Reviewing Beyond Disclosure by Harrison Koehli in our reading workshop reminded me of the numerous stories I’ve heard growing up in Pennsylvania. Most of the information is from Supernatural Lore of Pennsylvania by Thomas White,
Ghost stories are a memory of something real that had an impact on people and their community. They may also be repeated as a reminder of danger.
The ghost of Barbara Davidson, born in 1777 South Carolina, has haunted the area around Cannelton Rd, near Little Beaver Rd, Beaver County. Barbara’s family relocated to Pennsylvania after they lost their land to the British. In 1795, her parents and the rest of the family went to Pittsburgh to purchase livestock and poultry. When they returned, Barbara was nowhere to be found. After the community helped the family search for their daughter, they made a horrific discovery. Barbara’s headless body was found jammed into the crawlspace under their house. They never found her killer. Barbara’s headless ghost wanders the old family property, seeking vengeance on her killer.
Betty Knox of Dunbar, PA Fayette County was born in 1842 on a farm in Kentuck Knob. She was an only child and lost her mother to consumption at 3. When she was 17 she lost her father. She supplemented her income hauling grain to the gristmill in Ferguson Hollow.
One trip she met a wounded soldier and took him home to nurse him back to health. He never recovered from his injuries. Betty returned to her daily trip over the mountain. Sometime in 1878 the trips came to an end. The neighbors searched for her but never from her. It is reported that her pale specter wanders the old trail, sometimes on foot or on her ghostly wagon.
The White Lady, Wopsononck Mountain in Central PA dares from around the late 1800s and involves a couple who were involved in a deadly accident on a narrow mountain road. Several versions of this story exist. In one version the couple were eloping and the bride's father was chasing them. Numerous witnesses claim to have seen the apparition of the distraught women wandering near the bend looking for something. There are similar stories in at least six other counties.
