Crazy Storm Weather and Lightning - Global

A lighting bolt hit a garage door in an instant as my stepfather walked through it. I saw it because I was in the garage and felt a surge of vibration and blinding light at the same time. It was so powerful that the top of the door frame was destroyed. WOW!! I have never seen anything that powerful coming from the sky. These accounts of lightening strikes that have killed so many humans and animals around the world in the last decade brings this memory up for me In a very vivid way whenever I read about them on SOTT.

Louisiana under state of emergency as severe weather moves in: 'We all need to take this very, very seriously'

July 10, 2019 - States of emergency were declared in New Orleans and Louisiana overall on Wednesday as a hurricane watch threatens the state's southern coast.

The tropical moisture, which already triggered heavy rain and flash flood warnings in New Orleans Wednesday, is expected to intensify into a tropical depression by Thursday morning as the storm moves in from the Gulf of Mexico.

The storm is then forecast to develop into Tropical Storm Barry by Thursday afternoon.

It may even strengthen to a category 1 hurricane by the weekend.

"This is going to be a Louisiana event with coastal flooding and widespread, heavy rainfall potentially impacting every part of the state," Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said in a statement. "No one should take this storm lightly. As we know all too well in Louisiana, low intensity does not necessarily mean low impact."

"Now is the time to check your emergency supplies and get a game-plan for your family and pets," Edwards said.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell added, "New Orleans may experience more widespread localized severe flooding and gale force winds that could result in the endangerment and threat of life, injury and possible property damage."

The system is expected to make landfall in western Louisiana on Saturday, with the worst of the conditions hitting Friday night through Sunday morning.

Tornadoes are possible when the storm reaches Louisiana.

Regardless of how intense the storm may become, heavy rain is expected from the Florida Panhandle to the upper Texas coast and is forecast to extend inland into Louisiana, eastern Texas and the the lower Mississippi Valley.

Edwards warned that Louisiana could see as much as 10 to 15 inches of rain over a 24-hour period.

Six foreign nationals killed as severe weather hits Greece
ATHENS - July 10, 2019 - Six foreign nationals, including two children, were killed and more than 100 other people injured after gale-force winds, rain and hailstorms struck northern Greece late on Wednesday, uprooting trees and collapsing roofs, authorities said.

Television footage showed strong winds sweeping through a restaurant in the Halkidiki peninsula, a region popular with tourists in the summer.

Streets in towns in the area were dotted with uprooted pine trees and overturned motorcycles, photographs posted on websites showed.

“It is the first time in my 25-year career that I have lived through something like this,” Athansios Kaltsas, director of the Nea Moudania Medical Centre, where many of the injured were treated for fractures, told Greek television.

“It was so abrupt, and so sudden,” he said.

Kaltsas said patients taken to the clinic ranged in age from 8 months to over 70. Some suffered head injuries from trees and other falling objects.

Two elderly Czech tourists were killed when strong winds and water swept away their travel trailer, police said. Elsewhere in the region, a woman and an 8-year-old boy, both Romanian nationals, were killed after a roof collapsed on a restaurant in Nea Plagia. A man and a young boy, both Russians, died after a tree collapsed near their hotel in the seaside town of Potidea, authorities said.

Such severe weather is unusual in Greece, where summers are typically hot and dry. Meteorologist Klearxos Marousakis described conditions as “extremely unusual” for this time of year.

Meteorologists forecast it would continue to rain in the area until about 9 a.m. on Thursday.

Authorities declared Halkidiki in a state of emergency, and Greece’s newly appointed citizens’ protection minister was due to visit early on Thursday. At least 140 firefighters were operating in the area.

NEA PLAGIA, Greece July 11, 2019 - At least seven people, including six tourists, were killed and more than 100 others injured when a violent, short-lived storm lashed northern Greece overnight, felling trees and ripping off rooftops.

Witnesses said the storm had come and gone in a matter of minutes. Winds of over 100 kph (60 mph) were reported on the Halkidiki peninsula, popular with tourists in the summer.

