Earlier, the last quake of equal or greater strength near the present epicenter had been a magnitude 5.4 earthquake on Tuesday, Sep 5, 1989 However the strongest-ever (since 1900) recorded quake in this area measured magnitude 6.4. It occurred 82 years ago.
