SANTIAGO:
A forest fire swept through central Chile over the weekend, forcing the evacuation of 6,000 people and destroying more than a dozen dwellings, emergency officials said Monday.

The blaze began in forested areas of Vina del Mar, a popular resort area in the Valparaiso region, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) west of Santiago, where hundreds of poor families live in illegally-built houses of wood and tin.

According to Ricardo Toro, the director of ONEMI, no one was killed or injured in the blaze.

The cities of Valparaiso and Vina del Mar were put on alert as the fire tore through 230 hectares (570 acres) in just a few hours, amid strong winds and soaring temperatures.
Police and army personnel helped people carry their personal belongings in vehicles, while firefighters and forest brigades fought the flames to keep them from reaching camps.

Authorities said additional brigades and helicopters will be sent Monday to continue fighting the fire.

Regional authorities meanwhile suspended Monday classes in the city of Vina del Mar, where 10 families who lost their homes were being housed in shelters.

Officials announced an investigation to determine the cause of the blaze.

Earlier this year, forest fires ravaged southern Chile, killing 11 people and destroying large swaths of land.

Fires are common in Chile´s parched forests during the southern hemisphere´s summer. Most are caused by human activity.

Fire activity this year was worse than usual because of a drought attributed by environmentalists to climate change.

I have a bad feeling about this:
I live near Canberra which is several hundred km from the area mentioned in this news bulletin.

The wind is howling, and it's hot. Projected temperature here is 34 degrees C.
The sky is covered in smoke, and yet the local fire web pages show only hazard reduction burns happening locally. Anyone doing a hazard reduction in these conditions needs their head read.

The last time I remember this kind of a day was in 2003 when the Canberra area suffered a major fire outbreak resulting in 500 homes being lost.

"A strong wind change, from south-easterly to westerly, may make the blazes spread and put more lives, homes and farms at risk. It’s feared wind changes will make several fires converge into a monster blaze."

Well it looks like everything has settled down somewhat, as the winds have died down and the 'smoke' has all blown out to sea. It turns out it was dust blown off the farmlands which are currently under drought conditions. Such a lot of topsoil blown into the sky! And the latest fires are reported here: https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fires-near-me

Glad to hear it’s settled down MusicMan. It’s been a shocker in Sydney. Spent most of the day near the air conditioner, I don’t know what I’d do without that modern invention. Where I live the temperature went up to 38.5 C at 4.00pm

I'm glad it settled down too, MusicMan! This article you posted mentioned there was (or still is?) a fire near your area: "“If you plan to leave, or you are not prepared, leave early.” A similar alert is in place for a fire near Goulburn, northeast of Canberra. The fire is burning in the area around Tarlo River Road, Carters Close, Towrang Road and Narelle Lane in Greenwich Park. Firefighters are gaining the upper hand and conditions are easing, but those in the area are being advised to have a plan ready in case the blaze does impact their property."

Australian wildfires destroy homes, kill cattle as hundreds of people flee Monday 19 March 2018
http://www.arabnews.com/node/1268961/world

Australian authorities urged people to remain alert on Monday as wildfires that have destroyed homes, killed cattle and forced hundreds of residents to flee continued to burn out of control in the southeast of the country.

No deaths or serious injuries were reported as of Monday morning, but the bushfires have caused extensive damage in rural Victoria and New South Wales states.

The fires, believed to have been sparked by lightning on Saturday, were fanned by dry, hot winds as temperatures reached 41 C (106 F) throughout Sunday.

Emergency officials said conditions should ease on Monday but “watch and act” warnings remained in place for five locations.

Up to 35 homes and a school were destroyed in the small coastal town of Tathra in New South Wales, authorities said, where people fled to the beach to avoid the flames. Evacuation centers have been set up and several schools in affected areas were closed on Monday.

About 280 firefighters were battling the blazes while 22,000 homes were without power in the region after the high winds brought down trees, Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said late on Sunday.

In the northern city of Darwin, about 25,000 homes were also without power after a tropical cyclone felled trees. No deaths were reported.

Bushfires are a common and deadly threat in Australia’s hot, dry summers, fueled by highly flammable eucalyptus trees.

