Bus accident and fatalities

Add to this the number of children, who died in the Kemerovo fire in Russia. It seems like there were a lot of chaotic events involving children lately.

Noticed that as well!

Two German tourists died and 12 other people were injured Friday when their minibus fell into a ravine on an Andean road in southern Peru, police said.

The vehicle, which carried 12 German tourists along with their Peruvian driver and another Peruvian, fell about 20 meters (65 feet) while traveling from the city of Arequipa to the town of Chivay around 3:00 pm (2000 GMT).

The surviving 10 German tourists and their two Peruvian crewmembers were taken to hospital in Arequipa, a police official in Chivay said.

Chivay, home to about 6,500 inhabitants, is located more than 3,600 kilometers (2,240 miles) above sea level in the mountains of the Colca Valley, a popular tourist destination in the South American country.

Hours earlier, another accident occurred in the same region that left seven dead and 18 injured, after a passenger bus fell into a 60-meter (yards) ravine.

A separate bus plunge on Friday, in the northern region of La Libertad, killed at least 11 people when it landed at the bottom of a 200-meter chasm, police said.

Peruvian authorities recommend driving with extreme caution in the winding and narrow Andean routes.

On January 2, 52 people died, while 45 were killed on February 21 -- in both cases after passenger buses fell into ravines of nearly 100 meters.

Almost 2,700 people died in traffic accidents in Peru in 2016, according to official figures. The data for 2017 have not yet been published.

Chinese FM confirms ‘many casualties’ in North Korea tourist bus crash
4-23-18
A major traffic accident in North Korea has resulted in numerous casualties, among them Chinese tourists, the country’s foreign ministry has confirmed.

"The Chinese Embassy in North Korea was informed by the DPRK that a serious traffic accident occurred on North Korea's Huanghai Road at night, causing heavy casualties to Chinese tourists," the foreign ministry said, adding that "relevant details are currently being verified."

The ministry has not yet disclosed the number of dead and injured, but noted that Chinese diplomats immediately rushed to the scene of the accident. The ministry says it immediately initiated an “emergency mechanism” and has been “sparing no effort” in attending to the situation.

Full details of the incident have yet to be officially disclosed. Earlier, however, the Chinese state news agency CGTN had posted a tweet reporting that a tour bus had fallen off a bridge, killing 30 people. The tweet was then deleted. Meanwhile, travel industry sources also allegedly confirmed to NK News on Monday that more than 30 people have died in a tour bus crash in North Korea.

The tragedy reportedly involved a group of Chinese travel company staff from Beijing, who were returning to Pyongyang from the southern city of Kaesong.

The segment of the road where the accident is believed to have occurred is currently undergoing a major renovation project, ahead of Friday’s summit between Korean leaders Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in, multiple sources told NK News. In addition, weather conditions could have contributed to the tragedy, with heavy rain and wind reported on the Korean peninsula on Sunday.

North Korea attracts a significant number of Chinese tourists from its fellow communist neighbor, worth about $44 million in additional annual revenue to Pyongyang. About 80 percent of all North Korea's foreign tourists are Chinese, the Korea Maritime Institute estimates. According to Beijing, more than 237,000 Chinese visited the country in 2012.

School bus crashes into power line in Watsonville
All 34 students on board OK-Video Apr 23, 2018 09:31 AM PDT
WATSONVILLE, Calif. - A Monte Vista Christian school bus carrying 34 students swerved off the road, struck a tree and power pole in Watsonville.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the accident on Casserly Road at Wheellock Road around 7:50 a.m. Monday. Live wires were scattered all over the street.

Before CHP arrived students were able to get off the bus without any injuries.

Officer Sam Courtney told KION they've received reports that a man driving a white car veered into the lane of oncoming traffic and the bus swerved out of the way to avoid getting hit. When asked about evacuating the children with live power lines nearby, he added,

"Definitely dangerous getting out of a bus with live power lines nearby. The bus could have been energized...if it had made any contact, just simply touching the ground would have been enough. So very fortunate that no one was hurt getting out of that bus."

The driver of the white car did not stop and was last seen going eastbound.

Cal Fire said all children boarded another bus and were taken to school.

Casserly will remain closed until the road can be reopened.

Fuel tanker hits power lines: Sparks fly in dramatic crash (VIDEO)

US police have released footage of the moment a truck laden with 12,000 gallons (45,000 liters) of fuel smashed into power lines, causing sparks to fly.

The driver has blamed the collision on a freak bird encounter.

The bizarre incident, which investigators at the Bourne Police Department in Massachusetts say could have been far worse, occurred along a stretch of road between Lewisville and Carrollton.

Footage released Tuesday shows how the 10-wheeler lorry, carrying thousands of gallons of flammable fuel, suddenly drifted off a busy road and into an electrical power pole.

The impact caused the power lines to shed sparks which almost reigned down on the vehicle. According to local law enforcement, the driver of the vehicle said he lost control after a bird flew into the cab and struck him on the head

However, investigators have been unable to verify the claim and the man has been charged with dangerous driving.

