Fires around the world

Thank you for that video link angelburst29. I don't know if any of that is true or not. He talked about the Bundy ranch and all the land grabbing also being a part of the Clinton foundation. He is right about it being odd that they are not letting anyone back in and the national guard presence. 100,000 people lost their homes. To even think that it was done on purpose is truly horrific. I just can not believe that anyone would be crazy enough to be that obvious.

It is sad that none of that help is being taken up on. :headbash:

I haven't come across any updates on the Fort McMurray blaze and wild fire and wonder what has happened to all the residents that were forced out and evacuated? Is the fire still burning?

I did come across an interesting bit of information in an unrelated article:

"Canada wants to replace Russia as a source of energy for Europe, but its tar oil is extremely dirty. Its extraction needs a lot of water with chemicals and there are now huge toxic lakes in Canada, while the boreal forests are burning because all the water has been drained from underneath them. If you want more energy like that, you will have more and more of a climate catastrophe," Maude Barlow, the Council of Canadians chairperson said.

CETA: Canada as a Trojan Horse of US Corporations in Europe
http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160517/1039767101/eu-canada-ceta-deal.html

While people across Europe are fighting tooth and nail against the TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership), which would make them - and their governments - defenseless against the greed of global, mostly US corporations, a much more toxic deal has been quietly negotiated between the European Commission and Canada.

CETA which stands for the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement is a dry run for TTIP.

It represents a 'new generation' of trade treaties on behalf of big business (TISA, TPP) that are set to undermine democracy and destroy basic rights of workers and consumers.

Negotiations on CETA started back in 2009, and concluded with a ceremony in Ottawa in September 2014. A number of EU governments were unhappy with the final text agreed by the negotiators, but it was rushed through regardless. No MPs or MEPs were allowed to take part in the talks, which were conducted in secret, and no one was given access to the text of the agreement until it was too late. Key elements of Europe's public services have been bargained away without a shred of public debate, says War on Want, who is coordinating the collection of signatures of Europeans against CETA in the UK.

[...] CETA, like TTIP and other such "new" deals, includes the infamous Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) mechanism, which allows companies to sue governments over any new law or policy that might reduce their profits in the future.

In a public consultation held in Europe, over 97 percent of respondents rejected the introduction of these new powers for business. Yet the EU has gone ahead with it anyway, and CETA will introduce ISDS not only for Canadian companies but also for any US firms with offices in Canada (and that's about 85 percent of all US companies).

Official statistics show that 60 percent of all lawsuits against governments have been won by corporations. In one of the latest examples, Slovakia, not a rich country by any standard, lost 29.5 million Euros to a Dutch health insurance company that challenged the nationalization of Slovakia's health system — an election promise by the national government. And in Canada, a fracking company is suing the government for 250 million for a ban on fracking even though it has not done any fracking yet. This has become possible because the ISDS system allows investors to sue governments for "lost future" profit.

[...] In Canada, tar sands oil producers, having been hit with a ban by the Obama administration on imports of their highly toxic substance, are now looking forward to sending it to Europe once CETA is done and dusted. (Article continues.)

Area of wildfires in Siberia exceeds 20,000 hectares for the first time this year

http://tass.ru/en/society/876373

A total of 889 people and 145 units of equipment are extinguishing fire, along with Russian Emergencies Ministry’s aircraft

CHITA, May 18. /TASS/. The area of wildfires in Russia’s Zabaikalsky Krai continues to grow and has exceeded 20,000 hectares for the first time this year.

"A total of 31 wildfires is blazing in Zabaikalsky Krai on an area of 22,500 hectares, including 20,700 hectares of forests. Eleven wildfires were localized on an area of 4,800 hectares. Fire areas are registered in 13 regions," State Forestry Service said on Wednesday.

A total of 889 people and 145 units of equipment are extinguishing fire, along with Russian Emergencies Ministry’s aircraft, including Be-200ChS and Il-76. Three Mi-8 helicopter, one Mi-2 helicopter and three An-2 aircraft also help in firefighting.

It was earlier reported that the state of emergency was declared in Zabailaksky Krai due to dry windy weather and high temperatures.

Smoke From Canadian Wildfires Drifts Over NYC, Tri-State
http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Smoke-From-Canadian-Wildfired-Drifts-Over-NYC-Tri-State-NY-380289301.html

Notice a smoky look in the sky?

On a day when Storm Team 4 called for clear skies over the tri-state, smoke from wildfires raging in Canada wafted over the region, putting a filter on the sunshine.

