Frontier Internet Technician Clubs Miniature Schnauzer.

Also, it would be interesting to see Frontier's policy on how employees are to handle situation when they are "attacked" by an "aggressive" dog (not that Pepper was aggressive and not that he was attacked in this incident!). I am sure NOWHERE in the policy would it say to pound in the head of an attacking dog. I am sure cable techs run into dogs during their duties so there must be a policy in regards to it. Does the company require the techs to carry pepper spray with them and provide them with training on when and how to use that INSTEAD OF BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA TO THE HEAD?! I hardly believe that a Mini-Schnauzer was about to take him down and devour him!

Carrying pepper spray and using that is a safer option to all involved. You don't even have to spray it directly in the dog's eyes since that is particularly cruel.

You retreat in the opposite direction to get out of the dog's territory and spray a cloud behind you so that if the dog continues to pursue you then the dog hits that cloud of pepper spray and is repelled away from you. If he cannot handle dogs then maybe this type of job is not for him.

Setting aside the painful aspects of this incident for a moment, I wanted to point something out:

I find it very interesting (in a number of ways) that we have been served up this direct life lesson in light of the last posted session with the C's regarding animal welfare and food.

What can we take from this and from our reactions to this crime?

This is important, and it seems to me that Pepper is offering us something very valuable.

I got this reply..

Karen,

I agree that striking a dog is deplorable. Our employee was surprised and nipped by the dog and reacted.
No excuse. Frontier immediately agreed to pay the vet bills. Our hearts go out to the family who we have have spoken to directly. We are investigating the entire incident and will act appropriately. Our employee is very distraught. I am a fellow dog lover and dog owner and understand your response.

I just don't buy Stephanie's account of what happened. The logistics just don't line up for me. The man is tall and Schnauzer's are a smaller breed. I cannot visualize the man being that tall and "swinging backwards" and low enough to hit a small dog hard enough to cause the type of injuries that Pepper sustained.

Exactly, Pepper is about a foot tall and weighs about 15 pounds, and she was at the END of her leash when she was struck. This whole story this guy is now coming up with does not even come close to the truth.

As far as the DA not charging the man...I used to work in law enforcement as clerical support and there are MANY times where a police officer initially charges someone with a crime and the charge is dropped due to pressure from superiors and/or the DA and it often is due to someone knowing someone and calling out a favor or kisses the charge off due to a technicality error in the report by the Officer. Ya think North Carolina has the "good ol' boy" network thang going on?

That very well could be, I don't know yet. We have a GREAT Sheriff's Office up here, the Deputies were here within minutes, and they did the right thing. The District Attorney's office, on the other hand, is VERY political...and of course it's full of lawyers.

When it comes to Justice, I'll take the opinion of a Deputy over a Attorney's any day...but that's not the way the law works. Deputies represent an enforce our laws, but the Attorney's often twist the laws to suit their political cronies.

I do feel we need to give Mr. Taylor the benefit of the doubt, until Monday, since he has not had to chance to hear from the primary witnesses yet as they rushed the dog to the vet.. As I said before, the Frontier Technician didn't show any sign of remorse, or ANY emotion at all, until AFTER he found out he was being charged...and the thought of Pepper trying to "nip" him, or ANYBODY is ridiculous. The only danger poor Pepper represents is someone tripping over her when she wants her belly rubbed.

Obviously this is going to take awhile to work through, but the most important immediate goal, the best possible care for Pepper, has been achieved, and I thank everyone for helping with that!

It is interesting to note that while Greg Edwards has promised REACH that Frontier will cover Pepper's bills...he has not provided them with any funds as yet. He evidently gave REACH a credit card, which was declined because Vet fees were not an authorized corporate expense. He just told Gina that he is personally going to REACH to take care of the estimated bill...so we shall see.

Thank you Meager, I really appreciate seeing any response anyone gets. Clearly the Tech has concocted a story to CHA. Pepper is a foot tall, 15 lb flop mop who yaps in a range close to High C...and she was LEASHED.

How was the Tech "surprised" by a dog who barks loud enough for the whole mountain to hear her whenever she's sees a squirrel ? Have you ever heard of a "Stealth Schnauzer?"

The man would have had to be stone cold deaf not to hear those dogs FROM HIS TRUCK...much less from the front door, where he was told to wait while the dogs were put away.

Unbelievable...the lies just keep coming. I'm getting another update ready for tonight...I'm just waiting for REACH to call and let me know if Edwards actually followed through on his promise.

They seem to be taking the "repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth" route. Typical.

Yep, it very well could be that the DA has not filed charges yet rather than not at all. If this occurred on a Friday then it is understandable due to the circumstances of the witnesses not being available for the Assistant DA to interview.

Good to hear that the Deputies did the right thing. It will be interesting to see if the Assistant DA does the right thing for Pepper.

Is there an article anywhere that has the name of the Frontier Tech that committed the crime?

No, not YET. He was not wearing a name tag, and we can't get his name until the Deputy's report is made available Monday morning when it becomes a matter of public record.

Exactly, and they don't seem to realize that anyone who's ever met a miniature schnauzer knows they'd rather bark than breath. There was also a SECOND miniature schnauzer right next to Pepper, her best friend "Spunky" They were just close enough to each other to be able to touch without getting tangled. BOTH dogs started barking their heads off as the Frontier truck came up the driveway...because that's what schnauzers do.

How could this Tech possibly be "surprised" by a barking dog on a lead?

Some of the above comments could be added to the article for the benefit of the public readers who do not visit the forum.

I thought I was registered for SOTT comments, but evidently not, my log-in did not work. I re-registered and am waiting for my confirmation. As soon as it arrives, I will address the Frontier Representatives claim that their Technician was mauled by a stealth schnauzer.

Karen, may I use this email from Swallow on Pepper's blog?

Is the local media covering this at all? I tried googling in that area with no results.

Yes, at least two reporters have contacted the Raricks, perhaps one other...I'm not sure yet. I get the impression everyone is waiting to see what the ADA is going to do on Monday.
