There is also the perennial question of why people so desperately want relief from reality...

Quite simple, the reality ain't all that nice for most people.

It is not about relief from reality, but no one can explain it better than Carl Sagan!

Hi kanguru007,
This forum has clear stand on the use of illegal substances. Please refrain from posting links which encourage such activities.

I don’t think Carl Sagan has the whole banana on a lot of things. Esoterically speaking, the use of ‘substances’ to achieve certain states isn’t really promoted because it’s the easy way out and can actually cause damage. It is said that those states can be attained by working on oneself but it takes time and effort. This is reminiscent again of ‘If you expect a free lunch, then you are lunch.’

Another example of how Carl has kind of missed the boat:

Advances in medicine and agriculture have saved vastly more lives than have been lost in all the wars in history.
Carl Sagan - The Demon-Haunted World (1995)

The above is rather simplistic and doesn’t take into account how in a ponerized society medicine, agriculture and war have all been used to dupe, control and keep us weak to prevent us from fulfilling our potential, and also how they have been manipulated to keep power and money in the hands of the psychopathic elite. Though I guess what you do with it depends on what kind of ‘life’ you’re aiming for.

Carl Sagan is mentioned quite a bit here if you do a forum search on his name.

I tried weed and the only benefit I found was some kind of similar effect to the three stage breathing, apart of that, apathy to everything else, lot of time wasted with it, lost of memories (trust me, after doing this drug by some time you'll forget some things forever unless you try some special method I guess), and also ;D a trip to the most horrifying psychosis I ever had like the last time I did years ago.

When I was 16 I read a book that gave the creeps, it was the diary of a young girl that took hard drugs, I think the title was something like "le journal bleu" (the blue diary) or something like that. So I never touched hard core, never, ever. Young I took some grass and me too felt horrible! bad trips, paranoia, depression... I am against drugs, the official drugs like medicine drugs as the others ones. I can not understand someone who takes drugs nor someone who needs alcohol. I can understand their unhappiness, although.

My brief encounter with cannabis is decades behind me now. It was the late 60s, I guess I was effected by the atmosphere of times.

I found the grass, while enjoyable, left me with a profound apathy. There was a point in that period when I using grass where I became aware of something was wrong. It took about a week to isolate what it was. I realized that I didn't care about anything. I didn't care if I had a job, whether the rent got paid, having enough income to meet my needs. I didn't care about my future, health, learning about life in general. I had always be a curious person, that had faded to near nothing.

Several weeks later I gave away my "stash" and never looked back.

Bringing grass into the mix led to the destruction of a group of close friendships. Before that got started we used to enjoy fishing, camping, watched football games. In our own crude way, we discussed philosophy, religion and the state of the world. Once grass got started it this all went away.. It took over everything, became our only way of relating.

Cannabis might well have specific, medicinal value, But it is too easy to let it take over ones life, to be a substitute for the urgent, extremely important Work that we need to be doing.

Just my 2 cents

Mac

I think using drugs is more like a need to escape reality and find relief from it.
weed is not a soft drug IMO (who decides what is soft and hard anyway ?)
I've had also a lot of bad experience with it and from all the drugs I used weed is definitely one of the most
psychoactive drugs (at least for me) and for sensitive people like me it can have destructive consequences.

also when you are using drugs you are in a state of hysteria all the time and one of the most important things in your mind is where to get more of it.

I agree when I used weed it made me very lazy and I didn't care about anything exept to take more of it.
I guess it makes people more Psychopathic.

Yes, there are many "bad" issues with cannabis.

There are medicinal purposes. I have seen my buddy die a horrible death from cancer and this plant helped his pain and negate the sickening poisonous affects of chemotherapy. For example, he retained his hair and appetite.

And there are industrial applications that are so numerous that they could be discussed on a thread of it's own.

edit: clarification

Cannabis has been proven to act as a trigger for mental disorders in people who have genetic predisposition, enough to stay away from the stuff especially if you have cases of mental illness in your family tree

People keep talking about cannabis in this thread but we can't have Carl Sagan's opinion on it?!

Hi kanguru0007, the forum guidelines are not up to you. Please re-read them in their entirety. If you disagree with them you are more than welcome to visit another forum where you can talk about whatever it is you would like to talk about.

Sagan's (scientific materialist) opinion is irrelevant. Besides the legal issue concerning forum security, the shooting oneself in the foot by experiencing 'highs' before ones body-mind naturally has excelled to that point, is a pivotal point that cannabis praise is not welcome. Besides it most probably leaves the unwitting mind's psychic defenses open for all sorts of hyperdimensional tampering.

What? Makes people more psychopathic? That might be you're personal, subjective experience but you obviously have not been around people suffering from painful inflictions(cancer, for example) who use it on a regular basis to ease their pain.

Many, from my personal experience, are interested in all things natural and chose an organic plant as a medicine over big-pharma's drugs. The most important thing on their minds likely had little to do with how to score more.

(And that's not even mentioning the economics......where does the money go? An organic gardener or Bayer?)
