges.

“Many need ordinary maintenance,” he told the state broadcaster, RAI News, “to avoid tragedies of this kind.”

The Liguria region’s councilor for civil protection and infrastructure, Giacomo Giampedrone, said in a telephone interview that the bridge and its maintenance were the responsibility of Autostrade per l’Italia, a highway operator controlled by Atlantia, an Italian holding company whose main shareholder is the Benetton family.

Autostrade per l’Italia and Atlantia did not respond to emails requesting comment, and their media offices were closed on Tuesday. Atlantia shares fell by 5.39 percent on the Milan stock market on Tuesday.

Autostrade’s director for the area of Genoa, Stefano Marigliani, told the Italian news agency ANSA that the collapse of the bridge “was unexpected and sudden with respect to the monitoring that the bridge was subject to. There was no forewarning,” he said.

The bridge carried the A10 highway — a major east-west artery through the port city that extends west along the coastline to the border with France — across the Polcevera River. It was one of two just major highway bridges that span that waterway, in the western part of the city, and officials warned that the loss of the crossing could significantly affect the movement of people and goods.

A spokesman for the civil protection agency in Liguria, the region that includes Genoa, said the collapse had missed some nearby houses but had crushed part of a warehouse belonging to the city’s garbage collection agency; it was unclear whether anybody had been inside.

What a tragedy!

Apparently a flash of light was seen, and some claim it was lightning, but it could also be a power outburst due to the bridge collapsing?

It's a real tragedy and considering that Italy has some 60,000 bridges under inspection (and bridge Morandi wasn't one of them!), it's even more worrying.

As one person said on TV yesterday, the bridge collapsed like it was flour.

An Italian article gives a good picture on present condition of tens of thousands of bridges that were built in a similar way between the '50s and the 60's in Italy. They give an explanation as to what happens to these bridges over time:

"These bridges are made of a steel structure covered with concrete. Concrete is only a cover that serves to protect ferrous materials from water and therefore from oxidation, but concrete has a useful life, after which humidity flows and a process of carbonation starts, which initiates oxidation that causes corrosion. Did you notice when black stripes appear on the concrete? That's the iron oxide that's coming out. It takes ten or fifteen years for this process to take place. In the end, everything looks okay outside, but the armor inside disappeared".

Just out of curiosity, I looked up the etymology of Genoa:

From Latin Genua, as the city was known by the ancient Ligurians; probably from the Ancient Ligurian word for "knee", from Proto-Indo-European *ǵnéwo- (“knee”), a thematic derivative of Proto-Indo-European *ǵónu, in this sense "angle," from its geographical position, thus akin to Geneva.

city in Italy, Italian Genova, from Latin Genua, perhaps from a PIE root meaning "curve, bend," which could make it a cognate of Geneva. Other theories hold it to be perhaps from janua "gate," or from the Italic god Janus. Adjective forms in English included Middle English Genoway (also in plural, Janeways), c. 1400, from Old French Genoveis, from Italian Genovese. In later English, Genoese (1550s); Genovese (c. 1600); Genoan (c. 1600); Genovesian (1620s).

Janus: ancient Italic deity, to the Romans the guardian god of portals, doors, and gates; patron of beginnings and endings, c. 1500, from Latin Ianus, literally "gate, arched passageway," perhaps from PIE root *ei- "to go" (cognates: Sanskrit yanah "path," Old Church Slavonic jado "to travel"). He is shown as having two faces, one in front the other in back (they may represent sunrise and sunset and reflect an original role as a solar deity). His temple in Rome was closed only in times of peace. Related: Janian.

The city's current name derives from the Latin word meaning "knee" (genu; plural, genua) but according to other theories could derive from Janus, because Genoa like the god Janus has two faces: a face that looks at the sea and the other turned to the mountains

Genoa to me symbolizes several civilizations living together, a "bridge" between cultures, liberals at some point, power games, etc. Kind of symbolic in spite of this tragedy seemingly just being due to human negligence. We can't abscribe too much symbolism to things randomly, of course, but I still found it interesting given the current geo-socio-political climate, FWIW.