In January, hundreds of holidaymakers had to be evacuated by boat from the beaches of the Royal National Park south of Sydney, when they became trapped by bushfires.

The 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria killed 173 people and injured more than 400.

Thirteen people were killed and several injured when a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Vietnam's southern commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City early yesterday.

The fire in the high-rise Carina Plaza started around midnight on the lower floors of the building and soon spread to the upper floors.

An official told Agence France-Presse that many of the victims died of suffocation as they tried to flee the fire by running to the higher floors. "Thirteen people were pulled out dead and more than a dozen others injured. They died from suffocation," said the official from the neighbourhood's government office.

She added that officials had not yet determined the cause of the fire.

Photos on social media show residents being rescued from balconies and plumes of black smoke rising from the tall building.

The fire was put out by dawn, though the area was shrouded in thick smoke for several hours, images on state-run media show.

Ms Le Thi Vang told state-run VNExpress that she and her family were jolted awake by a loud blast in their second-floor apartment, which quickly filled with smoke.

"We ran out and smoke was everywhere. We did not know where to run, so we had to jump down," Ms Vang, 45, told the news site.

According to reports, the blaze may have started in the underground parking garage that connected adjacent blocks of the apartment complex.

The complex includes several buildings between 15 and 22 storeys high and was built six years ago.

This is Vietnam's deadliest fire since 2016 when a blaze in a karaoke bar in Hanoi left 13 people dead, mostly government workers who died in the soundproof chambers. AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

Residents were seen on social media gathered on sidewalks gazing at the blaze that sent bright flames and billows of smoke into the San Francisco skyline.

At least 15 people were displaced due to the inferno, local NBC affiliate KNTV reported.

Though no fatalities or injuries were reported, fire officials said there would be further checks to see if anyone was 'squatting' in the building

Oklahoma wildfires: Hundreds evacuate, 120,000 acres burned, officials say
Last Updated Apr 13, 2018 6:23 PM EDT Video
WOODWARD, Okla. --
Wildfires in northwestern Oklahoma have burned more than 120,000 acres and forced hundreds of people to evacuate their homes. Woodward County Emergency Management Director Matt Lehenbaur said Friday that the fires have destroyed several homes near Woodward, about 125 miles northeast of Oklahoma City.

The Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Friday that a 61-year-old man died Roger Mills County as a result of injuries sustained in the fire.

The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management reports one fire has burned 82,000 acres near the town of Leedey, about 40 miles south of Woodward.

The National Weather Service says dangerous fire weather conditions are expected in much of western Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Panhandle through Saturday, with low humidity and strong winds of 20-30 mph and gusts of up to 50 mph.

CBS News affiliate KOTV reports the Oklahoma Forestry Service says an "historic fire danger" is spanning across most of the state. The public has been advised to avoid outdoor burning and grilling due to high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity. The governor has issued a burn ban for at least 16 counties.

Lehenbaur said the wind has been changing direction, hindering firefighting efforts.

"Every time we have a wind shift, we have a finger of that fire break off and it'll move in a different direction," Lehenbaur said.

"We're looking at a really, really rough day," he said.

Lehenbaur said federal assistance in the form of firefighting personnel and equipment, including aircraft, has been sent to help battle the flames.

A turkey hunter who was reported missing was transported to a burn center in serious condition.

"There were three hunters who were trapped," said Finch-Walker. "Two were rescued, the third man was found [Friday] morning and transported" to a burn center in serious condition.

According to Woodward County Emergency Management officials, four wildfires are burning in the state.

Containment information was not immediately available.

Nicaragua fires: aid from Costa Rica rejected as blaze destroys rainforest
Wed 11 Apr 2018 21.30 BST Snip:
Environmentalists sound alarm after 5,000 hectares consumed in week-long fire but rain offers glimmer of hope

Fires have raged in one of Nicaragua’s most important protected areas of tropical forest for more than a week, but the government has rejected an offer of assistance from neighbouring Costa Rica.

A sudden rain shower on Tuesday offered some hope that the blaze in the Indio Maíz biological reserve on Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast could be contained, but environmentalists in the Central American country have called on the government to appeal for international help after the fires consumed more than 5,000 hectares (12,400 acres) of tropical rainforest.

