Fireball tally from American Meteor Society

Thanks for the update Pashalis. So the charts now show US only sightings, correct? Looks like we have another record year across the board.

Do you know what does the total figure include apart from the ones already specified? It seems that the 2015 drop was coming from that section since the number of fragmentation and sound only sightings kept on rising and the confirmed fireballs only saw a modest decrease back then.

Yep that's the case.

What do you mean exactly, I don't understand? That's the total figure for the US right now (in all departments). Do you mean the total data worldwide? Pierre didn't use that Data in his book, because the US data service from AMS is the most reliable, in regards to showing an actual trend that comes close to reality. The other data from other sytems like the one in japan and germany are far less reliable to draw conclutions from. Pierre is right and that's why I only post the data from the US as well.

I meant to ask for the other components of "All Reports about Sightings".

The chart shows that the drop in "All Reports about Sightings" back in 2015 is larger than the drop seen in "Confirmed fireballs", so I was wondering if the former includes sightings about other phenomena?

Well that could be but I don't think that is the most likely expalnation. They have a pretty good system that can exclude "other sightings" from their system (speaking about the US system here). So overall, the drop in 2015, in both categories correspondingly, can probably explained by something like this:

By the way Pierre: http://sonotaco.jp/doc/SNM/index.html just published their data for 2015 as well. The problem now is, if we update that data until 2015 as well, that te premise that there is a increase in that time frame is probably not there anymore, as originally stated in the book back then for that data. That would then also apply to the footnote to that graph. So what should we do there?

I'm still not sure if the Sonota Data is as objective as the AMS data, because of they way they gather their data compared to the Sonota data...

All other data in those two chapters still fits with your analysis of back then (that there is an overall increase)...

Indeed we still can mention an overall increase. Actually, I would not be surprised if we crossed a first cluster ( roughly 2010-2013) then experienced a temporary slowdown before entering a second cluster. Meteor density is not homogeneous. Maybe that could be added in a footnote.

And the simultanious continuation of the trend in the other categories (sound and fragmentation) without the drop, is certainly interesting and I don't quite know either, what exactly to make out of it. Maybe the fragments got smaller at that time frame, thus more likely to fragment and make sounds? Thus the drop was "covered" in those segments?

Reports Report 971a (Event 971-2010)
http://www.amsmeteors.org/members/imo_view/report/105231
Name Christopher K
Address Wyalusing, WI
Latitude 42° 56' 59.82'' N (42.94995°)
Longitude 91° 8' 20.44'' W (-91.13901°)

Concurrent Sound Yes
Remarks Huge explosion. Louder than any firework or anything I have heard.

Persistent train Yes
Duration 3s
Length 10°
Remarks Could hear it sizzle as it went directly above us. Sounded as though it was possibly dropping rain drop sized fragments in trees around us. Mostly green and very bright.

Terminal flash Yes
Remarks Flash occurred just over hill we were standing next to. Very bright daylight flash.

With daily checks on the AMS site, this is one of the many, consistent reports this observer cites.

Brighter,
Longer lasting,
Sounds, often, (sizzling)
Larger displays of sparks and trains leaving spectators in awe.
Multiple fragmentation's.
Uncertainty if maybe some fragments (small) may have impacted near the observation.
Lots of level 3 and 4 sighting experience's more common.

Yes agreed, the charts show a labor of love, as the accumulation of the data and the time it takes to deliver is labor intensive.

Thanks P.

Homes in Texas were shaken by a sonic boom this weekend as what appeared to be a gigantic meteor streaked overhead. Dozens of locals reported that the meteor was clearly visible as it barreled through the night sky of west Texas.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6Fy8KEgEVA (0:07 min.)

28.02.2017 - The meteor also created a sonic boom so loud that police and fire departments in Parker County received phone calls from distressed locals who thought there had been an explosion. The American Meteor Society received reports from people in Colorado, Oklahoma, and Kansas as well. The meteor was spotted as far west as Arkansas.

Weatherford police officer Tiffany Vanzant's patrol car dash camera captured the meteor streaking across the sky, looking like a spear of light.

"Officer Vanzant had a front-row seat to a truly spectacular sight, and thanks to her in-car camera and a little movie-making magic, we want to share it with everyone," the Weatherford Police Department said. "It is important to note that there were no space aliens hurt in the making of this video!"

Nathan Fines, a deputy fire marshal, claimed to have heard a crack like thunder when the meteor made its flyby. "You could see a flash, like if an electrical transformer flashes at night, up to our northwest, but it was cloudy here — kinda rainy — so we didn't actually see any kind of fireball or anything," Hines told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

Mike Hankey with the American Meteor Society said that Earth is hit with hundreds of meteors a day but only a tiny fraction have the size necessary to produce a sonic boom. "A lot of people think it's something hitting the ground," he told Lubbock. "Actually, like 10 miles up into the atmosphere creates that sonic effect that's like a rumbling sound or an exploding sound."

The meteor likely made landfall somewhere in Lubbock County, 50-100 miles southeast of the city of Lubbock, according to Hines. "Local residents, just be on the lookout for any weird black rocks," he said, adding that the rocks would be unusually heavy and smooth.

Here is monthly chart of fireball events from AMS database for those who are interested. Confirmed fireball events in the US only. Seems there is slight change in distribution throughout the year, more fireballs in the summer compared to what it used to be.

Massive asteroids in popular meteor shower Taurids pose major threat
The Cosmos News
_https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RL1qKepHlg
Published on Jun 10, 2017
Scientists have discovered a new branch of the Taurids meteor stream that could pose a major risk to Earth, with asteroids up to 1,000 feet wide flying past us every few years.

The Taurids meteor shower peaks every October and November, producing a relatively small display of shooting stars as the planet passes through its stream.

Meteor shower displays happen when tiny bits of cosmic debris enter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up in the sky. Because the Taurids are made up of branches and a core, activity levels increase and decrease depending on how much debris Earth passes through.

This is a fairly recent discovery picked up by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae. It was discovered on 2017 July 19 and appeared to be in outburst at the time. The comet is very diffuse there has been a large scatter in total magnitude estimates however the comet has been brightening slowly. At the beginning of September it was around 9th magnitude and it is expected to brighten to around 8th magnitude in October by which time it will be very well placed in Perseus. It continues to move north and by the end of December will be a 9th magnitude object a few degrees from the pole.
