Surge in sightings - Britain's most poisonous spider - the false widow

There has been a terrifying surge in the number of sightings of Britain's most poisonous spider - the false widow - in London and Essex in the past month. More than 50 people have reported seeing the venomous arachnid, the cousin of the infamous black widow, in the past few weeks alone. Amanda Armitage, 31, told of how her five-year-old daughter had one in her HAND. She said that her husband saw the distinctive "white skull image" on the spider's back and took swift action. Mrs Armitage, from Essex, said: "He had seen the story about the false widow going around Facebook and when he saw what Emily was holding, there was a look of terror on his face and he whacked it out of Emily’s hand." The venomous creatures, which arrived from the Canary Islands 140 years ago, used to only appear in warmer parts of the country like Devon, Dorset and Cornwall. But a succession of mild winters have enabled the exotic arachnid to move across the country.

In 2009 Grandmother Lyn Mitchell, 52, almost died when she was bitten by a false widow as she slept in her home in Egremont, Cumbria. She fell into a coma and was on life support in hospital for 26 hours. The purple and black spiders have an abdomen the size of a 1p piece and generally live in walls, fences and the barks of trees. They eat insects, other invertebrates and even other spiders. But as temperatures drop, many are heading into houses to keep warm. Environmentalist Matt Shardlow, of conservation charity Buglife, said both global warming and natural evolution could be to blame for the spiders’ alarming rate of migration. He said: “The false widow has long been prevalent across much of the south-west because of the milder temperatures. “They come from warm countries and are usually killed off by our cold weather. “But climate change may have helped and the species would have also adapted and evolved to cope with the colder weather.” The false widow is one of 12 spider species known to bite humans in the UK. Their bite usually causes an initial sharp pain which develops into a burning sensation.

One Kent man, Alex Michael, 36, saw his hand "swell like a balloon" after being bitten by the false widow. He initially had blood tests and x-rays at both Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, as experts desperately tried to find out what was wrong. Doctors gave him a course of flucloxacillin and within days, the swelling reduced and the pain disappeared. He said: "If they bite a young kid of an elderly person who hasn’t got a great metabolism it could be quite dangerous." John Tweddle, an insect specialist at the Natural History Museum, said: "False widow spiders tend to bite when accidentally trapped between skin and clothes. "People should be careful when putting on gloves or boots that have been left unused for a while as these spiders may seek refuge and hide in those." One young mum in London said she was terrified to go into her garden after finding a false widow lurking in her rose bush. Carley Willams, 34, thought she'd spotted a black and yellow beetle but soon realised it was a "terrible" looking spider. She added: "I first saw it about three days ago but I've seen its web there for several weeks. "It's horrible. I can't put my baby son George down on the floor." Although a bite from the most deadly of the British species, the noble false widow (Steatoda nobilis), could kill, nobody has ever died from a spider bite in the UK.

Bites reported across London and Kent

More sightings of the false widow spider, as Britain's 'most venomous arachnid', with orange legs and white skull markings spotted in Essex

A man has been bitten in his sleep by Britain’s most poisonous spider as hordes of the arachnid are reported to have invaded parts of London and Kent due to climate change.

Alex Michael, 36, a tattoo artist from Sidcup in London told News Shopper how his hand turned yellow and black after being attacked by a false widow spider, also called steatoda nobilis.

His hand remained swollen “like a balloon” for five weeks until doctors gave him a course of antibiotics.

Dubbed the “British black widow”, the deadly spider, which is about the size of a 50 pence piece, unleashes venom and can kill those who are allergic to it. However, it will only attack if provoked.

Tony Wileman, a conservation ecologist at the London Wildlife Trust, said: "The severity of symptoms of false widow spider bites depends on how much venom has been injected and reports from false widow spider bites have included symptoms like chest pains and a swelling and tingling of the bite area.

"It is recommended that if bitten by a spider thought to be a false widow spider then medical attention (a visit to the A&E department or your local GP) should be sought informing the medical staff that you think you have been bitten by a false widow spider.

So first it was snakes, now it's spiders...
Apparently, there would be dozens of new sightings every day.
Some recent reports of spider bites in the UK are really chilling and in some cases, amputation is necessary.
Britain is becoming a very dangerous country to live in...

