Here are the three major impacts:

According to the latest update the death toll in Italy has risen to 120:

At least 120 people have been killed and 368 injured in an earthquake that hit a mountainous area of central Italy, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has said.

The magnitude-6.2 quake struck at 03:36 (01:36 GMT), 100km (65 miles) north-east of Rome, not far from Perugia.

Many of the dead were in the historic town of Amatrice, where the mayor said three-quarters of the town was destroyed, and in nearby Accumoli.

Many people are still believed buried under the rubble, with hundreds hurt.

Mr Renzi paid tribute to the volunteers and civil defence officials who had rushed to the scene in the middle of the night and used their bare hands to dig for survivors.

He promised "no family, no city, no hamlet will be left behind".

Mr Renzi paid tribute to the volunteers and civil defence officials who had rushed to the scene in the middle of the night and used their bare hands to dig for survivors.

He promised "no family, no city, no hamlet will be left behind".

In 2009 a M6.3 quake hit L'Aquila (a few kilometres away from the latest quake) and killed 308 people.

Despite the politicians' claim, the Italian people has been "left behind". Since 2009 no major upgrade in building standard has been implemented. Those building standards are poor while the whole region is known to be located on an active fault line. This is one of the reasons why those quakes kill so many people.

In Japan, a M7.3 (10 times more powerful than a 6.3) would make virtually no victim.

Actually the worse might still be to come since M6.3 is not the greatest this fault line has produced. In 1915, a M6.7 hit Avezzano (L'Aquila district) and killed 96% of the local population (more than 30.000 people).

Looks like a war Zone.

Maybe related to the recent shaking in Italy and around the world - am i reading it right thinking this began rising before the 24th which continued to through the morning?:

It seems it begins on 22/23rd on the ACE mag field (i can't exactly read these things):

Here in Italy we are unfortunately now up to 247 dead and still many burried under. It's very sad, lots of children have died, the youngest one being 8 months old, one of many sad stories is of a Mother who had moved to Ascoli after the terrible earthquake in Aquila only to now lose her 18 month old baby.

Well the timing looks about right. The first chart shows the Planetary K index:

The K-index quantifies disturbances in the horizontal component of earth's magnetic field with an integer in the range 0–9 with 1 being calm and 5 or more indicating a geomagnetic storm. It is derived from the maximum fluctuations of horizontal components observed on a magnetometer during a three-hour interval.

The index rose to 5, which indicates a geomagnetic storm, between the 23rd at 18:00 and the 24th at 03:00 UTC, which translates to 23rd at 20:00 and 24th at 05:00 CEST (Italian local time). The seconds chart shows the ACE real-time solar winds. Can't read the figures but it looks like there's a spike around the same time for those indicators too.

The earthquake did happen during the night/early morning of the 24th so it could definitely be related to the spike in solar winds observed in the charts.

New strong earthquake hits central Italy’s Amatrice

“We could have a larger earthquake, a much larger earthquake, than what happened in Italy, on [California’s] San Andreas fault, or any of the other hundreds of faults in California, really at any time. It’s just the reality of living on a plate boundary of the Earth’s crust,” Benthien explained.

Interesting article published by MailOnline:

The rare, deep-Earth tremor that shook the planet: Waves from north Atlantic 'weather bomb' are measured in Japan

Summary:
- A 'weather bomb' storm over the North Atlantic caused deep sea waves
- These travelled through the Earth to Japan where they were detected
- This is the first time this type of wave has been detected by scientists
- The findings could improve the early detection of earthquakes, they say
(To see illustrations go to dailymail)

A rare deep-Earth tremor has been detected for the first time on the ocean floor in Japan.

Using seismic equipment, researchers have managed to trace its location to a distant and powerful storm between Greenland and Iceland.

The findings could help experts learn more about the Earth's inner structure and improve the detection of earthquakes and oceanic storms.

The storm that caused the deep-Earth tremor was a 'weather bomb' that struck over the North Atlantic.

