Tsunami warning issued after 7.1 magnitude quake off New Zealand coast

https://www.rt.com/news/357928-new-zealand-quake-strong/

A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of New Zealand, 167km northeast of the town of Gisborne, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Officials have urged people along the coast to evacuate to higher ground.

The USGS did not issue a tsunami warning following the earthquake, and has downgraded the magnitude from an initial 7.2 to 7.1, at a depth of 30.7km.

There have been no reports of casualties or damage to buildings as yet.

New Zealand’s GeoNet reported that it was a 7.1 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter located at a depth of 55km.
Almost 800 people live within a 100-km zone around the epicenter, local media report. The town of Gisborne, with a population of 34,274, lies 167.9km away.

DETAILS TO FOLLOW

I spoke to my NZ cousin about this one, and she reported that the Earth had moved for her.
She lives at the other end of the North Island.

They called off the tsunami alert.

It was a rolling sensation most people felt.
Me I did't even wake up nor did my cat stir but plenty of other people in my town woke. We are inland a bit directly west from where it struck.

One of my friends said it felt like he was walking down his hallway floating on the ocean. Unusual our quakes are normally sharper and shorter,
It was a big deep quake off the coast.

When there's an average of ~30 quakes a day, in the last 24 hours there have been 55 - and at least 16 were shallow aftershocks from the NZ quake, averaging around M5. And just over 24 hours ago there was a quake in Greece: 'Magnitude 4.2 earthquake16 km from Ithaca, Ithaki, Greece · Sep 1, 6:07 AM - which comes on the heels of the minor shallow quakes in Italy and southern Spain the day before, and the deadly M6.2 quake in Italy on the 24th September.

Also, thanks to those posting their personal reports, it's good to hear you are all ok.

5.6 magnitude earthquake in Oklahoma today. We felt it as the house rocking a bit more than usual when the washer goes on spin cycle.

Based on a short Google search, that's as large as the largest known earthquake in Oklahoma.

There was also an earthquake the same magnitude in California.

It was out under the sea, there may be a tsunami? Or at least a shallow wave?

People in North Texas and across several states felt an earthquake that hit northern Oklahoma Saturday morning.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey map, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake was reported just northwest of Pawnee, Oklahoma at 7:02 a.m., equaling the largest earthquake to ever hit the state.

The quake prompted authorities in the town of Pawnee, near the quake's center, to dispatch officers to check key facilities, such as the local water plant.

Pawnee County Emergency Management reported that at least one building collapsed, according to local media reports.

Police radio traffic reported that the quake had apparently caused several structural fires, including one barn, near the town of around 2,000 people.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The magnitude-5.6 equals a temblor that struck the town of Prague, in Lincoln County, in November 2011, according to the USGS. Saturday's quake is just the fourth of 5.0 magnitude or greater in Oklahoma's history, according to a Tulsa World report.

The USGS told News 8 people reported feeling the quake from North Texas to North Dakota.

Multiple aftershocks, as powerful as a 3.6 magnitude, hit the same area near Pawnee in the hour following the initial temblor, the USGS reported.

Social media (https://tagboard.com/earthquake/315629) erupted with people saying they felt the record-tying tremor. Stories of shaking houses and swaying high-rises poured in from areas hundreds of miles apart. What did you feel? Click and share with WFAA.
