I have worked with more of them on my former job, for a few years. I said what I said because of my experience. I have first hand experience in dealing with such types everyday, and I still stand by my conclusion - they are mostly stupid, or at least less intelligent then most of the normal souled beings, precisely because they lack empathy. They are insensitive to subtle signs of different behaviors of people around them, they just keep drumming their drum. And, they can be spun easily every way I want, BUT, only once I figured out what they were and how to control them.
Yes, they tend to keep up appearances quite well even in unexpected situations, but their fear of losing control starts to leech out in subtle ways, like repeating certain words - "uhhm", "em" etc in conversations, starting to grimace much more then usual, playing theatricals, I can smell it almost when it comes to that. They are afraid, and they knew I knew who they are. That was the only thing that could make them really afraid, getting exposed to all of the people around them, because then, their lies would fall down like a house of cards.
If you want to find out what I'm talking about, you need two things - first, a psycho you can study for a longer time, so it has to be from your immediate surroundings, like job, neighbor, etc, and second - you have to know enough about them, and be strong enough not to be destroyed by their little ploys and petty games they play. You need to stay above that, to spin the game against them. It can be done. Everyone has weak spots, so do they. They are, indeed, petty tyrants, when you figure them out. I will not step down to that condescending tone of yours in your last sentence (if I read it right, maybe I'm wrong here about this) - I will just say, stop being afraid of them. Once you get up close and personal with the beasts, you figure out they are all smoke and mirrors, for the most part. There are a few of them really dangerous, but even those can be had under control with carefull planning of your actions. For every psycho out there, there IS a countermeasure, to size him or her up good.