Genova, crolla il ponte Morandi: 31 morti, anche tre bambini
Ponte Morandi, the bridge of the A10 motorway that connects Genoa to its western side and then to Savona and Ventimiglia, collapsed this morning. At 11.50 am a stretch of the viaduct suspended at several tens of meters was mainly due to a structural collapse on the inhabited area below. According to the Civil Defense at the time of the collapse of the bridge, around thirty vehicles and ten heavy vehicles were in transit. Four extracted people live from under the rubble. The civil defense reports of 26 confirmed victims, according to sources of the Fire Brigade the budget would already be 35 dead. At the Policlinico San Martino 22 bodies have already been composed, including a 10-year-old child. According to data released by the Liguria Region, of the official deceased, 23 were found on the spot, two extracts later and one person died in the operating room. Fifteen wounded between San Martino, Galliera and Villa Scassi, including 9 in red. A dozen missing.

Among the dead, there are also two employees of the Amiu, the environmental company of the Municipality of Genoa. These are two drivers who had registered for work and were then untraceable. Apparently, they would have been driving one of the two Porter vans and the deluge trucks that had been crushed by the rubble of the bridge in the Rialzo depot. Rescuers' research is concentrated in an area close to the railway where a sort of crater has formed. It is estimated that there are about thirty vehicles below.

The Genoa Public Prosecutor "is ready to open a dossier for multiple homicide and culpable disaster". The head prosecutor of Genoa Francesco Cozzi explains that the dossier will be borne by unknown persons, "because we do not yet know the perimeter of the tragedy".

"We are worried that the number of victims and injured will increase because the debris removal of the fallen part of the bridge is still underway," said head of the Civil Protection Department, Angelo Borrelli. No people would be involved in the houses or in transit under the structure, but only the occupants of the fallen vehicles.

The 118 hijacked all available ambulances. "The dimension is epoch-making, dozens of dead among those who fell from the viaduct who got stuck under the rubble, the firefighters along with the sanitary facilities are pulling out the patients, someone has already arrived in the hospitals of Genoa. of Lombardy and Piedmont, all hospitals are available, we are working but at this moment we do not yet have the full size of the problem ". This was stated by Francesco Bermano, director of the 118 in Genoa.

During the rescue, a gas leak forced the firefighters to evacuate the intervention area. There are a total of 440 people forced to leave their homes, a number that could increase: the Municipality of Genoa makes it known that evictions are still underway. The Civil Defense has so far evacuated 11 buildings and the situation is under constant monitoring. A part of evacuated citizens has found accommodation in an autonomous way, 34 people are housed at the Civic Center Buranello, a structure made available by the Municipality of Genoa together with 10 people rescued on the highway. Eleven people will arrive during the evening. The same proven earthquake procedures have been implemented. The highway technicians are checking the tightness of the rest of the bridge. "There is a risk that other parts of the bridge may collapse," reports one of the rescuers at work near the collapsed bridge. "For this reason we have displaced people from all the surrounding buildings".

THE INJURED

Seven serious injured people arrived at the Villa Scassi hospital in Genoa: "There are four red, traumatized, traumatized red and spinal column codes and three fractured subjects," said Asl 3 General Manager Carlo Bottaro. also know that two of the seriously injured were overwhelmed in their homes crushed by the structure, but the situation is constantly changing. "There are then traumatized psychic, that is women and children who witnessed the collapse of the bridge" added Bottaro. set up, for these patients, an ad hoc psychological and psychiatric unit.

Among the wounded of the collapse, a woman of about 40 years, Rita Giancristofaro, of Trieste but originally from Abruzzo, has undergone surgery during these hours. Hospitalized, her condition would not be particularly serious. According to what has been learned, he was only passing through Genoa, together with his companion Federico Cerne, 34, who was also injured and underwent surgery. Their conditions do not cause particular concern. "The wounded - explains Bottaro - have reported cranial traumas or crushing". Within a few hours, about fifty people showed up at the Villa Scassi's transfusion center to donate blood. The stocks, however, reassure from the hospital, "are congruous".

The bodies of the victims will be transferred to the Specialty area of the San Martino Polyclinic for the identification of the ritual. After identification, they will be moved to the morgue of the polyclinic.

