Wow! That was one heck of a quake. I am glad you guys are alright, Ironfloyd and mkrnhr. Stay vigilant.

Ditto to that.

Ditto from me as well--take care you guys!

From me, as well. That's a huge quake. And the duration - geezus. Take care you two, and any others in the vicinity.

I'm glad you two are okay. I guess earthquakes might behave in ways and places not expected, so even though I live in a place that has not been hit by large quakes in recorded history, I asked a couple of acquintances who were present in Nepal when the 7.8 quake hit in April about all the quaky details, which people in earthquake prone places know all about.

One of them told me about the precautions one can take including the "duck-cover-hold" routine. About that and more there are advices on this page from Iceland: http://www.almannavarnir.is/displayer.asp?cat_id=140 They do not write about the hazard that gas can pose, because they don't use that much in Iceland, so one has to read it with consideration for local circumstances.

Don't forget to breathe (something I would forget, I am sure)!
Thanks all :)
Breathing (and smoking :cool2: ) is important indeed. I advised a few neighbours to breath deeply as some appeared to be in a state of shock and it seemed to have an immediate effect.

Thinking of you guys in Chile at this moment.

I was in the Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand, on the outskirts of the city in 2011 and the aftermath and aftershocks were pretty scary! Im waiting to hear whether the tsunami alert is still in place in NZ presently from this Chile quake.

We look forward to your updates from Chile. :)

Glad to hear forum members are OK.

8.3 really sounds huge - and it is! By comparison, the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes in the US:

Susan Hough, a seismologist of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), has estimated the earthquakes' magnitudes as around magnitude 7.
They remain the most powerful earthquakes to hit the contiguous United States east of the Rocky Mountains in recorded history.

Indeed, take care of yourselves!

So glad both of you are ok!

I came across a link showing Ramon Ulloa transmitting the earthquake without even batting an eyelid at his radio station.

I'm glad you guys are ok as well, but this is one of my biggest concerns right now, I live in California near the 1994 earthquake epicenter, which was in Northridge, I dunno what will happened if something :scared: like that hits this area.....
