Warhawks want a new cold war because it justifies and increases the budget of the military-industrial complex. Mainly, that's all there is to it. Russia has no intention of invading and even if they were they would not have 100K troops stationed along the border but a million.

So the big day has arrived!
According to Washington and London, today is the day in which the mighty Russian army was to invade poor Ukraine with hundreds of thousands of troops - tanks smashing through homes, and thousands of missiles raining down.
What actually happened is that Russian troops concluded military exercises in Belarus and southwestern Russia and are returning to their barracks.
There is one potentially significant development, however. The Russian Duma has drafted a bill that would see Russia formally recognize the independence from Ukraine of the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk (presumably just the portions of those oblasts/republics that Kiev does not occupy).
When asked about this today, Putin's spokesman said "Let's not get ahead of ourselves." If passed by the Duma, it then goes to Putin for signing. What will it means if he does it? It would de jure end the Minsk Accords, which Kiev has de facto been ignoring for the last seven years. Formally under the shield of Russian military protection, Donetsk and Luhansk would now be beyond reach of Kiev... unless UKRAINE invades Russia!
It would be a darkly humorous, justified, and diplomatically/tactically brilliant conclusion to this Western media-generated farce of a 'World War Between the US and Russia'.
However, my sense for now is that this is more 'brinkmanship' by Russia to force changes of political-military direction within Ukraine without resorting to actually firing any shots. There have already been noises from Ukrainian diplomats about Ukraine 'not joining NATO for 10 years', and Lavrov is apparently happy to see that Washington and London are amenable to reinstituting arms control treaties for Europe.
The whole episode underscores an important change in the international balance of power: The West still has the power to make the world believe in mirages of 'nuclear holocaust', but Russia has the actual 'force-multiplying' power to make the West make concessions in its favor.