The collapsed section, several tens, perhaps hundreds of meters, passes over a densely inhabited area. Most of the viaduct crashed on the bed of the Polcevera stream, but huge tracts have fallen on houses, on sheds and on the streets below. In the collapse, the warehouses of Ansaldo Energia, one of the main industries for energy production plants in Italy, have also been missed.

More than 300 firefighters are operating with 92 vehicles on the rubble of the collapsed viaduct. Sending operational sections, personal use and dog units from Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. So far, recovery operations have involved cars that have not been crushed by debris. "Now the probably most difficult part begins, we are considering making headmasters to start digging". Rescuers involved in the recovery of survivors and injured report this.

MATTARELLA: "SCARY AND ABSOLUTE DISGRACY"

"It is a catastrophe that has struck Genoa and Italy in its entirety. On unarmed people and families have suffered a frightful and absurd disgrace. The first thought - my as well as all Italians - goes to the victims, the injured, the suffering and to the anxieties of their families, to those who are crying for their loved ones today, I wish to express my deepest sympathy, my closeness and, at the same time, the solidarity of the Republic ". The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella writes in a note. "This is the moment of common commitment, to face the emergency, to assist the wounded, to support those affected by pain, which must be followed by a serious and severe examination of the causes of what happened", continues the president. "No authority can evade an exercise of full responsibility: the families of so many victims demand it, the communities affected by an event that will leave their mark, the conscience of our national society demands it." The Italians - Mattarella says - are entitled modern and efficient infrastructures that accompany everyday life with safety: the controls, the culture of prevention and the intelligent modernization of the communications system must always be at the center of the action of public institutions and private concessionaires, all levels "

COUNT IN GENOA: "MONITORING TO AVOID NEW TRAGEDIES"

The President of the Conte Council arrived in Genoa around 6.30 pm. With him the prefect Fiamma Spena and the head of the Civil Protection Angelo Borrelli. "It was important to come in person to understand what happened - he said - it will take some time to ascertain the causes: a tragedy of this kind is inconceivable in a modern country like ours". After a visit to the disaster site, the premier went to the prefecture. "We must immediately plan an intervention in an extraordinary way", he added at the end of the inspection. "We have to launch a monitoring plan for all the infrastructures, and we absolutely must not allow such tragedies to happen again." Already in the afternoon Conte thanked the rescue car in a post on Facebook, in which he said he was "deeply affected by the tragedy that affected Genoa" and expressed the "closeness of the whole Government to the victims of this tragedy and their relatives. ". The Minister of Infrastructures Danilo Toninelli, the Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini and the Minister of Labor Luigi Di Maio will also be in Genoa tomorrow.

SALVINI: "COLLIVOLI IN GALERA AND PAGHINO"

? "For the tragedy of Genoa, given that Italian disasters without leaders, without guilty, we have too many, I will do everything that is humanly and governmentally possible to come up with the names and surnames of those who have gone wrong. pay all the way ". Thus the Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini, speaking to the citizens in the province of Messina.

THE IMPACT ON THE VIABILITY

Autostrade reports on its site on the A10 Genoa-Savona the section between the A7 Milan-Genoa and Genoa Aerooporto junction in both directions has been closed. On the A10 Genoa-Savona between the junction for the A7 Genoa-Serravalle and Genoa Aereoporto, in both directions it was necessary to close the section. Within the closed section traffic is blocked with queues. Furthermore, for this reason queues have formed on the A12 Genoa-Rosignano Marittimo towards Genoa, between Genoa ESt and the Bivio for the A7 towards Genoa and on the A7 between Bolzaneto and the junction for the A10 Genoa-Savona. All the emergency vehicles are on site. The technical table of "Viabilità Italia" was activated at the Viminale, the National Coordination Center to tackle crisis situations in the field of traffic.

Around 14 o'clock the Italian railway network reported that the circulation on some lines between Genoa Rivarolo and Genova Sampierdarena, which had led to the interruption of trains from 11.40 am, was resumed on the Genoa node. In detail the Genoa-Savona-Ventimiglia line was re-activated and the Genoa Principe-Arquata Scrivia square (in Turin and Milan); the Ovada-Genoa Piazza Principe line is reactivated with slowdowns and some cancellations of regional trains while the circulation between Genoa Borzoli and Genoa Piazza Principe is still suspended.

