Bárðarbunga - updated information

26th August 2014 17:53 - from geoscientist on duty

Just under 900 earthquakes have been detected by the network since midnight, somewhat fewer than at the same time yesterday. The intrusive dike is now about 40 km long. Most of the activity has been near the edge of the glacier. An earthquake M4.6 (EMSC M4.4) occurred at 11:56. Reports were received from Akureyri (a town in northern Iceland) that the earthquake was found there. The earthquakes are mostly on similar depth as before, i.e. 8-12 km. A few were larger than M3. Few earthquakes were located in the Bárðarbunga caldera today.

Still a lot of earthquakes in Iceland.

27th August 2014 06:30 - from geoscientist on duty

The night started with a 5.3 event in Bardarbunga at 00:16 hours.

Around half an hour later activity around the tip of the dyke started increasing and reached some kind of "high" around 2 o'clock and has continued at that level since with many events of magnitude 2-3.

Just before 2 o'clock there was a magnitude 4.5 event just east of the Askja caldera. Few microearthquakes have been measured there earlier this week.

At 02:50 there was a 5.2 event again in Bardarbunga.

Total events automatically detected from midnight until now are 500, most of them around the tip
of the northward migrating dyke.

Implications of Askja event is still premature to speculate on. However, we are watching the area closely.

There seems to be a slight increase in activity compared to same time. The >M5 events in Bardarbunga are still interpreted as being relaxation process of the caldera due to magma pressure changes and the propagating dyke.

Up date of the mysterious lights seen at the time of the Napa Quake
EEL (Earthquake Lights) seen at Napa

MOUNTAIN VIEW (KPIX 5) SF Ca. (Propaganda News Service)
Several people called the KPIX 5 newsroom after Sunday morning’s magnitude 6.0 earthquake in Napa, reporting mysterious flashes of light in the sky. Witnesses said the strange phenomenon looked like lightning.
Similar flashes of light have been reported in earthquakes around the world, from Japan to Peru

Friedemann Freund, a scientist with the SETI Institute in Mountain View, said the same thing happened during Sunday morning’s earthquake. And it wasn’t a transformer blowing up or UFOs.
“What they are, are a consequence of the stresses building up deep below the earth, seven miles like in the case of the Napa Valley earthquake,” Freund told KPIX 5.

He calls the phenomenon “earthquake lights,” the quick buildup of stress that causes an electric current to flow to the surface and burst through the earth. This typically happens before or during an earthquake.
Several North Bay witnesses contacted Freund at the SETI Institute about seeing several flashes around the time the Napa quake hit. They said there was one or two seconds between each one.

Freund has been studying the lights for 12 years. His team recently looked at 65 occurrences around the world over the last 400 years. Most seismologists don’t believe such things are real.
“There are things that we still don’t understand about the earth, so why not accept unusual, exceptionally unusual phenomena taking place? And the light outburst from the ground is one of them.”

Flashing lights all over Santa Rosa, Ca during Aug 24, 14 earthquake. Camera is about 7 minutes off, but it is right when quake hit around 3:20am. 3:13:26 and 3:13:53 are BIG flashes.

Hmm... guess the possible methane release may have not panned out, fudge.

Around 100 aftershocks have struck the Napa area since Sunday morning’s magnitude 6.0 tremor. The quake has prompted renewed attention to unmapped, small faults. Paul Deanno reports. (8/27/14)

A visualisation of the response to the earthquake by the OpenStreetMap community. Within 12 hours the white flashes indicate edits to the map (generally by tracing satellite/aerial photography).
Over the following days a large number of additions to the map are made with many roads (green primary, red secondary) added. Also many other features were added such as the blue glowing refugee camps that emerge.
A lot of these edits were made possible by a number of satellite and aerial imagery passes in the days after the quake, that were release to the public for tracing and analysis.

KENOSHA, Wis.—
A minor earthquake rumbled through southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

Seismologists with the U.S. Geological Survey say the 2.4 magnitude quake happened just before 10 p.m. Monday and was centered about 30 miles from Kenosha, just east of McHenry, Ill.

Not a major quake by far, but unusual for this area; the unusual seems to be increasing though.

Same area as the one quoted above. Not much on news about it.

Again, kind of minor but unusual for this area.

Yes I noticed it had been upgraded to 7.9. It looks like it's had devastating effects and I'm sure we won't find out the true extent of the damage and loss of life for a few days yet. It looks like the earth changes are really hotting up right now.