Yeah, it sure seems so.

I'm wondering what they're talking about the "succession of mild winters" spreading them to more area (north)? If there's any truth to it, it must have been before the last four or five years, because there have been NO MILD WINTERS, on the contrary the recent winters have been very long, cold, with lots of precipitation (snow and ice) in Britain (and many other places).

Well, one has to keep the 'Global warming' propaganda alive! :D
I guess the people who write that sort of stuff believe that if you repeat it often enough, people will catch on. But people are not stupid: they can see (and feel!) cold weather! People can observe that snow falls earlier in the year, they can also see it on their bills (turning on the central heating earlier in the year is not exactly cheap nowadays) and if they are a bit interested in the subject, they can read it in the news:

So, these global warmists WILL have to stop taking people for fools at some point because it shows. The jig is up, guys!

That's what I wondered too. And had to think also about snakes in this context and these are all the creepy ones (snakes, spiders, next scorpions?) as I'm aware of. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

It would be convenient to know the costums of the spiders. Curiously, in the wikipedia webpage does not mention it _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider_bite#False_black_widows I supposed that animals “knows”/perceive something is off and they are reacting to the weather.

When I used to live at my parent's house, black widow spiders, false widow spiders and every time it rained all kind of spiders appeared -and weird bugs too, being hot/warm weather they are quite common. I used to observed them, I can recognize black widow spiders net because they are not beautiful, some sort of a chaotic net, they stay in dark/cold/fresh corners. So, if those kind of spiders are “coming to light” and you live near those places, it would be preferably not reach corners with your bare hands. Like behind the WC, warehouse stuff etc,. The best way to kill them is stepping on it and burn it, their babies may survive. It is horrible, but it in this case it is you/family, children or the damage from the venom of the snakes/spiders/scorpions.

I think spiders are horrible and I prefer snakes. I never kill a spider but maybe I will change my mind. Black widow are elegant but scary. My god!

But the best thing to take out fears is to read about what you are afraid of. This works for me, so I will read about these spiders, elegant and horrible. Are they really dangerous? Is there The False Widow Spider in Spain?
I found this information about these little creatures:

Thanks for the information angelburst29.

Thanks for bringing this up angelburst29. My brother alerted me on a article that he read and seemed to have felt rather afraid - especially about the part where the article suggested that we may see spiders spreading to the north (where we are). Oh shucks, not only snakes, but venomous spiders are another thing we have to contend with.

Yeah, exactly. But it doesn't seem like these types understand the concept of the jig being up - an inevitable part of any scam.

This is so true. I live in the south east UK and every day I talk to people at work - colleagues and members of the public - who are questioning the global warming scam. And these are ordinary people with no interest in conspiracies, and who still believe in the government. The jig is up but the global warming conspirators won't get it until they are buried under 20 feet of ice!

I wonder if "environmentally speaking" snakes, spider's and other species that live close or in the ground are becoming more visible due to the sudden earth changes in weather and climate? More to the point, disturbing their innate life cycles and instincts and they're becoming "more visual, out in the open and in some cases, aggressive" in their quest for survival? Add to it, the increasing fluxes from hot and cold, flooding, tremors from earthquakes and sinkholes, gravity and magnetic changes, adding sudden shifts to the environmental landscape.

Snakes seem to have survival instincts even after being killed. A copperhead snake, decapitated in this Huntsville, Alabama video, manages to bite its own body after its head has been severed.

Wild pigs terrorize a suburb in Atlanta, Georgia:
http://newsfeed.time.com/2013/09/25/atlanta-suburb-terrorized-by-wild-pigs/

Reuters reports that at least four feral pigs, which can grow up to 400 pounds, are running wild in Lithonia, Georgia, a suburb just 19 miles outside the city.

Lithonia isn’t the first suburb to find itself unexpectedly beset by feral hogs. There have been reports of wild hogs in 45 states, and counties as far North as upstate New York have been forced to deal with the unwanted guests. That’s especially bad news for farmers, as the hogs are one of the most destructive species to the local environment.