The State Police advises not to drive along the motorways and to choose ordinary roads. He recommends avoiding the areas adjacent to the collapse of the bridge in order not to hinder rescue operations.

Railway circulation still suspended between the stations of Genoa Borzoli and Genoa Sampierdarena on the line for Ovada. Trenitalia has activated a substitute service with buses between the Alessandria area and Genoa Voltri. On the other hand, one travels on Genoa Piazza Principe - Arquata Scrivia (in the direction of Turin and Milan), but with an average delay of 60 minutes - with peaks of up to 120 - and some cancellations of regional trains.

"The Morandi Viaduct immediately presented several problematic aspects, in addition to the increase in the estimated construction costs". It is the assessment that the engineer Antonio Brencich, associate professor of reinforced concrete buildings at the University of Genoa, makes the bridge collapsed today in Genoa in an article published by Ingegneri.info on July 29 two years ago. The observations of the engineer contained in the article are strictly technical, but refer to the fact that the bridge, built in the early '60s, was from the first decades "object of deep maintenance". In 2009 there was a hypothesis of controlled demolition of the viaduct, which would have required 8 to 12 months. "La Gronda di Genova: a summary of the hypotheses of the route" is the study that Autostrade per l'Italia had carried out together with the engineering company Spea and published in February 2009. The report, drafted 9 years ago, warned about the potentials risks. "The grafting junction on the highway to Serravalle, at the eastern end of the viaduct - reads - produces daily, at peak times, queues of vehicles and the volume reached by traffic causes an intense degradation of the structure subjected to considerable stress. Viaduct has therefore been the subject of continuous maintenance for years ".

"The whole Morandi bridge will be demolished with serious repercussions on traffic and problems for citizens and companies", said Deputy Minister for Infrastructure Edoardo Rixi, this afternoon in Genoa at the Civil Protection office. "A bridge like that does not collapse for a thunderbolt or for a storm, the culprits must be found". The economic consequences of the collapse of the viaduct are still incalculable, masi predict serious damage to the port and to traffic. At the end of 2018 the construction of the Ponente tollgate should have started, a sort of ring road with a passage on Val Polcevera moved north of the collapsed viaduct. The Morandi, in the plans, would have been destined for local traffic.

CONSOLIDATION WORKS

In relation to the collapse of part of the Polcevera viaduct on the A10, Autostrade per l'Italia reports that "on the structure - dating back to the 1960s - work was underway to consolidate the viaduct slab and that, as planned, it had been installed a bridge crane to allow maintenance activities to take place ". "The work and the status of the viaduct were subject to constant observation and supervision by the Tronco Management of Genoa", assure the Autostrade.

The CEO of Autostrade per l'Italia, Giovanni Castellucci, in answering questions about the alleged danger of the bridge, said: "I do not know that the bridge was dangerous and that it should be closed". Castellucci said that he is going there and that he can not add anything else than what was written in the press release.

After the collapse of the title of Atlantia, the parent company of Autostrade per l'Italia, which until then was flat in Piazza Affari, was suspended in a volatility auction. It closed losing 5.39%, burning over 1.1 billion capitalization.

THE WITNESSES

Some witnesses who were in the car near the Morando bridge before the collapse saw "lightning strike the bridge". "It was just after 11:30 when we saw the lightning strike the bridge - said Pietro M. all'Asa - and we saw the bridge going down". The lightning hypothesis "has not been confirmed or confirmed during the operational committee", explains the Civil Protection. The director of the 118, Francesco Bermano, said: "We have received many phone calls from citizens because it came down some stuff from the bridge".

THE REACTION OF THE CITY

The mayor, Marco Bucci, told the many Genoese voices worried by the repercussions on the city: "Genoa is not on its knees, it will react and continue its growth path". Bucci, who spoke at the end of the meeting with the Civil Protection, thanked "the many Italian Municipalities and companies that have made themselves available to help us". The archbishop of Genoa, Angelo Bagnasco, announced that the diocese will offer initial hospitality to all displaced persons. "We know that there are displaced people from different homes.Today, there will be prayers in all the parishes of Genoa for the wounded victims and for the whole city".

