Series of earthquakes in California: Big one coming?
Published on Jul 19, 2016
In the last seven days, central California has been hit by 70 small earthquakes. The seismic swarm has been concentrated on the fault lines between Los Angeles and San Francisco. RT correspondent Brigida Santos has the report and says that the US Geological Survey does not believe this is evidence of a big earthquake occurring in the near future.

"33 earthquakes in 30 days – the town that won’t stop trembling
It all began after a 5.0 magnitude earthquake shook the town in the middle of the night on 28 May, followed by an even stronger 5.1 magnitude aftershock about an hour later."

7.7-magnitude quake strikes Mariana Islands

By Susannah Cullinane and Dave Alsup, CNN

Updated 1129 GMT (1929 HKT) July 30, 2016

No tsunami warnings are issued
The quake is felt in neighboring Guam

(CNN)A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean early Saturday.

The quake occurred at a depth of 117 miles (212 km) some 19 miles south-southwest of the uninhabited island of Agrihan in the U.S. territory, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

No tsunami warning has been issued, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.

Spokesman Paul Whitmore said a barely noticeable wave of about two inches was recorded in Saipan, the largest of the islands.
The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands lies about 5,800 miles south-southwest of California's Pacific shore.

The quake was felt in the neighboring territory of Guam, with Twitter user @JRaemier telling CNN it woke her up and @Katfayeee saying it was the biggest earthquake she'd experienced.

The USGS reported five smaller earthquakes in the Mariana Islands area over the next 10 hours. The next biggest measured 4.9 and occurred 7 miles (11 km) south of Agrihan at a depth of 122 miles.

@whosurtwit It was the biggest earthquake I've ever felt. No objects fall off and no damage either.

Magnitude 5.2 earthquake strikes off Greece's Crete -USGS

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Crete in Greece on Saturday the United States Geological Survey reported.

The quake's epicenter was located 63 miles (100 km) west southwest of Chania, Crete. It was very shallow, with a depth of 5.6 miles (9 km). (Reporting by Lisa Von Ahn; Editing by Sandra Maler)

Though the geomagnetic field is 'quiet', i wonder if these quakes are related to the following coronal mass ejection (CME) -: (added: there have been 33 quakes in 24hrs, the usual being ~ 30 so no more than usual)

@TamithaSkov @halocme This event was actually included as a halo CME by a LASCO expert. The speed was 170-350 km/s.[/b]

@TamithaSkov Looks like a stealthy eruption. It is not confirmed by LASCO, but I predict its arrival at L1 on Aug 1.

Japan Panics, "Grinds To A Halt" As Officials Issue Massive Earthquake False Alarm

Source: https://www.rt.com/news/354199-japan-earthquake-warning-alert/

Snippet:
With the government losing faith in the central bank's capabilities, it seems perhaps they should not be throwing stones from their glass house. In a shockingly unsurprising snafu on Monday, trains ground to a halt, a mobile network became jammed, and thousands of citizens began to panic as Japan’s meteorological agency sent an alarm that a massive earthquake was about to strike the capital Kanto Region, home to more than 40 million people... before admitting the false alarm: "it's an error on our part, we sincerely apologize."
20160801_japan_0.jpg

The warning was issued at 5:09pm local time on Monday, and as RT reports, quickly relayed to mobile apps that warned millions of Tokyo residents about an earthquake measuring 7 out of 7 on the scale used within the country – equivalent to 9.1 on the Richter scale, and as bad or worse than the Tohoku disaster of 2011.

“When I saw the Yurekuru app screen, I prepared to die,” read one tweet.

Rumors circulated on social media about the possible causes, which included a lightning bolt, Godzilla and “Pokemon Go” congestion; but the organization said the erroneous reading was produced by electrical noise. Interference from electrical currents disturbing the sensor or cable is a frequent cause of false alarms in early-warning systems, though equipment is usually designed to filter out the noise.

Witness location : Janesville (United States) (31 km NW from epicenter)
Haven't felt an earthquake like these two before. It was almost like you could hear it coming towards you and didn't seem to have the usual wave type feeling. Just shook the house and got louder gradually.

Witness location : Janesville (United States) (32 km NW from epicenter)
Shook hard for 10-15 seconds, I think 3 aftershocks since. Probably the biggest one I've experienced in 32 years in this area.

Witness location : Penn Valley (United States) (135 km SW from epicenter)
Just felt the house roll a little. Was an obvious earthquake. Was wondering if it was leading up to a worse earthquake.

Witness location : Cupertino (United States) (352 km SW from epicenter)
Small thump
