Earthquakes around the world

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 29_2025

Only the Indonesian agency BMKG recorded the M6.0 quake, other agencies such as the German agency GFZ said M5.9 while USGS and GeoAU recorded the quake as M5.5 This is a common occurrence with BMKG.

Seismic activity in recent days has remained low to moderate. Most of the larger earthquakes were recorded in the M5.0 to M5.7 range, mainly in Southeast Asia. On January 28th the Italian agency INGV recorded the following earthquakes
● Mag 6.1 South Pacific Ocean, 227 km northeast of Raoul Island, New Zealand
● Mag 5.9 West Chile Rise
● Mag 5.9 South Pacific Ocean, Gisborne, 230 km east of Raoul Island, New Zealand

However, no other agency around the world detected them, so it is possible that they are not considered to have occurred.

So far and in the last 48 hours the highest magnitude earthquake has been M5.7 and occurred in the Easter Islands, off the coast of Chile.

Semi-right angle geometry with Venus, Mercury and Uranus on the 29th can result in stronger seismic activity, most likely around the 31st. Earth's conjunction with Venus and Neptune on the 1st can result in a larger tremor… SSGEOS via Telegram

SSGEOS forecasts a 60% chance of a worst-case M6.4 earthquake occurring in the next few days with a 50% chance of exceeding M6.5 with a worst-case scenario of M6.9.

2025-01-26-overview.png

The Mercury, Venus, Uranus planetary alignment will occur on January 30 and as has been observed on other occasions, this configuration may generate significant events. The occurrence of seismic clusters prior to or during the alignment will give us an indication.

On the other hand, Frank Hoogerbeets considers that the Earth, Venus, Neptune planetary geometry, that will occur on February 1st, may be even more critical and could generate an M7.0 earthquake in the worst case scenario, around February 3rd.

Let's wait and see

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT FEBRUARY 02_2025

So far, after the planetary geometry Mercury, Venus, Uranus there have been two significant events M5.8 in Indonesia and M5.5 in Ecuador as well as a seismic cluster:

February 01

● M5.1 Napo, 82 km southeast of Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador USGS
● M5.1 South Pacific Ocean, 395 km southeast of Mare Island, New Caledonia USGS
● M5.0 Solomon Sea, 56 km west of Mbanika Island, Solomon Islands USGS
● M5.0 South Pacific Ocean, 322 km southwest of Nukalofa, Tongatapu, Tonga USGS

SSGEOS updated the forecast (updated 1 February 2025, 20:22 UTC)
Earth is in a conjunction with Venus and Neptune, whereby the Moon conjuncts both planets at the same time. This can result in stronger seismic activity, potentially peaking higher 6 to 7 magnitude around 3-4 February.

According to the forecast there is an 80% probability that an M5+ earthquake and in the worst case M6.4 could occur, while for higher earthquakes and up to magnitude 6.9 in the worst case the probability is 70%.

SSGEOS comments via Telegram.
An earthquake swarm is ongoing at the Dodecanese Islands, Greece. More than 70 tremors with magnitude 3 and larger occurred in the last few days. Strongest shake so far measured M 4.8 this morning. In 1956 a M 7.5 earthquake occurred at the island Thira (Santorini).

(It should be clarified that according to SSGEOS concepts, a swarm occurs in the same area while a cluster occurs in different parts of the globe or regions)

News 2/2/25: "Greece is bracing for a major earthquake near the volcano on Santorini. A large number of 3-4 magnitude earthquakes have taken place near the island over the past 48 hours. Seismologists say there is low probability of a volcanic event but are very worried about a 6+ magnitude earthquake and potential tsunami. Schools are closed and large gatherings in enclosed spaces are cancelled."

A total of 270 earthquakes recorded just in the past 48 hours, almost one every ten minutes. The worrisome is that it seems there is increasing magnitude. Only this morning, there were two of the strongest ones monitored so far in this sequence (a 4.8M and 4.9M). The Geophysics Department of the University of Athens (Greece) is also observing activity in the Santorini's volcano, and are measuring a rise in the inner magma levels.

_University of Athens - Earthquakes of the last 2 days in Greece

While Greece is no stranger to earthquakes and seismic activity, it is certainly interesting to notice the timing, as these days Greece is also "shaken" by some of the largest anti-government protests anyone can remember. The occasion is the passing of 2 years after the horrific train disaster at Tempi, a head-on collision between a freight train that was carrying illegal flammable/explosive cargo and a passenger train that killed at least 57 people and hurt many more. Some passengers were never found, probably having been totally incinerated.

The current Greek government has done anything possible to cover up investigations and justice for the last two years. So a tragic train collision also revealed a case of amazing corruption at all levels, in officials, public sector and institutions. Against all odds, the relatives of the unfortunate victims are doing their own investigations and keep uncovering new and amazingly damning information that can no longer be refuted. It feels like something "clicked", people here in Greece really had it this time. There is a huge outrage against the systemic political hubris that led to this tragedy, and there is a lot of "energy" from the people that seems to interestingly coincide with this seismic activity.

I've been keeping an eye on it and there seem to be a lot of contradictory reports. There are the ones who fear a bigger earthquake and tsunami, similar to the ones causing devastation and loss of lives in 1956, and/or, a volcanic eruption. And there are others who warn against panicking, nothing devastating will happen, they believe the earthquakes are tectonic, not volcanic. (Others = experts, seismologists, volcanologists). The latest report I read (translation from Gr)

the Director of Research of the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, Thanasis Ganas, spoke about the two possibilities of the seismic sequence in the region, saying that either the earthquakes will remain at these levels or there will be a new larger tremor that will cause a tsunami and volcanic eruption.