This is a small but potent storm in which pressure quickly builds, creating a more vigorous storm.

As the storm hit, groups of waves pounded the ocean floor between Greenland and Iceland.

These subtle waves run through the Earth and can be detected in distant places.

The researchers used seismic equipment at 200 sites on both land and on the seafloor in Japan to track the tremors.

Their readings showed that they were secondary (S) wave microseisms – or very faint tremors.

Unlike primary (P) waves, which are usually detected during major hurricanes, S waves are slow, and only move through rock.

This marks the first time scientists have observed an S wave.

In an accompanying article, Peter Gerstoft and Peter Bromirski, from the University of California in San Diego said that the discovery 'gives seismologists a new tool with which to study Earth's deeper structure.'

While the deep-sea tremor were discovered, these should not be mistaken as an earthquake.

In an article for The Conversation, David Rotheray, Professor of Planetary Geosciences at The Open University, said: 'There's a danger that this research could be misreported as an Atlantic storm causing an earthquake in Japan.

TYPES OF SEISMIC WAVES

The two main types of seismic waves are surface and body waves.

Body waves can travel through the Earth's inner layers, but surface waves can only move along the surface of the planet like ripples on water.

There are two main types of body wave - primary (P) and secondary (S).

P waves are longitudinal waves which means the vibrations travel in the same direction.

These can travel through both rock and liquids, like water.

S waves are transverse waves, which means the vibrations are at right angles to the direction of travel.

Unlike P waves, S waves can only move through rock.

'The reality is that the Japanese scientists detected an intensification of the usual background hum.'

However, while the tremors in Japan were not an earthquake, the findings, which are published in Science, could improve the understanding of Earth's inner core, and could be used to improve the detection of earthquakes in the future.

Professor Rotheray added: 'Knowing we can isolate the signals from storms could be particularly useful because the region where the weather bomb occurred almost never experiences earthquakes.

'So storms elsewhere may in time prove equally useful.'

While the deep-sea tremor were discovered, these should not be mistaken as an earthquake. ...There's a danger that this research could be misreported as an Atlantic storm causing an earthquake in Japan. ... while the tremors in Japan were not an earthquake, the findings ... could be used to improve the detection of earthquakes in the future.

I'm wondering if it's the scientists playing with semantics to obscure some interrelations between different geological/weather events because they don't correspond with their current paradigm?

August 27: A Magnitude 4.8 earthquake rattled Jackson Hole.

http://wyomingwhiskey.blogspot.fr/
It was centered near Bondurant, WY and happened at 20:47:47.20 UTC, or 2:47 PM. Map of area. It's unknown if any serious mountain rockfall resulted from the quake. It shook hard for a minute or two depending upon your location.

It lasted about 10 minutes. It was closer to the Wind River Range than the Tetons. Over 450 people reported feeling the quake to the USGS. Some of the reports came from people who were 100 miles from the epicenter - Idaho Falls & Yellowstone.

Central Italy rocked by new 4.4 aftershock following deadly earthquake

https://www.rt.com/news/357479-aftershock-central-italy-rocks/

A new 4.4-magnitude aftershock with a depth of about 9 km has rattled the region not far from the town of Arquata del Tronto in central Italy, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported. The area suffered a deadly earthquake four days ago.

The aftershock’s center is located nearly 7 km from Arquata del Tronto. The tremor was felt in Rome, situated more than 150 kilometers south of the town, according to local broadcaster RaiNews24.

A powerful earthquake hit central Italy on Wednesday night, leaving at least 290 people dead with the death toll still rising.

A number of small towns and villages were reduced to rubble. Rescue teams dug deep underneath the rubble in the search for possible survivors. Strong tremors were felt in the Italian capital on Wednesday night as well.

As many as 2,500 people have lost their homes to the earthquake, according to the data released by the Italian civil defense authorities.

More than 1,800 aftershocks have rocked the region since Wednesday’s quake with Saturday night being the first one without any major tremors.

Rescue operations are still in progress.