The storm was a "supercell", Theodoros Karakostas, a professor of meteorology and climatology at Aristotelion University, told the state Athens News Agency. “It’s a rare phenomenon,” he said.

Supercells are the least common kind of thunderstorm, but the most violent.

More than 560,000 still without power after severe weather strikes Michigan, Wisconsin

July 21, 2019 - While the threat for severe weather has passed, more than 560,000 people have yet to get electricity restored across Michigan and Wisconsin.

Power outages mounted across the mid-western United States as rounds of severe weather blasted the region late Friday through Saturday.

A line of severe thunderstorms produced a continuous path of wind damage and gusts over 60 mph from South Dakota and eastward along the border of Iowa and Minnesota from the early morning to the midday hours of Saturday.

That meets the definition of a derecho," stated AccWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski. "The derecho and other severe thunderstorms erupting over the Midwest on Saturday were fueled by the sweltering heat and humidity surging over a large part of the nation."
Hurricane force wind gusts of 75 mph were reported at both Brookings, South Dakota and Windom, Minnesota. The strong winds downed trees.

"Damaging thunderstorms were not just confined to the derecho on Saturday," Pydynowski said. "Another cluster of severe weather led to funnel clouds being seen southwest of Green Bay, Wisconsin, as heavy rain repeated over the same areas in northwestern Michigan. There have been radar rainfall estimates of a foot in that region."

On Saturday morning, fast-moving floodwaters washed away a bridge that acted as the only access to about 30 houses in Kinsman, Ohio, according to WKBN.

Video taken by the Kinsman Police Department shows live power lines in lying in the rushing water that runs through the area where the bridge once was, possibly downed by strong winds from the earlier storm. Radar indicates there was rainfall of 4 to 7 inches in northern Trumbull County early Saturday morning.

According to WKBN, the dam at Kinsman Lake overtopped, the water sloshing over the edge as the rain inundated the area. Kinsman Trustee Greg Leonhard told the news station that there are about 30 houses near the lake that are accessible only by the bridge.
Water rescues were being performed Saturday afternoon as flooding persisted.

Clearwater, Fla. — A lightning strike Sunday at a Florida beach injured eight people, Clearwater Police Department Lt. Michael Ogliaruso said.

One man in his 40s was directly hit by the strike, fire rescue officials told CNN affiliate WFTS-TVThe man went into cardiac arrest and is in critical condition, WFTS reported.

Three employees of a jet ski rental company and two foreign tourists were among the injured, though the extent of their injuries was unclear, Ogliaruso said.

Four people, including the man struck by lightning, were taken to the hospital, Ogliaruso said

Three of those taken to the hospital had non-life threatening injuries. The three others involved declined treatment.

It's not uncommon for people to stay on the beach and watch the storms, Ogliaruso said.

"It was one of those bad Florida storms. It came and now it's gone sunny and clear out," Ogliaruso said. "As dangerous as they are, they're also pretty spectacular."

Clearwater Fire and Rescue told WFTS that beachgoers should take cover and go to a safe place when lightning and thunder storms are in the vicinity.

"Clearwater Fire and Rescue uses the phrase: When you hear the roar, go indoors," the fire department said.

Beautiful! I love thunderstorms. They don't frighten me at all; more like invigorating. I usually sit on my front porch with coffee and watch the show. The past couple of years we have had few significant ones to speak of where I live. They seem to skirt around me.

With less than 30 kilometers to go in a thrilling stage of the Tour de France, organizers were forced to cancel the rest of the 19th stage of racing due to heavy hail accumulations -- or, as one racing team put it, "crazy weather conditions." The rare stoppage was a blow to fans of the event but the decision was made for the safety of the riders.

The cyclists were pushing through the French Alps in Friday’s 19th stage when a hailstorm battered the mountain region. There are two days of racing left in the 2019 edition of the Tour, with the athletes set to close out the final stage on Sunday, July 28, in Paris Champs-Élysées.

"The day's course has been called due to adverse weather conditions," Tour de France officials announced. Results for Friday’s stage will be based on the times that the riders passed over the Col de l’lseran, officials said.