Italy bridge collapse: Here's what engineers think might have gone wrong
A huge rescue effort is underway in the Italian city of Genoa after a major motorway bridge collapsed, killing at least 35 people and injuring many others.

Prosecutors said they are opening an investigation into the incident, but what exactly caused the Morandi Bridge to fall down remains unknown.

Here's what experts think might have gone wrong.

The working theory is that it was a 'structural failure'

Early speculation focused on the structural weakness of the span, with Italy's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte saying authorities were working on the theory the collapse was due to a "structural failure".

The highway bridge was built in 1967 and the design has been criticised in the past.

Antonio Brencich, a professor specialising in reinforced concrete construction at the University of Genoa, called the span "a failure of engineering" during a 2016 interview with Italian media organisation Primocanale.

"But there will be a time when the cost of maintenance will be higher than a replacement."

The Italian CNR civil engineering society said that structures dating from when the Morandi Bridge was built had surpassed their lifespan.

It cited previous accidents: a bridge that fell in April 2017 in the northern province of Cuneo, crushing a police car after the officers and driver had barely managed to get away in time; and an overpass in the northern city of Lecco that collapsed under exceptional weight, crushing a car and killing the driver.

CNR called for a Marshall Plan to repair or replace tens of thousands of bridges and viaducts built in the 1950s and 1960s.

But updating and reinforcing the bridges would be more expensive than destroying and rebuilding them with technology that could last a century.

There are also suggestions there was a lack of maintenance

Italian Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli told state television the disaster pointed to a lack of maintenance.

"There has not been sufficient maintenance and checks, and safety work for many bridges and viaducts and bridges in Italy constructed — almost all — during the 1960s," he said.

The highway operator said work to shore up the bridge's foundation was being carried out at the time of the collapse.

Autostrade, a unit of the infrastructure group Atlantia controlled by the Benetton family, manages the section of the toll highway that collapsed.

"The collapse was unexpected and unpredictable," Stefano Marigliani, the Autostrade official responsible for the Genoa area, said.

"The bridge was constantly monitored and supervised well beyond what the law required."

He said there had been no indication that the bridge was dangerous.

Mr Toninelli has also said that if negligence played a role "whoever made a mistake must pay".

Autostrade said it would work with investigators, and that it was already assessing how to rebuild the bridge.

Corrosion or weather conditions are also being considered

Some engineers have suggested the weather along with corrosion could have contributed.

While associate professor in structural mechanics at the University of Southampton in the UK, Mehdi Kashani, said weather could have also played a factor.

He said maintenance issues and pressure from "dynamic loads" — such as traffic and wind — could have resulted in "fatigue damage in bridge components"

What caused the Genoa bridge collapse? Here's what experts think could have gone wrong

Interesting. This tragedy seemed quite symbolic to me also, another possible indicator of the societal/civilisation collapse that appears to be occurring. Although this event was 'unexpected' to many, a few people had warned of this for some time.

I share some data on the viaduct Polcevera (Viaduct #Morandi), in Genoa, Italy taken from the construction report Vol. 21, No. 200 May 1968
Translated from Spanish by Microsoft
It can not be thought to be a maintenance issue since major maintenance was performed over the years, the expertise will indicate the real reason, but unfortunately the problems began since its construction, they called the bridge sick

Miracle ?

Horrible, 39 people dead and this is nothing comparing to what most likely awaits us due to weather and economic problems. It's crazy but I always think it could have been worse (when something like that happens) like maybe some force ameliorated it so the whole damn bridge didn't collapse.

The first funeral services for victims of a collapsed motorway bridge in the Italian city of Genoa will be held this Saturday, local media reported.

First Funerals for Genoa Bridge Collapse Victims Set for Saturday – Reports

The farewell ceremony for 11 of those killed in the plunge will be held at Fiera di Genova, a large central exhibition center, according to a local news website, Genova24.

