It may be worth pointing out that actually the photo shows many of them dressed as Nazis rather than German soldiers.
Disgust as rugby fans dress up as German soldiers
A RUGBY captain has expressed his disgust after fans of a rival team dressed as German soldiers during a tense match less than a week before Remembrance Day.
Ogmore Vale RFC’s Kevin Baldwin said fans and players were appalled after Nantymoel supporters donned soldier uniforms and waved German flags.
A spokesman for Nantymoel RFC dismissed claims the outfits were insensitive so close to remembrance ceremonies. He said some supporters chose to dress like German soldiers as Ogmore Vale fans call them “The Germans”.
Mr Baldwin, 37, of Brackla, Bridgend, said: “Do they realise the hurt and the disrespect that they did on that day was absolutely disgusting? I am sure many of their families were in the war.
“I’m disgusted to be honest.”
The controversial incident happened during a tense game between Nantymoel and Ogmore Vale rugby clubs at Nantymoel Park last Saturday.
About seven Nantymoel supporters dressed in soldier uniforms and held a large German flag.
The dad of three said: “We turned up and they were dressed as German soldiers.
“Most of us had our poppies on.
“Even the Nantymoel fans were disgusted.”
Mr Baldwin said about 600 people attended the derby match.
Nantymoel won the game 33-10 at the finish, but Mr Baldwin denied being a sore loser.
“It’s not sour grapes. They won on the day,” the shop supervisor said.
“My players were absolutely outstanding. They were dignified – nothing was said.”
Alun James, secretary of Nantymoel RFC, furiously denied that the incident caused any offence to most people attending the match.
Explaining the fans’ actions, he said: “It came from the fact that Ogmore Vale calls us the Germans and about half a dozen of our boys put some silly German hats on.
“For the majority of people, it was a good laugh. There was no trouble and it was good banter.”
Mr James also dismissed the claim that dressing up as German soldiers was insensitive so close to Remembrance Day.
“Not in the way it was done, because there was no trouble at all,” he said.