"Either we will have a cluster, meaning magnitudes that will be in the range of 4.5 to 4.7 at the most or we will have a larger seismic tremor which may cause a tsunami and some volcanic eruption. So we are preparing for these scenarios."

which sounds sensible, but I still think there should be evacuations.

In any event, rescue teams are gathered on the island and rescue plans are being drawn. Today people have also been sharing videos of landslides caused by the multiple earthquakes, see here (link in Greek).

That is certainly an interesting "coincidence".

Seismic activity of significant magnitude in Ethiopia has decreased considerably. The last earthquake greater than M4 occurred yesterday February 02 at 01:35 UTC (M4.3)

According to Reliefweb latest update (January 31)

Afar and Oromia, 90,000 people are at risk, and approximately 85,000 people are being evacuated – 30,000 in Oromia and 55,000 in Afar. UN and NGO partners are supporting the government-led response by providing food, safe water, health and nutrition services, emergency shelter, and essential items. Efforts are also underway to resume education for affected children.

In the past 30 days, Ethiopia has had 96 quakes of magnitudes above 4 and up to 5.3:

5 quakes above magnitude 5
91 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5

Indeed. As usual, I would dare say, there is no consensus among experts like seismologists. Some lean towards being comforting and reassuring, and some towards being more preemptive by sounding an early alarm. There are also plenty of conflicting motivations here, with Greece having its own competing "schools" of seismologists, and a government that the last thing it would wish for is yet another mismanaged disaster. But objectively, it seems there is a noticeable climax to the phenomenon.

As I read the news myself and mentioned in your link, the main seismic fault that is the source of these earthquakes is located at a distance of 8Km North/East of Santorini, close and under a small uninhabited island named Anydros. This fault is connected to the active underwater volcano known as Kolumbo. Kolumbo has its base at a depth of 505m and an underwater height of 400m. Its latest major eruption was in the year 1650, when it was reaching the sea's surface. It collapsed on its caldera, creating a sea-traveling pyroclastic flow and a tsunami that caused damages to other islands up to 150Km away.

Latest news has it that today local fishermen visited the island Anydros under calm sea, and said they found the island's visible waterline on the rocks, looking like it has been raised from the sea by some distance (and as if the island itself was raised), which was considered as "a worrying sign".

Greece’s island of Santorini rattled by 200 earthquakes

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has appealed for calm as hundreds of rolling earthquakes have left the residents of Santorini island, and its neighbours in the Aegean Sea, rattled.

Thousands of locals and holidaymakers have crowded onto ferries and flights to leave Santorini and the neighbouring islands of Anafi, Ios and Amorgos, amid fears the tremors, which have so far caused minimal damage and no injuries, could indicate a larger earthquake is coming.

The picturesque crescent-shaped Santorini island is home to a dormant volcano, but an expert committee set up to monitor the situation said an estimated 200 quakes of magnitude 3 or more had been registered, but stressed the phenomenon was “not linked to volcanic activity”.

Prominent Greek seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos cautioned that the current earthquake sequence – displayed on live seismic maps as a growing cluster of dots between the islands of Santorini, Ios, Amorgos, and Anafi – could indicate a larger impending event.

Laura asked on December 2024
Is it just me, or have there been a somewhat higher number of quakes in the past two weeks?

So it was. Besides the fact that the first two weeks of December were very active with earthquakes M6+ and M7 the month of December was much busier than November. According to Volcanodiscovery data:

December 2024
Summary: 2 quakes 7.0+, 9 quakes 6.0+, 144 quakes 5.0+, 1168 quakes 4.0+, 3628 quakes 3.0+, 8996 quakes 2.0+ (13947 total) Volcanodiscovery

November 2024
Summary: 5 quakes 6.0+, 117 quakes 5.0+, 1103 quakes 4.0+, 3304 quakes 3.0+, 6768 quakes 2.0+ (11297 total)
Volcanodiscovery

However, compared to other years 2024 was less active.
Seismic activity during the year 2024 was much lower than the rest of the 21st century, with only 99 earthquakes exceeding magnitude six, the lowest since 1982. There were also no earthquakes exceeding ≥M8 for the third year in a row. Wikipedia

Moderate seismic activity continues in Greece, so far only M4+ earthquakes have hit the region of Santorini island (M4.9 the highest magnitude) SSGEOS commented as follows:
The strongest tremor in the ongoing earthquake swarm at the Dodecanese Islands occurred this afternoon [M5.3]. It was reportedly felt by over 90 people in the region. History tells us that the region can experience a magnitude 6 or larger earthquake. But it is not clear if such a threat is imminent. In any case, be on extra alert in the region, just in case. Israel readying for possibility it could face tsunami amid earthquakes in Greece

On Wednesday, the deputy head of the National Security Council convened an urgent discussion on the matter.

Israel needs to begin preparations for the possible impact of a major tsunami, the deputy head of the National Security Council emphasized during a meeting with emergency agencies and multiple government ministries on Wednesday.

Tsunamis have struck Israel in the past, and experts warn they will occur again. While it is impossible to predict when and where the next tsunami will hit or the extent of flooding it may cause, the likelihood increases during periods of heightened seismic activity, such as the recent tremors in Greece.
