Earthquakes around the world

Picking up where we left off - the recent quake in Alaska is pretty big, preceded by smaller ones which aren't so unusual, Philippines is shaking and another in Algeria:

An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale struck the central Italian region of Umbria on Monday night, and was followed by two smaller quakes this morning, creating panic among residents and closing schools in the hilltop town of Orvieto.

Lakeview is the one area of Oregon where there seem to be a good amount of minor earthquakes. This one's stronger than what I usually notice.

I have lived in Australia since 1972 and hardly recall a handful of earthquakes of significance. This year I cannot even even begin to count how many we've had above M3, luckily in sparsely populated areas for now, but if it ramps up even more and it looks to be heading that way, we are in for some rockin'n'rollin'.

5.1-magnitude earthquake hits western coast of Mexico

http://tass.ru/en/society/879613

No injuries or damages have been reported so far

WASHINGTON, June 2. /TASS/. A 5.1-magnitude earthquake has struck the western coast of Mexico, US Geological Survey said on Thursday.

The epicenter of the earthquake lay in 195 kilometers to the south-west of the city of Cihuatlan in the state of Jalisco at the depth of 34 kilometers.

No injuries or damages have been reported so far.

The Hong Kong Observatory earlier reported a 6.8-magnitude earthquake. However, according to US Geological Survey and European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the magnitude of tremors stood at 5.1.

Thanks for the comments Cleo and Stellar :) It's good to have some local opinions on the shaking going on.

A few places which have had multiple quakes, some low like in California, Puerto Rico (is there a volcano or something going on around there?) and some higher like Indonesia - maybe aftershocks from the large one? Another area of interest is on the fault near Africa with a quake in Mauritius and then further along at the Owen Fracture Zone.

The below is probably 36 hours but there've been 48 quakes in 24 hours and i've kept those of interest:

What I am going to say are just my opinions based on a fair amount of experience; take it or leave it. I grew up in California and lived 10 years in San Luis Obispo which is right on top of the San Andreas fault. I also lived for 10 years on the island of Hawaii, so I have spent my whole life in earthquake country and have felt my share.

I think the earthquakes in the 2-3 ranges are not even really worth mentioning. Kind of like background noise. Once they get into the mid 4's, they will 'get your attention'. A lot of it depends on the substrate of the earth as well as the type of earthquake. Certainly a 4, if there is a granite substrate, will produce a significant jolt. If the earth is more crumbly, it feels different. Anyway, the 2's and 3's (again - just my opinion) are not all that significant. The 4's are more of a wakeup call that maybe something bigger is coming...or just pressure relief.

There was a 6.7 quake in about 2006 in Hawaii and I was about 50 miles from the epicenter on the other side of Mauna Kea, a 13,000 foot volcanic mountain. (actually Hawaii is a giant mountain 33,000 feet tall rising from the ocean floor...taller than Everest.) The ground undulated big time. It was in the morning and we were all sleeping. The bed started walking around and I bolted up and grabbed the kids and we dashed outside. Even so, 50 miles from a 6.7 and no damage to our house, an old funky plantation house from 1938. Those plantation houses are of an interesting construction: a Japanese design which is basically a wood box on short stilts. Very flexible. And if the ground shifts, you just cut new posts to level the house and on you go. So, the damage from a quake has a lot to do with the construction of the buildings. There are so many houses in California on concrete slabs (no flexibility). I don't think there is a slab built house in California that is not cracked at least somewhere. In Oregon I live in a quaint town with a ton of old brick buildings: those are going to be absolute toast if and when a big one hits. Concrete, bricks and glass are a bad recipe in an earthquake. But it depends: is the earth shaking side to side, or going up and down; trembling and vibrating; a sudden jolt or a sudden shift? They are all a bit different. Unfortunately the raw numbers don't really reveal any of that.

Strong 6.0-Magnitude Quake Hits Off New Zealand – USGS

http://sputniknews.com/asia/20160606/1040832668/quake-hits-new-zealand.html

A strong 6.0-magnitude struck Monday almost 90 miles off a remote New Zealand island, the US Geological Survey reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The shallow quake occurred at the depth of 6.2 miles southeast of the Kermadec Islands in the South Pacific.

No information about the damage or casualties was immediately available.

Parts of New Zealand lie on the so-called Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped string of volcanoes around the Pacific Rim, where about 90 percent of the world's quakes occur.

From today and yesterday; another big quake in Indonesia just now, aftershocks and prequakes in Mexico (the big one noted by Casper above), multiple quakes in Oklahoma today and yesterday; multiple quakes in Chile; a big one in New Zealand; another in Cyprus yesteday and one in Tajikistan;the geomag situation is unsettled but the trackers have dropped by comparison to yesterday. It strikes me as a lot of medium quakes at the moment:

Indonesia earthquake: Tremor measuring 6.3 strikes off eastern coast near Molucca islands

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties

The epicentre of the quake was 33km deep, about 124km west-northwest of the Molucca islands USGS

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 has struck off the eastern cost of Indonesia.

The epicentre of the quake was 38.8km (24 miles) deep, about 126km (80 miles) west-northwest of Kota Ternate, the US Geological Survey said.

The USGS initially estimated the quake had a magnitude of 6.6.

Local media reports the earthquake was widely felt by residents throughout the region, but there were no immediate reports o damage or casualties.

The NOOA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it saw no tsunami danger from the quake.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

In December 2004, a massive earthquake off Sumatra island triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.

I used to think that way, but the magnitude although relevant to certain issues, say ... destruction of buildings, damages in electric structures, disruption in services etc... many involving people, one can say as you mention, are worth it, ... the thing is, even the 1-3 magnitude are relevant too, the whole world is shaking and the shaking is increasing, not all measurements by organizations are equal, depends in their own parameters as well, also there is the possibility that the origin of the shaking could come from above, in my particular case, I usually disregard those of 1-3 magnitude, those are hundreds per day registered at national seismologic! sometimes I do, depends on the major earthquake ... and I am almost sure that other regional or by country seismologic organizations/authorities may have such data quite similar ... and, nowadays that I am seeing the videos by suspiciousobservers, that correlates the Sun with the earthquakes and had been reading the Earth Changes and the Human Cosmic Connection book, which correlates earthquakes to another set of phenomena, including asteroids/comets ... earthquakes, even from low magnitude had become interesting ... fwiw
