Gulf of Mexico Loop current broken

A mention of the Gulf Stream (not Gulf Loop Current, though the two are intimately connected) here:

Coldest winter in 1,000 years on its way

After the record heat wave this summer, Russia's weather seems to have acquired a taste for the extreme.

Forecasters say this winter could be the coldest Europe has seen in the last 1,000 years.

The change is reportedly connected with the speed of the Gulf Stream, which has shrunk in half in just the last couple of years. Polish scientists say that it means the stream will not be able to compensate for the cold from the Arctic winds. According to them, when the stream is completely stopped, a new Ice Age will begin in Europe.

So far, the results have been lower temperatures: for example, in Central Russia, they are a couple of degrees below the norm.

“Although the forecast for the next month is only 70 percent accurate, I find the cold winter scenario quite likely,” Vadim Zavodchenkov, a leading specialist at the Fobos weather center, told RT. “We will be able to judge with more certainty come November. As for last summer's heat, the statistical models that meteorologists use to draw up long-term forecasts aren't able to predict an anomaly like that.”

In order to meet the harsh winter head on, Moscow authorities are drawing up measures to help Muscovites survive the extreme cold.

Most of all, the government is concerned with homeless people who risk freezing to death if the forecast of the meteorologists come true. Social services and police are being ordered to take the situation under control even if they have to force the homeless to take help.

Moscow authorities have also started checking air conditioning systems in all socially important buildings. All the conditioners are being carefully cleaned from the remains of summer smog.

Two days ago heard on Russian TV that Russia and perhaps Europe are going to experience one of the harshest winters in a while. They spoke about an upcoming Ice Age and brought up several scientific explanations including collapsing gulf stream and lack of sunspots. They also mentioned that Ice Age may develop rapidly, within two years. What is interesting, Israel and the region still have sunny and warm weather (today we had 31C). It is end of October and no sign of winter except for couple of showers. On the other hand, today I was told by a taxi driver that in 1991, a year when Israel had its own harshest winter, it was also hot and sunny until the end of December. And this is when all hell broke loose including snow in Jerusalem and Haifa. So who knows.

I'd just like to bring people's attention to the state of the Gulf Stream as of the 11th of January 2011.

fwiw I had a look through all previous Januaries to see how they compare....their does seem to be some cooling later in the current.....
The current as it is (right), seems mostly identical to Jan 1st 2004 (left)...until you look at the rest of the sea.

Is their data for later in the gulf current? I think any changes may be more pronounced there.

Re: Gulf of Mexico Loop current broken - Gulf Stream next?

The Gulf Stream going loony again. It's the first time I've seen it broken so far to the west:

That's from the 19th of April 2011.

Now it's just plain broken. Gulf Stream gave up!

Well, I looked through the archive and the video's....and I can't see anything this consistently quiet (from about mid way through 2010). The whole right side of those flows are about static.
Its been particularly cold in the UK (for the season) over the last few months.

The last time I checked on it was about a month ago and it looked pretty anemic even then, but now it has really come apart.

Wonder when the mainstream media is going to do a big splash on it (with the reminder that the BP oil volcano and corexit are largely responsible)? I'm not holding my breath while waiting.

It's been particularly warm over here in Finland the last months, especially this week. Go figure...

I reckon that means a wild summer for Europe (especially the North) and a 'brass monkey' winter, that may not end...

I've not seen it like that for the last few years I've been keeping an eye on it.