It's because the wind trajectory recently has been from the northeast, an ideal track to push the smoke hundreds of miles to the southeast.

According to Canada's government agency that tracks wildfires, nine fires are 2,471 acres or greater in size in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario.

The smoke is thousands of feet up in the atmosphere, so the risk of health impacts is very low.

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Smoke from the expanding wildfires in the central Canadian plains is once again drifting over Upstate New York.

Smoke from expanding Canadian wildfires floats over Upstate NY again
http://www.syracuse.com/weather/index.ssf/2016/05/smoke_from_expanding_canadian_wildfires_floats_over_upstate_ny_again.html

Satellite images captured images of a belt of smoke moving through Upstate New York from northwest to southeast. The haze is visible in the sky near Syracuse.

The wildfires forced the evacuation of all 88,000 residents of Fort McMurray, a city in Alberta, and have now spread to nearly 2,000 square miles.

The wildfires have been fueled by abnormally dry, hot weather in the central plains of Alberta. That weather is the flip side of the cool April and May we've been having in Upstate New York: A stubborn jet stream pattern is keeping warmer air locked up in western and central Canada while cool eastern Canadian air flows toward New York.

Over 20 cm of snow kicks off the long weekend in Alberta
http://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/articles/over-20-cm-of-snow-kicks-off-the-long-weekend-in-alberta/68054

Friday, May 20, 2016, 12:04 PM - Call it bad timing? As the May long weekend kicks off across the country, parts of the precipitation starved province of Alberta are seeing a hefty shot of snow.

"Heavy snow mixed with rain will begin to taper off early this afternoon," says Environment Canada in a snowfall warning issued for parts of northwestern Ontario. "A further 5 to 10 cm is possible."

Drivers are being warned to adjust travel plans based on the changing road conditions as rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations.

"Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow," EC warns.

Up to 25 cm of snow is possible in the hardest hit places through Friday.

Even though desperate for precipitation, residents say they weren't quite prepared for this wintry blast.

"After weeks of warm dry weather, just before the May Long weekend, we get a covering of the white stuff," says Weather Network viewer Chris Rhoads from Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Heavy rain and thunderstorm threat

For areas further south, a slow moving system is bringing widespread beneficial rain and cooler temperatures through the long weekend. A thunderstorm threat also covers the region with the potential for isolated severe storms.

"A storm or two may reach marginal severe criteria," says Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton. "Hail, winds, and heavy rain are possible."

Between 60-80 mm of rain is forecast for major cities like Calgary and Edmonton through Monday, with the risk for locally higher amounts.

Unfortunately, Fort McMurray misses out on this critical rain once again and will see about 10-15 mm with this system. Lighter winds and cooler temperatures over the weekend however, will be an asset.

A huge explosion inside a petrochemical facility in southern Mexico kills at least three people, with more than 100 others injured, and sends a toxin-filled cloud into the air.

The incident occurred after 3 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Wednesday in the Pemex oil company, which is located in the industrial port city of Coatzacoalcos.

According to the local governor, the blast claimed three lives and left 105 people hospitalized, including 58 Pemex workers.

The explosion was heard as far as six miles (10 kilometers) away, forcing evacuation of more than 2,000 people from the area as a precaution.

Nearby schools and businesses have also been suspended, reports said. The cause of the explosion is yet to be clarified.

Residents have been warned to keep away from the site due to what is called a “dissipating cloud of toxic fumes.”

The plant reportedly produces vinyl chloride, a hazardous industrial chemical that is used to make PVC pipes and for other purposes.

Several explosions have been reported at Pemex facilities in recent years. In early February, an explosion at the facility killed three workers and injured seven others.

Providing one-fifth of the Mexican government’s revenue, Pemex produces vinyl chloride, a hazardous industrial chemical that is used to make PVC pipes and packaging materials.

California: Wheatland Fire near Lake View Terrace
http://wildfiretoday.com/2016/05/23/48087/
May 23, 2016
A brush fire that has blackened about 183 acres put up an impressive amount of smoke today. The fire broke out in mid-afternoon on Monday and by evening had slowed considerably. Fire officials called it 35 percent contained at 6 p.m.

MapWheatlandFire-900x565.jpg

The Wheatland Fire is north of the 210 freeway in the Lake View Terrace area above Wheatland Avenue in southern California. It burned north away from homes until its progress was impeded by a deepening marine layer and by ridgelines, making it feasible for aircraft to drop water and retardant in those areas, assisting firefighters on the ground and slowing the fire.