“After viewing this very high quality dash cam taken by another motorist, officers were unable to confirm the operator’s account of the accident, observing the vehicle did not swerve and instead slowly travelled across multiple lanes without breaking,” a police statement read.

“The operator was cited for failure to stay within marked lanes and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.”

At least 1 dead, several injured in NJ school bus crash
Updated: May 17, 2018 6:17 PM RDT
NBC New York)
At least one person is dead after a full-size school bus with middle school students aboard collided with a dump truck on a major New Jersey highway Thursday, a violent accident that ripped the undercarriage completely off the bus and left it demolished on its side in the median, two sources tell News 4.

An unknown number of children were on board the school bus at the time of the 10:20 a.m. crash on Route 80 near exit 25 in Mount Olive Township, according to the New Jersey State Police. Many injuries have been reported.

An official tells News 4 the bus came from East Brook Middle School in Paramus, a public school serving roughly 650 students in grades 5-8. The principal's office hung up the phone when News 4 called seeking comment. The school's calendar shows a scheduled fifth-grade class trip to Waterloo Village in Stanhope.

No additional details on the children or the nature of the injuries were available. Morristown Medical Center confirmed it was receiving patients but a spokesperson did not know how many were expected to arrive at the hospital.

Photos obtained by News 4 shows

The front of it is barely recognizable, a mangled chunk of broken-apart machinery spread from the highway shoulder lane through the guardrail and into the grassy median, where police and first responders are seen tending to stunned children. The undercarriage, the bus wheels still attached, lays perpendicular to the overturned bus, stretching out over multiple lanes of the highway.

The side of the bus says Paramus Board of Education, according to Mount Olive Township Mayor Rob Greenbaum. The Paramus transportation office declined to share information with News 4, calling the situation "upsetting." The school district's office said the superintendent is working on a statement.

Gov. Murphy has also been briefed on the situation, and the National Transportation Safety Board says it is gathering information on the crash.

Route 80 is closed in both directions in the area, with westbound traffic diverted at exit 26. Expect heavy traffic and delays on Route 46, Mount Olive police say.

The fire occurred around 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Holmdel, New Jersey. The driver pulled onto the shoulder when he noticed smoke coming from the bus, and the more than 20 passengers aboard got out safely.

The fire destroyed the bus. It also forced the brief closure of the local southbound lanes, but the highway’s express lanes remained open.

State police say the bus was registered to Island Charter of Staten Island, New York. But it wasn’t immediately known where the bus was headed to when the fire occurred.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

COVINGTON, LA (WVUE)
A multiple-vehicle crash, that closed one side of Interstate 12 in Covington, has left four people dead and others injured. The crash, which involved two 18-wheelers and multiple vehicles, occurred Saturday afternoon on I-12 at Highway 21.

The crash happened at approximately 4 p.m. on I-12 near LA 21.

Investigators say traffic was stopped or slowing to a stop on I-12 due to congestion when an 18-wheeler traveling in the right lane was unable to stop for unknown reasons. The 18-wheeler started a chain reaction crash with nine other vehicles.

During the crash, the 18-wheeler jackknifed and caught fire along with three other vehicles.

The driver of the 18-wheeler died at the scene. The driver’s identity has not been confirmed.

A 2014 Lexus IS350 was struck by the 18-wheeler during the crash. The driver and passenger in the vehicle, Yoland Simmons and Keland Simmons of Baton Rouge, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of a 1997 Toyota 4Runner that was also struck by the 18-wheeler, Rachel Lehmann of Mandeville, was taken to a local hospital where she later died.

State Police say several other individuals were taken to area hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to moderate. All are expected to make a full recovery.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office confirmed that one of the injured in the crash is a St. Tammany deputy.

"My heart goes out to the families that have been impacted by this tragedy, and we will work diligently to positively identify the victims and notify the families in a timely manner," St. Tammany Parish Coroner Dr. Charles Preston said. "I am praying for the safety of all travelers on this Memorial Day weekend and encourage extra caution on our congested roadways."

Impairment has not yet been determined to be a factor in the crash. Toxicology tests are pending.

Closure in Mexico-Cuernavaca by accident affected thousands of people

ORLANDO, Fla. - Fifteen Disney guests were taken to the hospital Tuesday after a bus crash in the Epcot auto plaza, the Reedy Creek Fire Department said.
The Florida Highway Patrol said there were 51 people total on the buses at the time of the crash, which happened at about 10 a.m.

A Disney spokesperson told Channel 9's Lauren Seabrook that there is nothing more important than the safety of guests and cast members, and that they are currently focused on the well-being of those involved.

FHP said Jacob Buettner, 21, was driving the bus when he crased into the bus in front of him.

Troopers said Buettner did not slow down for the bus, which was stopped at the Epcot toll booth.
The 15 patients suffered minor injuries, FHP said.

Troopers said those that were hurt were in the front rows of the bus.

“Any sort of impact while standing up would probably cause some injury,” said visitor Derek Hendrix.

Hendrix and said several people were standing on the bus he took and wonders if that’s what caused so many injuries.
“You probably would fall forward,” said visitor Megean Demos.

Nine ambulances were used to take patients to the hospital.
