A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of New Zealand, 167km northeast of the town of Gisborne, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Officials have urged people along the coast to evacuate to higher ground.
The USGS did not issue a tsunami warning following the earthquake, and has downgraded the magnitude from an initial 7.2 to 7.1, at a depth of 30.7km.
There have been no reports of casualties or damage to buildings as yet.
New Zealand’s GeoNet reported that it was a 7.1 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter located at a depth of 55km.
Almost 800 people live within a 100-km zone around the epicenter, local media report. The town of Gisborne, with a population of 34,274, lies 167.9km away.

5.6 magnitude earthquake in Oklahoma today. We felt it as the house rocking a bit more than usual when the washer goes on spin cycle.
Based on a short Google search, that's as large as the largest known earthquake in Oklahoma.

It was out under the sea, there may be a tsunami? Or at least a shallow wave?
Horse began galloping across pasture. Dog was frightened. Items toppling from shelves. Sustained shaking for appx 30 seconds.
It was way more than 5.8! I felt a 5.8 before. This was more like a 6.7!

Pawnee County Emergency Management reported that at least one building collapsed, according to local media reports.
Police radio traffic reported that the quake had apparently caused several structural fires, including one barn, near the town of around 2,000 people.
There were no immediate reports of injuries.
The magnitude-5.6 equals a temblor that struck the town of Prague, in Lincoln County, in November 2011, according to the USGS. Saturday's quake is just the fourth of 5.0 magnitude or greater in Oklahoma's history, according to a Tulsa World report.
The USGS told News 8 people reported feeling the quake from North Texas to North Dakota.
Multiple aftershocks, as powerful as a 3.6 magnitude, hit the same area near Pawnee in the hour following the initial temblor, the USGS reported.

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake has struck off the southern part of the Philippines, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said Sunday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The quake struck at about 2:38 GMT on Sunday, with its epicenter lying at a depth of about 12.4 kilometers (7.7 miles), eight kilometers south-west of the Lapinigan settlement, the USGS said.
There have been no immediate reports of damages or casualties.
