Historical Events Database - Coordination

Thanks to Zadig's bug report I just realized that the PDF upload area on the Sources#Edit screen was hidden for you all. Sorry about that. It's visible now.

Note: You can upload PDFs even when the Source is frozen.

Yes, I do have that searcheable PDF-file and will use this one instead of the Kindle as soon as you've finalized it as a valuable source.

S#488 looks good!

Okay Data, I've completely re-edited one of my entries (Event E#1471) and sent it to you via the HED internal message system for reviewing.

I'm not quite sure whether I need to upload the PDF-file from ccel.org now as you previously have said that you had already done that yourself.

Apart from that, I would like to know how to go about this. Just drag and drop? Is there a size limit? Where do you keep those files? Can I access those, also the ones from others?

Simply dragging from your file manager and dropping into the "Drop files here" box will work. For each uploaded file you'll get a ".pdf" box on the Sources#Edit screen. When you click on the ".pdf" box, it will be downloded. You'll also see "PDF" links on the Sources#Index screen. Clicking these will start the download also. The size limit is 100MB if I remember correctly. The files are stored and archived on the server, and accessible only by the editors, so it's private and copyright is not an issue.

Here is the Link to the PDF which contains all the "Review passed" entries. The link will not change (but the contents will regularly), so you can bookmark it: {removed link}

The goal is to make this PDF as full as possible :D

Thanks for your prompt reply and explanations, Data.

I went back to the HED to inspect what you described and now understand better how all your new features actually work, what to look for and where precisely.

Great fun!

Should those last few entries have more full-sentence summaries? E.g., "Sparkling Star observed from ..."

Yes, it's a LOT of work, but I enjoy it too! :grad:

Yes it's fun and it's fun to see it growing. :)

The original source is sort of Spartan - e.g. sparkling star is most of the information provided by it.

I saw that my entry E#1221 has got twice the location China in the PDF, I am sorry. In the entry itself location is given only once.

Thanks Oxajil for chiming in and offering assistance.

In this specific situation however, your offer would be of limited utility since it's not so much about access per se to those volumes, as well as about incorporating them in PDF-format into the database of the HED where they then would be available for consultation by others than me personally.

As you stated, your access cannot provide for that. It's a pity, nevertheless.

Ah okay, bummer!

Yes, I've changed the headings to sentences in the present tense. I think all summaries should be complete sentences, and in the present tense rather than past tense.

This was a bug, it's fixed now.

No, you can drag a PDF from your computer into the "Drop files here" box on the Sources#Edit page. But if you do that, also input the URL where you got the PDF from.

I just figured out how to do that.

I'm working on one source, then I realized that I used an actual book from my library. It cannot be found anywhere online. Would this be an issue? I did, however, included the Amazon URL.

I may need a clarification on the volumes.

For an example, we have History of the Wars by Procopius of Caesarea (looks like there are three or four of us are using it). This is in 6-7 volumes (earlier years, it was 6; later year, it changed to 7) with eight books by this historian; translated by H. B. Dewing from Greek to English (side-by-side).

So, my question in regards to pdfs - can we upload multiple pdfs to the same Sources#Edit page?

Just a note: since there is nothing else out there like what we are doing, we want to make it useful for academics. That means that references must conform to academic citation norms. Even if you read the text on kindle, a kindle edition citation is NOT academic. You have to find the correct format.

It's not an issue. But maybe you can add into the Notes field that you got this book from your library? It might save someone in the future from a futile online search.

Edit: Which Source ID are you referring to?

Yes, you can upload more PDFs per Source, but in this case you should not (please re-read the documentation). Basically, the volume number must be unique for each Source. One "Source" by our definition is one physical publication that you can hold in your hands (with the exception of web articles of course). In that regard, Procopius is similar to Livy. See Livy's Source entries that I created some time ago: {removed link} . You don't have to create all six or seven entries for this series, only those that you actually used.

Thanks, Data, for the clarification. I'll work on it, making it unique since, for an example, the physical book of volume 1 contains Book I and Book II - this I could make into a single ID for each volume.

ID: 47

I cannot update the notes field at this time. I read this book at Perkins/Bostock Library (one of Duke University Libraries in Durham, NC) during Feb 2014.
