cat urine issue

The vet was talking about making it so that the male cat actually urinated like a female - getting rid of the penis, I guess.
That is now considered outdated and pretty gruesome solution, it boils down to shortening of urethra. Don't know of anyone who still recommends it.

Yes, I agree, it is gruesome. And, well, it was back in the 1990s. Thanks again.

we have george home since yesterday he has crystals but is doing well, thankfully its not serious he went the toilet today no problems clear of blood we will keep
him in for a few days to make sure everything is ok the vet gave us stuff called Metacam to add to his food, they said if it persists a special diet will be
needed dont think that will be necessary as long as we can keep him on his normal diet and away from kibbles he should be fine, will add vit c in small doses to his food over the next few days just to be sure, thanks for the advice everyone much appreciated

Glad to hear George is OK and back at home, which always reduces stress. We too have a cat prone to crystals and he also has cat AIDS. He was on the Hills c/d special diet for a time, but is doing well on a raw diet now. If you haven't already done so, check out the link http://www.catinfo.org/ that Z provided. This is the raw food recipe that we use (with a little extra water added) and it provides a well balanced diet that includes additional supplemented taurine, which is essential for cats. Also has a lot of info on UTI and other cat problems. Sounds like you have a good handle on the diet though. Our furry mate has only had one recurrence of crystals since his first problem, believed to be caused by dehydration in very hot weather and external stress (one of the other cats picks on him, keeping him away from the house sometimes). If he ever displays any trouble urinating again, as last time, we'll get him to the vet ASAP.

Best of luck and a speedy recovery.
