I half understand... I think.

In one of the videos the guy has a coil aligned to the Earth's magnetic field, going from south to north. Do you know why that was?

When you have a coil and a capacitor, where the coil's field is mostly confined to a magnetic core and the capacitor is large enough that currents through the air are insignificant, then there is some leeway. But you are describing a setup where both the magnetic and electric fields are unconfined? How necessary is this and what creates this requirement?

I looked a that website you linked to and there was obviously very directed development going on but without knowing the background I wasn't able to figure out the intent.

Having the coil facing North aids in the building of a resonance condition, but is unimportant in the sense of a self oscillating circuit.

The circuit shakes the atomic lattice, bringing atomic vibrations in sync. Nature sees a way to save energy and lines up more atoms nearby, instead of using scattered paths to get from point a to point b.
This causes a temperature drop in aluminum and water, which transmit phonons (lattice vibrations) really well.
A properly designed circuit creates a condition where entropy runs backward into the circuit.