Jaime Incer Barquero, a prominent Nicaraguan environmentalist, told the newspaper La Prensa that the fire was possibly “the most dramatic ecological disaster ever experienced by Nicaragua” because it had struck such a delicate ecosystem.

Earlier this week, Costa Rica dispatched a team of firefighters – equipped with trucks, pumps and drones – to its northern border with Nicaragua, but they were turned away, the Costa Rica government said in a statement.

‘Hotspots’ Continue to Burn on Maersk Honam

April 13, 2018 by gCaptain
Mediterranean Shipping Company has provided an update to its customers into the situation aboard the ultra-large containership Maersk Honam following the devastating fire broke out aboard the ship more than a month ago in the Arabian Sea.

220x125.jpg

MSC is Maersk’s partner in the 2M alliance.

The Maersk Honam is currently being towed to Jebel Ali, where salvage operations will take place and cargo will be off-loaded.

According to MSC’s update, released Thursday, Maersk Honam’s current position is 22° 46.0’N 063° 11.5’E, approximately halfway between Muscat and Karachi, in the northern Arabian Sea.

The firefighting and cooling operations are ongoing, with various hotspots remaining, MSC said.

“We will only be able to clarify the situation once the cargo has been discharged and inspected but we can now provide to the owners of cargoes that were stored in the holds 1 to 3 some certificate of total loss if requested. MSC is providing you with draft wording of such a certificate in a separate document for your easy reference,” the update said.

“For the other cargoes, insurers should prepare the required GA and Salvage security bonds (when supplied by the General Average Adjusters), as those documents will be essential for the cargoes to reach their final destinations and be released under General Average,” MSC said.

As has been reported previously, the substantial cargo loss has forced Maersk to declare general average. The basic concept of GA is that all losses, including salvage, port, and transfer costs, are shared between surviving cargo.

“As the salvage operations are still ongoing, the General Adjuster is not yet in position to finalise his request for Salvage security bonds, but we will relay them to you as soon as known,” the company added.

The 353-meter Maersk Honam caught fire on March 6 in the Arabian Sea, claiming the lives of five crew members. The vessel reported by Maersk to be carrying a total of 7,860 containers, corresponding to 12,416 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent).

The Singapore-flagged vessel was only recently delivered in 2017 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. It has a nominal capacity of 15,262 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit).

With the Maersk Honam are the tugs Maersk Involver, Posh Perseverance and Amazon Chieftan Z.

An out-of-control bushfire blazing through south-west Sydney is now fast approaching a nuclear reactor in Lucas Heights. Residents in nearby suburbs, Pleasure Point, Sandy Point, Illawong, Menai, Bangor, Barden Ridge and Alfords Point have been told it is 'too late to leave'.
An ember attack is expected to hit residents living north east of the fire, with strong winds expected to push burning embers far past the frontlines of the blaze. A spokesman for the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation said they were not aware of any current threat to the reactor but had taken safety precautions. A fire broke out at the military barracks in Holsworthy on Sunday, which houses ammunition and chemicals. Small spot fires remain, but are under control.

Two wildfires burning in Mount Taylor Ranger District
April 13, 2018 09:34 AM Video / 03:11
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.
Two wildfires have burned roughly 1,000 acres each in the Mount Taylor Ranger District, New Mexico State Forestry officials confirmed Thursday night.

One fire, the Diener Canyon Fire, initially began as a prescribed burn in the Zuni Mountains on Monday in Cibola County. However, it broke out of its containment zone. It's burning about 15 miles west of Grants and Milan and has no containment.
The second fire, dubbed the Bluewater Fire, has prompted pre-evacuation notices for people in Bluewater Acres and Bluewater Village. That fire also has no containment as of Thursday night.

McKinley County Fire Chief Jason Carlisle said the U.S. Forest Service had initially asked for an evacuation plan around 5:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon for Bluewater Acres. That order was rescinded around 6:35 p.m. because, Carlisle said, the fire shifted to the northeast.

However, emergency personnel say residents should still be ready to evacuate if needed.

