Earthquakes around the world

I will read through the recent posts in this thread but wanted to ask if anyone knows if this (limited to no activity) is a precursor to something looming or an indication that this may be the calm before the storm.

I think at the very least one can reasonably assume that some activity will be coming to the west coast of the US in the near future. It is a part of the ring of fire, and the lack of activity is suspicious. It's not like it's any more stable than the rest of the Pacific region. Of course, as with all future things, we can watch the signs and be prepared, but still have to wait and see what happens...

thanks jonathan. i've looked at the charts a few more times this morning in disbelief, specifically the north american chart which is silent and void of activity. again, thanks!

Maybe of interest - Dutchsinse is noting the following:

The North American Craton (plate) has been displaced from California to Oklahoma over the past hour (1-2pm CT April 21, 2016).

The pressure transfer across the plate began with a M3.2 earthquake off the coast of Northwest California along the Gorda Escarpment.

Just minutes after the M3.2 struck NW California, a similar M3.4 earthquake struck Southern California near the Salton Sea Volcanic buttes.

A few minutes after the earthquake in Southern California, yet another similar M3.6 earthquake struck along the edge of the craton at the fracking operations in Oklahoma.

Looks like a second quake has hit Ecuador in as many days.

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 magnitude struck off Ecuador's disaster-stricken coast on Thursday, as survivors of an earlier deadly quake that killed 587 people clamored for food, water and medicine in parts of the disaster zone.

The latest quake hit about 100 km (62 miles) north-northwest of Portoviejo and at a depth of 10 km (six miles), said the U.S. Geological Survey. There were no immediate reports of damage and there was no tsunami warning. President Rafael Correa said on Twitter that three aftershocks were registered on Thursday night, adding “have strength!” Saturday's deadly quake was a massive 7.8 magnitude.

“We're trying to survive. We need food,” said Galo Garcia, a 65-year-old lawyer as he waited in line for water from a truck in beachside village of San Jacinto. “There's nothing in the shops. We're eating the vegetables we grow.” A crowd nearby chanted, “We want food.” Correa's socialist government, facing a mammoth rebuilding task at a time of greatly reduced oil revenues in the OPEC nation, said there was no lack of supplies, just problems with distribution that should be quickly resolved. The government quickly moved supplies to the main towns and set up shelters for more than 25,000 people in soccer stadiums and airports, but shattered roads have impeded the operation.

On streets near Pedernales, one of the worst-hit towns, children from rural areas held signs begging for food. Many people left villages to seek help, and those who stayed behind felt the pinch. “All of us here have been marginalized. The others are receiving things, but we're not,” said Darwin Gachila, 33, as he cradled his baby daughter, flanked by his wife and two other children in the small village of Cojimies. A government official at a food storage point outside the town of Pedernales asked a supplicant, Jose Gregorio Basulor, 55, to stay calm. “I can be patient but not the children!” he shouted back. “They are crying.” –CNBC

The volcano Kerinci, Sumatra in Indonesia - last rumbles near 2009 - is showing activity:

Volcano Activity in Indonesia on April 22 2016 04:06 PM (UTC).

Authorities are preparing routes and shelters for evacuation as seismic activity of Mount Kerinci volcano in Kerinci district of Jambi rises, officials of the country's disaster agency and volcanology agency said on Friday. Over 10,000 people living on the slope of the volcano are vulnerable to eruption risks, Ansari, senior official of disaster agency at the district revealed. "The activity of the volcano has been rising in recent days. So we must anticipate it," he told Xinhua by phone from the district. Coordination among the authorities at the district and those at the provincial level has been boosted to counter the possible impacts of eruption, Ansari added. Mount Kerinci of 3,805 meters high in Sumatra Island has witnessed small eruptions recently, Henda Gunawan, head of observation at the national volcanology agency said on Friday. "And its eruption has been intense since the last two weeks," the volcanologist told Xinhua over phone from West Java. "The volcanology agency has recommended people not enter the area in the radius of 3 kilometers from the crater," said Gunawan. Mount Kerinci is one of 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which lies on the Ring of Fire, a belt of seismic activity running around the basin of the Pacific Ocean.

Added: there is this new article out on Sott - but it doesn't list them all by name :P

Unrest also seems to be growing among the world's super-volcanoes. Iceland (which is home to some of the most dangerous volcanoes on the planet), Santorini in Greece, Uturuncu in Bolivia, the Yellowstone and Long Valley calderas in the U.S., Laguna del Maule in Chile, Italy's Campi Flegrei - almost all of the world's active super-volcanic systems are now exhibiting some signs of inflation, an early indication that pressure is building in these volcanic systems.

If there is any correlation between the solar wind, the KP index/geomag storms and earthquakes, apparently its just reached KP 5 so it'll be something to keep an eye on for the next day or two. Predicted to reach 6. Also, this is when S0 and others note to be alert for power outages, electrical fires and the like:

From twitter (im posting from my phone):

'ALERT! Geomagnetic Storm (Kp-Index = 5)'

There is indeed a correlation, at least from a probability point of view. What I often monitor is this chart when I have a moment:

ace-mag-swepam-24-hour.gif

When the speed (yellow, fourth panel) and density (orange, third panel) are high, and often when the Bz component of the magnetic field (red, first panel) goes negative with a high amplitude, there is more seismic activity or weather extremes. That's my limited observation FWIW.

They're not the only factors of course.
