I'm going to write it a second time but handwritten. I also want to make it more personal and more attractive by adding some funny cartoon myself. It increases the chance of being noticed.

FWIW, I would wait to see if you receive a positive (or not) answer to your email first.
If he is busy let him the time to get back to you.

Well, you can always send him a short email explaining your intentions: _http://www.clowncrack.com/contact/

Who knows? He might be the type to endorse the subversive use of his own material. Or not. :halo:

This is the letter I just wrote:

RE "more than art"

Dear Mr. Fish

My name is ... I am an illustrator from Germany. I'm sure you are getting many mails from admires or even critics, since your artworks are expressive not only in terms of artistry but in terms of truthfulness as well. “Truth” is a currency that seems to have lost value in modern times, but it hasn't lost power. It's something that scares the overlords and frees the peasants, if only for an instant. It frees them, when they laugh about the absurdity of global leadership, the insanity of the greedy, the ill-minded and self-aggrandizing bulls running the china shop. It makes them feel a little more sane in an insane world. Your cartoons support their growing impression that their leaders don't live up to their expectations, or even that they don't at all have their best interests at heart. It's a common feeling they all share. It unites the many, while the few are starting to sweat beneath their masks, which are slipping out of position little by little.

Since I am an illustrator myself I really appreciate your work. I'm also seeking ways to communicate truthful aspects of life in my own way. I don't want to just masturbate in terms of style and virtuosity. Like you I want to get to the bottom of things.

There is a very promising none-profit-news-site on the web, dedicated to free and unbiased journalism: "The Signs Of The Times" http://www.sott.net/ It's another attempt to promote the truth. You know that things are heating up on our big blue marble. Everything is messed up to such an extend that I don't know where to begin. Since the few aren't willing to do something about it, the many must take matters into their own hands. Let's join forces! There is no telling how much time we have left. I attached a few flier to the mail, showing how this could take shape. With your permission, I'd like to promote SOTT while featuring your cartoons at the same time. What do you think?

With kind regards,

...

Just a note that it is not clear if you are speaking on behalf of just yourself or of SOTT. The way it is written it could be interpreted that you are from SOTT and are looking to promote the website using his work. Particularly when you say 'Let's join forces'. I think it may be good to send a follow up to clarify the situation, and perhaps network here about it first.

Hello Shane :)

At this point it's a personal request, since I added my professional data to the mail. So it's between illustrator colleagues, from which one feels an urge to act in the way described. It's a suggestion how this may take shape, hoping that he feels the same way about it. SOTT is only mentioned in the text I posted here. "Let's join forces" is ment in a network-kind of sense, seeking ways to multiply our efforts.

EDIT: added a sentence

So, you did not mention SOTT to him?

I did by referring to the site I find promissing.

If you did it the way you've written in the previous post, then it does sound like you are representing SOTT and trying to promote it. That's not good, because you don't represent SOTT and your email is basically asking him to promote SOTT with his cartoons. It is not at all clear that you do not represent SOTT in that email - it very much sounds like you work for SOTT - have you already sent this email?

So, you already sent it. Please let us know if you receive a reply and in the future, please try harder to not sound like you are representing SOTT - in fact, it would have been better to run it by the forum first before mailing it so other eyes could read it and tell you how it sounds. Please don't write him again unless you get a response and at that time you can clarify that you are not affiliated with the site at all.

Yes I did. After talking about this flier-idea here in this thread I thought writing a mail to him would be appreciated. I'm just another Sott-reader who happens to be an illustrator and who comes up with this idea, contacting a colleague, proposing my idea and waiting for an answer.

:/ I should have added something like: "If you are interested, I would like to propose it to the editorial staff, since I am just a reader of the SOTT-news and not part of the staff" AND I should have posted it in the forum like I did before. Instead I was hasty getting things done. Hindsight is easier than foresight. But what might be the consequence, if he thinks or does not think, I am working for Sott?

That's what we don't know, which is why it's always wise to be very clear about who you are and whether or not you are representing someone else. Who knows - nothing may come of it, or he may ask us to pay him for posting his cartoons from time to time which we do, or he may do any number of things or not do any number of things. We don't know, but we'll soon find out.

Is there a rule, that posting someones artworks in a nonprofit-picture-of-the-day-context violates copy right? However, let's hope for the best.

This should not be a problem (unless you're a copyright freak) but he might chose not to be associated with the Sott in any way osit.

:D Here is the answer:

Hello XXX,

Thanks so much for the note and the kind words. It's always great to hear from like-minded artists and, yes, by all means, you have my permission to use Mr. Fish cartoons to promote SOTT. Also, feel free to contact me about doing anything for the site. I think it looks great and I'd be honored to contribute.

Peace, etc.
Dwayne
(Mr. Fish)
