According to preliminary estimates from the US Geological Survey, the quake might have been felt by over 1.2 million people across 2 countries: Argentina (1.2 million) and Chile (2,950). For most people (79.5%), the quake might only have felt as barely noticeable or weak shaking if at all. No aftershocks have been recorded so far. The earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of Argentina in over 23 years.

It is a sparsely populated island, with only 410 people according to USGS data. No aftershocks have been recorded so far but some responses are to be expected towards the Japan, Philippines and Taiwan regions, as well as Alaska.

According to Volcanodiscovery data the earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of Russia in over 12 years.

It is estimated that an average of two M6+ earthquakes occur every two days, however, in the first week of December there were five M6+ earthquakes, in the third week there was an M7+ and clusters of M5+ earthquakes, as has been proven, these clusters indicate the possibility of a major event.

As expected the energy from the M6.7 quake in the Kuril Islands moved toward Japan and the Philippines, while the energy from the M5.9 quake on the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge moved south with three quakes so far on the southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a M5.0 earthquake in Ethiopia. According to information from Volcanodiscovery this earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of Ethiopia in over 32 years.

The earthquake occurred in the East African Rift System (EARS), the rift that is believed to divide the African plate into two parts: the Somali and the Nubian. It is a 5,000-kilometer rift and it is estimated that a new ocean could form within 5 to 10 million years.​

Ethiopia has very few earthquakes and most of them are very small (below magnitude 3). Larger quakes with magnitudes above 3 might occur from time to time. However, Ethiopia has had at least 30 quakes above magnitude 6 since 1900, which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently, probably on average approximately every 1 to 5 years. Strong earthquakes near Fentale volcano spark eruption concerns, Ethiopia​

A series of shallow earthquakes were recorded in recent days near the Fentale volcano in Ethiopia’s Main Ethiopian Rift region, raising concerns about a potential volcanic eruption. The last eruption at this volcano took place in 1820.

“Over the past few days, seismic activity in the Awash area has picked up significantly. The real number of quakes is unknown as there is no seismic network (or at least no publicly available) covering the area and only the largest events can be identified on global networks,” volcanologist Tom Pfeiffer of VolcanoDiscovery noted.

“The risk of a new volcanic eruption in this part of the African Rift is now higher than before, because the most likely cause of the quakes is a (shallow) magma intrusion, which in turn can easily break the surface and produce an eruption,” Dr. Pfeiffer said, urging people in the area to be on alert.

Residents in nearby towns reported tremors throughout the night indicating the likelihood of numerous smaller quakes undetectable by global seismic networks.
