According to preliminary estimates from the US Geological Survey, the quake might have been felt by over 1.2 million people across 2 countries: Argentina (1.2 million) and Chile (2,950). For most people (79.5%), the quake might only have felt as barely noticeable or weak shaking if at all. No aftershocks have been recorded so far. The earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of Argentina in over 23 years.

We are ending the observation period December 15-24 with the following significant earthquakes

● Earthquake Forecast Updated December 25 at 23:26 UTC

A convergence of critical planetary and lunar geometry involving Jupiter and Saturn can result in a major to great seismic event around 27 December. SSGEOS
A critical and unique convergence of planetary and lunar geometry on 25 December can result in a major seismic event in the next few days. This geometry involves a right angle (90°) of Earth with Jupiter and Saturn, while the Moon also makes semi-right angles (135°) with both planets. SSGEOS via Telegram

SSGEOS forecasts a 70% probability of a significant earthquake that could reach magnitude 8.4 in the worst case scenario.

It is a sparsely populated island, with only 410 people according to USGS data. No aftershocks have been recorded so far but some responses are to be expected towards the Japan, Philippines and Taiwan regions, as well as Alaska.

According to Volcanodiscovery data the earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of Russia in over 12 years.
Is it just me, or have there been a somewhat higher number of quakes in the past two weeks?

It is estimated that an average of two M6+ earthquakes occur every two days, however, in the first week of December there were five M6+ earthquakes, in the third week there was an M7+ and clusters of M5+ earthquakes, as has been proven, these clusters indicate the possibility of a major event.

According to Volcanodiscovery data in November 2024 occurred 11297 earthquakes:

Summary: 5 quakes 6.0+, 117 quakes 5.0+, 1103 quakes 4.0+, 3304 quakes 3.0+, 6768 quakes 2.0+ (11297 total)

Magnitude 2+: 6768 earthquakes
No quakes of magnitude 7 or higher

The strongest earthquake in November occurred in Cuba with Magnitude 6.8

There are still no official data for December 2024, but it appears that seismic activity is on average or slightly higher compared to November

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a M5.0 earthquake in Ethiopia. According to information from Volcanodiscovery this earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of Ethiopia in over 32 years.

The earthquake occurred in the East African Rift System (EARS), the rift that is believed to divide the African plate into two parts: the Somali and the Nubian. It is a 5,000-kilometer rift and it is estimated that a new ocean could form within 5 to 10 million years.
Ethiopia has very few earthquakes and most of them are very small (below magnitude 3). Larger quakes with magnitudes above 3 might occur from time to time. However, Ethiopia has had at least 30 quakes above magnitude 6 since 1900, which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently, probably on average approximately every 1 to 5 years.
