A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido, the country's Meteorological Agency said on Friday.

The seismic focus was located in the southern part of the island. The epicenter of the quake was registered at the depth of 30 kilometers (18.6 miles). The tremors were measured at five on the Japanese seven-point seismic intensity scale.

There was no threat of a tsunami, the agency noted.

It added that there was no information about casualties or damage caused by the earthquake.

An earthquake hit northern Haiti late on Saturday, killing at least 14 people, injuring more than 100 and sparking a scramble by rescue agencies to help towns in the impoverished Caribbean country battered by the shockwave.

A local official said at least eight people died in Port-de-Paix on the northern coast near the epicenter of the magnitude 5.9 quake, which struck at a depth of 11.7 kilometers (7.3 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Four people were killed in and around the town of Gros-Morne farther south, local authorities said, including a woman who died from a heart attack suffered after the quake.

Another person was killed in the town of Chansolme when a house collapsed and one other person in Saint-Louis-du-Nord.

Rescue teams fanned out to help residents, many of whom were still dealing with the trauma of a devastating earthquake in 2010.

Port-de-Paix, Gros-Morne, the town of Chansolme and the northern island of Tortuga were among the areas worst hit, Haiti’s civil protection agency said in a statement.

“The shock was felt across all departments of the country, giving rise to panic in several towns,” the agency said.

President Jovenel Moise urged people to remain calm and said on Twitter he had ordered “all of the republic’s resources” to be directed toward assisting recovery efforts. On Sunday morning he said that he was en route to Port-de-Paix and Gros-Morne.

A magnitude 6 earthquake struck off the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, killing three people in Java and damaging some buildings while causing panic among residents.

The quake, located in the Bali Sea, also shook buildings on the resort island and some residents briefly left their homes in Bali’s capital, Denpasar.

The annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank are being held this week in Bali and attended by more than 19,000 delegates and other guests, including ministers, central bank heads and some leaders.

The three deaths in East Java occurred after buildings collapsed while people were sleeping, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency, said in a statement.

The USGS put the epicenter at 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Sumberanyar on Java island.

Indonesia suffered a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake and tsunami last month on the island of Sulawesi that killed more than 2,000 people.

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck remote New Britain island in Papua New Guinea on Thursday, the United States Geological Survey said, though there were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake hit about 200 km (125 miles) southwest of the town of Rabaul at a depth of almost 40 km, just before 7 a.m. local time (2100 GMT Wednesday).

“We felt the earthquake a bit, but it was not too strong,” Constable Roy Michael told Reuters by phone from Rabaul police station.

He said there was no damage in the town, but officers had not yet been able to contact villages closer to the epicenter.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said waves less than 0.3 meter high could be expected on coastlines in Papua New Guinea and neighboring Solomon Islands. Australia’s Tsunami Warning Center said its coastlines were not at risk.

The quake was initially recorded with a magnitude of 7.3 but was downgraded. At least two aftershocks with a magnitude greater than 5 shortly followed.

In March, a 6.6 magnitude quake struck nearby and no casualties or damage were reported.

Papua New Guinea, one of the world’s poorest countries, sits on the geologically active Pacific Ring of Fire and is still recovering from a 7.5 quake that hit some 900 km to the west in February, killing at least 100 people.

The quake and emergency warning came on the same day as a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the south of the Kuril islands in Russia, and weeks after a devastating magnitude 7.5 earthquake and ensuing tsunami in Indonesia.

A tsunami warning was issued briefly in Papua New Guinea after a 7.0 earthquake struck the island nation Wednesday, according to US Geological Survey data, followed by a series of smaller tremors of up to 6.2 magnitude. The tsunami warning has been subsequently cancelled, according to a report by Channel News Asia.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which happened at 7 a.m. local time (21:00 GMT) Wednesday, was located some 200 kilometers southwest of the town of Rabaul.

According to the constable, there was no immediate damage in the town, but the police had yet to contact other villages located closer to the quake's epicenter.

The quake was initially recorded with a magnitude of 7.3 but was subsequently downgraded to 7.0.

Hazardous tsunamis were forecast for some coasts, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said, according to an AFP report.

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded near the Kuril Islands on October 9, the Sakhalin branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences geophysical service reported.

At 6:45 p.m. local time, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake occurred with an epicenter 146 kilometers east of the island of Onekotan. The epicenter depth is 56 kilometers," the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station representative said.

The weekend earthquake which battered Haiti killed 17 people, authorities said on Tuesday, and damaged or destroyed nearly 2,500 houses, sparking fears that many buildings are in a precarious state in the impoverished Caribbean country.

The shallow, magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck northern Haiti on Saturday, spreading panic, particularly around Port-de-Paix, a coastal town that absorbed the brunt of the shockwave.

