SHEPHERD, Texas - An employee was injured in an explosion at a chemical plant in Shepherd that prompted a shelter-in-place for nearby residents.

The explosion occurred at Sound Resource Solutions at 731 FM 1127 around 8:17 a.m. Wednesday.

A massive plume of smoke billowed over the area for hours, but it had mostly been knocked down by 1:15 p.m. Firefighters are still on the scene, as of 1:45 p.m., spraying foam over the area.

What is burning in the Shepherd plant fire?

San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers says he was advised by the president of Sound Resource Solutions that diesel was burning, and some turpentine and other chemicals may be burning as well.

According to Polk County OEM, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality records show that the plant has reported housing wood turpentine, phosphoric acid, xylene, diesel fuel, IMP-IC-2012, sulfuric acid, CDA-121, NP 9, isopropyl alcohol, IMB-BAC-2, AZA-121 dispersant and acetic acid.

Seems like a small facility, San Jacinto county is very rural.

I think this is the right thread to post. We were very fortunate yesterday as had a grass-fire that started less than 1km away from our home and was threatning to engulf the entire suburb. It was actually spreading and coming right in our direction due to the wind. The emergency services were at the scene most of the afternoon and the in/out road was blocked. The police was preventing anyone from coming or leaving the suburb. The power also went out for about 6 hours and we had to light candlesticks. Thankfully water and gas were on and that helped a lot.

There was black smoke in the air and a few embers and ashes. Some of the smoke came inside the house too, making it a little uncomfortable to breath and if not for the gale-force winds bringing the smoke but also taking it away, we could have had a real situation at hand. Some people already were trying to leave with their belongings without success and I could sense real panic in the air.

This was in the news too.

A pipeline fire in La Porte, TX (east of Houston) - a pipeline caught fire this morning and is still burning. Nearby residents told to shelter in place:

LA PORTE, Texas — Crews are battling a raging fire at a pipeline in the Deer Park area, according to the Office of Emergency Management. According to the City of La Porte, the large fire is burning near the Brookglen neighborhood at Spencer Highway near East Boulevard. This is also near a Walmart and H-E-B.The fire department is recommending an evacuation between Luella and Canada in the Brookglen neighborhood, the La Porte OEM said.
Flames from the pipeline fire ignited a grass fire but firefighters appear to have it under control. They are spraying nearby homes to try and protect them.
"There are about 350 homes that are very near the fire point and so there's an evacuation order in place," Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia said.

So far, Brookglen is the only neighborhood advised to evacuate because winds are calm and that's keeping the smoke from spreading.

"The smoke is just going straight up into the air, so from a weather perspective, there's no wind and there's also no inversion," KHOU 11 meteorologist Pat Cavlin explained. "Because the smoke is allowed to go straight up into the atmosphere and not hug the ground, this is not an immediate concern for surrounding neighborhoods, just the immediate area."

Harris County pollution control is also monitoring the air quality.

San Jacinto College and nearby schools in La Porte ISD and Deer Park ISD are sheltering in place. La Porte ISD said all students are safe.

Garcia said no injuries have been reported.

Some power poles have also caught fire and thousands of customers are without power. CenterPoint says over 4,000 customers are impacted. Emergency responders are helping an assisted living community that doesn't have power to keep them safe and evacuate if necessary, according to Garcia.

Before firefighters can tackle the pipeline fire, they have to determine which pipeline it is so the fuel can be shut off because there are several pipelines in the area. No word yet on what is burning from the pipeline.

Hazmat teams are also heading to the area.

Spencer Highway is closed in both directions and so are nearby roads. Everyone should avoid the area.

According to KHOU 11 Meteorologist Pat Cavlin, winds are light so the flames are just straight up in the sky along with the smoke. This should help contain the flames.[...]

An update on the LaPorte pipeline fire - apparently started when a car ran over a valve; the car crashed through a fence.

In the release, officials said a white SUV drove through a fence on the west side of Walmart's parking lot and entered the pipeline right-of-way. They said the vehicle hit an above-ground valve. Officials with Dallas-based Energy Transfer, which owns the pipeline, said they turned off the flow to the ruptured line and were waiting for the remnants to burn off.