A Type I incident management team will arrive at a command post on Friday.
In southeast New Mexico, Capitan Police Chief Randy Spear tells KOB a fire that broke out Thursday afternoon has grown to 1,000 acres and is threatening structures. Lincoln County agencies are assisting New Mexico State Forestry in responding to the fire.
State Forestry also reports a 60,000-acre fire burning between Tatum and Milnesand.

The fire in the unfinished building started just weeks after a man died in an apartment fire in New York's Trump Tower.

Construction on the Baku tower started a decade ago but was never opened. It was taken over by U.S. President Donald Trump's company in 2012.

The fire started just a day before the Azerbaijan Formula One Grand Prix with drivers and their entourages already in the city.

Blaze in Harlem high-rise leaves 12 injured — 3 critically
Apr 30, 2018 | 12:28 AM
A blaze tore through a Harlem high-rise Sunday, leaving 12 people injured — three of them critically, including a 6-year-old girl, officials said.

The fire started on the 29th floor of a 35-story building on Fifth Ave. near 110th St. about 6:40 a.m., according to authorities.

Three people were hospitalized in critical condition and three more suffered serious injuries that were not life threatening, the FDNY said.

Six people, including one firefighter, suffered minor injuries. Medics took the victims to local hospitals.

About 80 firefighters rushed to the scene within four minutes of getting the call, said Deputy Chief Michael Gala.

They rescued six people from the smoke-filled apartment, including two children.

The firefighters found the 6-year-old girl in cardiac arrest and a 1-year-old girl in respiratory arrest. The 6-year-old girl's injuries were considered life-threatening.

"Our members quickly forced entry, they found two victims in a hallway in the apartment," said Gala. "They quickly brought them out to the hallway, went back into the apartment, and found four additional victims."

Gala added he "could not be prouder" of the firefighters who pulled the victims out and extinguished the flames in under an hour, despite challenging conditions of high heat and heavy smoke.

"Clearly, zero visibility is a challenge for our members, they're operating in the dark," Gala told reporters at the scene. "But they recovered the victims in a very short period of time."

Some residents said they didn't hear any smoke alarms go off.

Allyson Narek, 30, who lives one floor below where the fire broke out, said a neighbor knocked on her door and told her to leave. If not for that, she wouldn't have known there was a fire.

"I was sort of in this twilight sleep, and I heard a lot of motion upstairs," she said. "Then my roommate started screaming 'fire!'" said Narek. "And that's because someone went around to each apartment door and started screaming 'fire!' No alarms, nothing."

A resident who lives on the sixth floor said he didn't know there was a fire until over an hour later.

"I guess there's no fire alarms," he said. "My friend texted me and said, 'Hey, are you okay?' And I was like, 'Yeah, why?' And he said, 'Your building's on fire.'"

Gala said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

[QUOTE]VICI, Okla. — The hay began arriving before the fires were out. It came stacked on pickup trucks and strapped onto semis. From a few counties away. From halfway across the country.

For ranchers whose grazing land was destroyed by wildfires that tore across western Oklahoma this month, the cylindrical bales were an economic lifeline, a way to feed cattle marooned on grassless patches of charred red soil. The hay was also free, provided not by lawmakers in Washington or Oklahoma City, but mostly by strangers in other corners of rural America.

“If we waited on the government, we wouldn’t have it,” said Leo Hale, a local business owner who volunteered for 12-hour shifts distributing hay at the Vici rodeo grounds. Vici, population 700, was hit hard in the fires that scorched nearly 350,000 acres across the region, left two people dead, and blackened mile after mile of pasture. Donated bales of hay arrived from Kansas, Texas, Michigan and other parts of Oklahoma.
Skipping Down
Free hay arrived last year in Kansas after the state’s largest wildfire on record left thousands of cows dead and countless others with nothing to graze. It came by the truckload to eastern Montana last summer when flames destroyed huge swaths of grassland.

Skipping Down
The Oklahoma fires, which burned an area about the size of Chicago and New York City put together, made relatively few national headlines. But in agricultural circles — and especially in places that have seen their own fires — word of the destruction spread swiftly.

Skipping Down
The fire’s timing was especially cruel, coming in the midst of an extreme drought. Dead cows appear along roadsides, hooves pointed to the sky. Driveways lead to piles of rubble. When the wind blows, it smells a bit like a campfire.