Unconfirmed reports say the service is expected to be attended by thousands of mourners, including President Sergio Mattarella. Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, archbishop of Genoa, will preside over the final rites.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Wednesday that Autostrade per l'Italia company managing the Morandi bridge was responsible for its safety and the firm's concession should be revoked.

The Italian government imposed a year-long state of emergency in Liguria and allocated 5 million euros (some $5.7 million) to mitigate the consequences of the incident.

According to previous reports, the bridge that collapsed in the Italian city of Genoa, claiming the lives of at least 38 people was temporarily closed two years ago and needed "extraordinary maintenance work."

According to the head of Genoa's public prosecutor's office, Francesco Cozzi, human error caused the fatal incident. He stated that after the rescue operations, investigators would analyze "all aspects related to the development, engineering and maintenance of the bridge" in order to understand what had happened. Cozzi added that he was ready to open the case "for negligent multiple homicide and disaster".

This statement echoed the words of Deputy prime minister Luigi Di Maio, who had stated that the tragedy "could have been avoided."

Later on Wednesday Italian firefighters warned that another section of the bridge may collapse soon.

Earlier in the day, Italian transport minister Danilo Toninelli announced that the government had begun revoking motorway concessions after the bridge collapse in Genoa, adding that it would also seek to impose "significant fines" on the company Autostrade per l'Italia, Atlantia SpA unit managing that stretch of the highway.

"The top management of Autostrade per l'Italia must resign first of all. And given that there have been serious damages, I announce that we have activated all the procedures for the possible revocation of concessions, and to impose fines of up to 150 million euros. If they cannot manage our motorways, the state will do it," Toninelli said on his Facebook page.

He also stated that the experts would do a safety audit on the aging bridges and tunnels across Italy, adding that the Civil Protection Emergency Fund will be used to restore the road system in Genoa.

Italian PM: No Doubt Contractor Was Responsible For Ensuring Safety of Bridge

The bridge was constructed in the 1960s, and, according to a two-year-old document leaked by the unofficial Wikileaks Italy Twitter account, needed massive repairs.

On Wednesday Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte approved a twelve-month state of emergency requested by the Liguria region. The official also added that the company Autostrade per l'Italia was responsible for ensuring the safety of the collapsed bridge because it was stipulated by the concession agreement to do so.

"The meeting of the Council of Ministers has just ended. Almost all members of the government took part, some over the phone, excluding only those who were absent for personal reasons. I am pleased to announce that we satisfied the request of the president of Liguria and introduced a state of emergency for a year," Conte told reporters.

The prime minister added that five million euros had been allocated from the national emergency fund to conduct primary works to eliminate the damages caused by the incident.

Bridge Collapse in Genoa Caused by Human Error - Chief Prosecutor

According to previous reports, the bridge that collapsed in the Italian city of Genoa, claiming the lives of at least 38 people was temporarily closed two years ago and needed "extraordinary maintenance work."

This is a tragedy indeed. It seems like a lot of the infrastructure in Italy is in need of tlc. I have just returned from spending 3 weeks in Italy- we caught buses, trains and ferries to get around. The ferries (I assume are privately owned) were great, on time and clean. The trains and buses were invariably late, & it seemed to us that the public transport infrastructure really needed an over haul. I don't know much about the politics in Italy, it seems that public funds are not being spent where it should. From what we learned when we were there, a lot of public works are funded by designer companies-The Trevi fountain was cleaned and refurbished by the designer brand Fendi, The Spanish Steps by Bvlgari, and in Venice one of the the oldest bridges spanning the Grand Canal (Ponte dell'Academia) is being repaired by eye-wear brand Luxottica. Let's hope with enough outcry over this horrific incident, something will change for the better.

The bridge collapsed because the tower holding it up collapsed.

Reminds me of the towers on 9/11. Could this also be the space based weapon, to punish Italy for rejecting the migrants foisted upon them?

Hard to say but, per angelburst29 post, they seem to be moving bodies rather quickly, IMHO.

Also a number of people were committed to mental health facilities due to shock. Or could it have been, having witnessed something beyond comprehension, as a possible by-product of WMD!