Authorities said an investigation will begin once the fire is out and they can get closer to the scene. City officials said a preliminary investigation suggested no terroristic activity connected to the crash. They said it appeared to be an isolated incident and they were working to identify the driver and the vehicle. They also said part of the investigation was to identify the driver and the vehicle.

CONYERS, Ga. (WANF/Gray News) - A fire at a chemical facility in Georgia prompted orders for many nearby residents to evacuate and others to shelter in place.

Around 5 a.m., a sprinkler at a BioLab plant in Conyers, Georgia, malfunctioned and sprayed water on a chemical, causing a reaction that created a large, hazardous plume, which then began drifting to the northeast, according to Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel.

The malfunction also caused a small fire on the BioLab roof, which was contained, McDaniel said.

The fire later reignited in the afternoon causing a huge plume of smoke to billow from the plant. That fire prompted an evacuation order for anyone between I-20 and Sigman Road, according to Rockdale County officials.

Officials said I-20 is blocked off in both directions between Salem Road and Turner Hill Road. The Georgia State Patrol was called in to help with traffic control.

Rockdale County officials requested assistance from other agencies, many of which are now deployed across the state of Georgia responding to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

The Georgia Department of Transportation also reported a “major hazardous materials fire” on Dogwood Drive at Blacklawn Road, near the BioLab location Sunday afternoon.

Evacuation sites were set up in the nearby city of Covington, Georgia, after the original evacuation site was also evacuated.

The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency has issued a shelter-in-place order on behalf of the Rockdale County Emergency Management Agency for residents in the north half of Rockdale County, above Sigman Road. Those residents should remain indoors with the windows and doors closed, and should turn off their air conditioners.

County officials said Sunday afternoon that those who don’t leave the evacuation zone need to shelter in place. Officials said anyone south of I-20 should be safe.

The county also called on all churches to cancel services today, for churches already in session to disperse immediately, and for attendees to not travel through the affected areas.

The fire at the plant reignited as officials were working to remove the water-reactive chemical from BioLab to stop any further reaction, which McDaniel said requires heavy equipment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting air monitoring to determine what the chemical is.

County officials said employees were at the facility at the time of the early morning incident, but no injuries have been reported.

Officials said there’s currently no timeframe on ending the shelter-in-place order. Officials do not currently have an estimate on the number of people evacuated.

BioLab is described on its website as a “swimming pool and spa water care division of KIK Consumer Products, based in Lawrenceville, Georgia.”

“We are actively investigating an incident at our BioLab facility in Conyers, Georgia. Our employees are accounted for with no injuries reported. Our team is on the scene, working with first responders and local authorities to assess and contain the situation. As always, the safety of our community remains our top priority,” KIK Consumer Products said in a statement to WANF.

A fire broke out at the same location in 2004, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

A similar incident reportedly happened at the facility in 2020. According to the U.S. Chemical Safety Board, the “thermal decomposition” of a product containing chlorine happened there on Sept. 14, 2020.

On going. There are an infinite number of types of boxes, it is curious that they do not specify or describe what type of box it is.

Knoxville Fire: Evacuation urged after ‘possible explosives’ found near Western Avenue
Mayor Indya Kincannon shared that CMC Recycling reported that they found a box possibly containing explosives. She said the main goal is to evacuate the area.

“As the mayor indicated, the initial call was from CMC Recycling. The employees reported [that they] found a box that possibly contained explosives. When they went to open that box in their normal procedures, they discovered it potentially had explosives and then they notified us,” said KPD spokesperson Scott Erland.

“We have since verified that we also believe that this contains potential explosives. The problem that we have right now is the box is smoking. So, for the bomb squad, we’re kind of in a wait-and-see mode because anything the bomb squad does has the potential to upset that box. So, the main priority right now is the evacuations and those efforts are ongoing with KPD, KFD and THP.”

The bomb squad is currently monitoring the situation as they do not wish to aggravate the situation until the area is evacuated. Erland said this could be a prolonged event.

Both said they believe the box’s contents were improperly disposed of and not placed maliciously.

This is all that remains of the gas station in Grozny where a gas tank exploded .
As a result of the emergency, four people died, including two children. Five were injured. The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case.

Gas stations are supposed to be super safe and that is why they are attached (almost) to the houses/buildings. I would not rule out an act of terrorism, though.
