6.8-Magnitude Earthquake Registered in Arctic Ocean - US Geological Survey

A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded on Friday in the Arctic Ocean, some 717 kilometers (445 miles) to the northeast of Iceland, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The earthquake was registered at 01:49 GMT, some 119 kilometers (74 miles) to the northwest of Olonkin City, located on the Norwegian island of Jan Mayen in the Arctic Ocean. The island has no permanent population and Iceland was the nearest inhabited zone to the earthquake epicenter.

According to the USGS, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at the depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).

No tsunami alert has been issued after the quake.

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the northeast coast of the South Pacific island nation of Tonga on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake struck 185 km (115 miles) east northeast of the capital, Nuku’alofa, at a depth of 80.5 km (50 miles).

Tonga, a Polynesian archipelago comprising 169 islands, is regularly hit by quakes, part of the geologically active Pacific Ring of Fire.

An earthquake of 6.5 magnitude was registered off the Kamchatka Peninsula on Thursday. Tremors were felt in four settlements in the Russian Far Eastern Kamchatka Region. The strongest tremors of 6 magnitude were felt in the settlement of Ust-Kamchatsk with a population of around 4,000 people, a representative of the local branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Geophysical Service told TASS.

"The earthquake struck at 9:21am local time [0:21am Moscow time]. Its magnitude stood at 6.5. Residents of Ust-Kamchatsk felt it the most with 6 magnitude. Residents of Kozyrevsk and Klyuchi felt tremors of 3 magnitude. In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, tremors of 2 magnitude were registered," the spokesman said.

The earthquake's epicenter lay to the south of Ust-Kamchatsk, in 78 and 36 kilometers from the coastline.

The press service of the regional branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry said that no injuries or damages have been reported.

A strong magnitude 6.6 earthquake has struck east of Solomon Islands on Friday, the United States Geological Survey reported.

A strong earthquake struck at a depth of 33 km (21 miles) about 161 km (100 miles) east of Kirakira, a provincial capital in the Solomon Islands, the United States Geological Survey said.

There was no immediate reports of damage or casualties as well as there was no immediate tsunami threat.

The earthquakes with magnitude 6.0 up to 6.9 are considered to be strong earthquakes according Richter magnitude scale. Strong earthquakes can cause damage to some well-built structures in populated areas and are usually felt in wider areas with a range up to hundreds of miles/kilometres from the epicentre.

Kirakira the provincial capital of the Makira-Ulawa Province, Solomon Islands. It has a population of approximately 3500 people.

The tremor came just a few months after a series of quakes with magnitudes ranging from 4.7 to 5.3 struck the region, causing damage to Italian cities near the Adriatic Sea.

The province of Ravenna in north-eastern Italy was hit by a 4.6 magnitude earthquake, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported on Sunday. The centre also stated that a similar quake took place in the city of Rimini.

There are currently no reports of dead or injured in the incident. It is not clear if other quakes are to be expected following the initial tremor.

Ravenna is an ancient city on the Adriatic coast, located 80 km (about 50 miles) from Bologna.

Multiple earthquakes hit in the Pacific Ocean off the southern Oregon coast Thursday night and Friday morning, but there's no cause for alarm.

A magnitude-4.5 quake, largest of the five, happened about 9:22 p.m. Thursday. The quake happened about 112 miles from Port Orford, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The other quakes, which happened in the same general area, measured between magnitudes 3.5 and 4.1.
Chris Goldfinger, a professor and earthquake geologist at Oregon State University, said the earthquakes serve as a reminder that we live in a subduction zone but are nothing to worry about.

Earthquakes happen in this area all the time, he said. But he said there's no direct link between these earthquakes and the so-called "big one" -- and if anything, they relieve a bit of internal stress in the Gorda Plate, which covers the area, instead of increasing it.

Magnitude-4 earthquakes are felt by humans and may cause damage, according to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network.
Port Orford is a small city in Curry County on the Oregon coast.

Most people who live in the eastern United States likely don’t worry too much about earthquakes. Most of the shaking that goes on across the country happens on the west coast, running up and down the San Andreas fault zone or in the Cascades of Oregon and Washington. Occasionally, an earthquake will rattle Yellowstone or Oklahoma feels an temblor brought on by waste water being pumped into the ground. But New York City? Boston? Charlotte? Washington DC? This is a tricky question to tackle because how rare large earthquakes tend to be in eastern North America. Trying to extrapolate how often earthquakes larger than magnitude 6 could occur typically involves examining the historical catalog. For parts of eastern North America, that might get us back 400 years. However, it really isn’t until the last 100 years that we have a good record of earthquakes that have been measured using seismometers. This means much of our knowledge of earthquakes on the east coast comes from historical records of large, noticeable events in places where people noticed them.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 shook southern Alaska on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake was at a depth of 90 miles (145 km) and the epicenter was around 228 km (141 miles) southwest of Anchorage, it said.

Social media accounts of Anchorage residents said the quake was felt in the city, but there no immediate reports of damage.