Two more people were confirmed dead on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 17, according to Haiti’s civil protection agency. Another 333 people were injured, it said. Prime Minister Jean Henry Ceant said 2,280 houses were damaged and 168 destroyed.

The quake, centered just off the north coast, was one of the strongest to hit Haiti since a 7.0-magnitude earthquake near Port-au-Prince killed tens of thousands of people in 2010.

Over ten aftershocks registered around Kuril Islands after morning earthquake

The strongest of them have a magnitude ranging from 3.5 to 5.7

Recurrent seismic tremors were registered in the Kuril Islands area on Thursday after a powerful earthquake that occurred in the morning. The magnitude of more than ten most powerful aftershocks ranged from 3.5 to 5.7, a source at the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station informed TASS.

"Strong aftershocks of the earthquake, which rocked the Kuril Islands area in the morning, are still felt. A series of weaker earthquakes continues there. These are the aftershocks of the tremors that occurred in the morning. The strongest of them have a magnitude ranging from 3.5 to 5.7, there are over ten of them," the source said.

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake was registered in the Pacific Ocean earlier in the day. Residents of the city of Severo-Kurilsk - the closest populated area to the epicenter - felt the aftershocks of 4.0 magnitude, while Kamchatka residents reported aftershocks of 2.0 magnitude.

No damage has been reported.
 
I found this sorta cool guy on youtube who goes by dutchsinse. You can find him on twitch and youtube. He has been reporting on earthquake predictions for quite awhile and somehow I just found him (well technically a few months ago). Anyway, his stuff is really solid ... amazingly so. My only problem is that he is still kinda bound by a paradoxical christian mentality of the sort you find in the midwest US. The kind that try and follow a watered down form of mosaic law. It's weird because on one hand he is trying to spread real information, yet he feels he should acquiece to the scientific authority. He is presently struggling with STS forces and it shows in a lot of his more recent podcasts. That is interesting in its own right.

Regardless, I do recommend you check him out on youtube or twitch for what he has been doing for years in regard to earthquakes. All verifiable and well done. Look at it this way he has to be doing something right to irritate the USGS and others so much. His actual web page is at Dutchsinse
 
Powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake hits off Kuril Islands

There were no immediate reports about casualties or destruction

A strong 6.7 magnitude earthquake was registered in the Pacific Ocean off the Kuril Islands, US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The earthquake's epicenter lay at a depth of 467 kilometers. The tremors were registered 234 kilometers northwest of the village of Ozernovsky (inhabited by 1,500 people).

There were no immediate reports about casualties or destruction. No tsunami alert has been issued so far.

The Sakhalin-based seismic station told TASS that the earthquake struck 269 kilometers away from the city of Severokurilsk on Saturday evening.

"The 6.4 magnitude earthquake occurred 269 kilometers northwest of the city of Severokurilsk at 22.10 local time (11.10 UTC) at a depth of 509 kilometers," the spokesperson said.

According to him, tremors were felt in residential areas.
 
A strong 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Guatemala's southern Escuintla department on Friday in the wake of the eruption of the Fuego volcano that began earlier in the day, the national disaster agency CONRED said.

The second quake was registered 163 km (100 miles) east of Tadine in the Loyalty Islands at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), the USGS said.

The Southwest Indian Ridge is a seismic active zone located along the border between the African Plate and the Antarctic Plate.

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit 104 km (65 miles) off Taiwan's coastal city of Hualien on Tuesday, Reuters reported, citing the country's weather bureau and the US Geological Survey.

According to Reuters, there were no immediate data on damage or casualties from the earthquake.

A strong quake of magnitude 6.8 struck off Greece early on Friday (Oct 26), the US Geological Survey said, with local media reporting damage caused by landslides and electricity outages.

The epicentre of the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.0, was in the Ionian Sea, some 133.5km south-west of Patras in the Peloponnese.

The quake was fairly shallow, only 16.5km below the seabed, which would have amplified shaking. It struck at 1.54am (6.54am Singapore time) and was followed about half an hour later by a 5.2 aftershock.

The tremor was felt in Greece’s capital, Athens, and as far away as Italy. The Athens earthquake observatory said the tremor was felt strongly in Zante, a popular holiday destination with its own international airport.

“It was strong, things fell of the shelves,” a witness in Katastari, Greece, 36km north of the epicentre, wrote on the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) website.

Soon after the quake there were only 3 postings on the EMSC testimonials page, which is unusual for a quake of such magnitude.

Attention was focused on the island of Zakynthos, where reports indicated power was out. Local news websites reported that a 15th century monastery in the Strofades area of the island had been damaged.

Firefighters in Sicily, Calabria and Puglia received thousands of telephone calls for information about the quake.

Greece’s Geodynamic Institute reported a tremor of 6.4, 50km south of Zakynthos. An official there confirmed a tsunami alert had been issued, which is standard for tremors over 5.5.

Greece straddles two tectonic plates and often gets earthquakes.
