Today I've read this article published on SOTT:
_http://www.sott.net/article/284004-Iceland-tells-airlines-Bardarbunga-volcano-under-glacier-may-erupt-raises-alert-to-orange

Bardarbunga volcanoe is 25 KM wide and rises about 1900m above sea level. The last eruption was in 1996.
I found very informative the comment written by the SOTT editors at the end of the above article :

Comment:
Given the news, this quote from an article that we published in 2011 seems timely and pertinent:
Baroarbunga's last major eruption was horrendous. It changed the weather pattern in northern Europe and darkened the skies for months during 1477. That gigantic eruption generated the largest lava flow in 10,000 years and significantly expanded Iceland's land mass.

Grim experts concede that if the volcano's current activity culminates in an eruption equal to that of 1477, all of Scandinavia and much of northern Russia and Europe will be left reeling. The UK will be slammed by choking volcanic dust, grit and poisonous superheated gases. Commerce will grind to a halt, the skies will blacken for weeks, perhaps months, and agriculture would be severely affected.

The late Cornell University professor, astronomer Carl Sagan, used the consequences of large volcanic eruptions impact on global cooling as part of his theoretical model for the frightening prospect of a nuclear winter.

Ken Caldeira, an earth scientist at Stanford University, California, and member of Britain's prestigious Royal Society working group on geo-engineering, explained that "dust sprayed into the stratosphere in volcanic eruptions is known to cool the Earth by reflecting light back into space."

That simple process has led to the starvation of whole nations in the past. Volcanic gases and dust suspended in the atmosphere cool the Earth to a point where the growing seasons significantly shrink and crops cannot reach maturity.

I found this site where the activity of Baroarbunga volcanoe is closely monitored(with updates):

Bardarbunga volcano situation update from Civil Protection Iceland (19/08 at 10:12)
Below the press communique published yesterday by the Iceland Civil Protection.

The situation in Bárðarbunga volcano in NW Vatnajökull glacier has not changed today. The Civil Protection scientists committee held two meetings today with earth scientists from the Icelandic Meteorological Office and the University of Iceland. There is a very strong indication of magma movement east of Bárðarbunga caldera and on the edge of Dyngjujökull near Kistufell. Conductivity is high in Jökulsá á Fjöllum for the time of year.
Around 800 earthquakes have been detected since midnight. The strongest event was at 02:37 of the magnitude 4,5.
Civil Protection is still on Uncertainty Phase, which means that course of events has started that may lead to natural hazard in the near future. The National Commissioner of Icelandic Police (NCIP) has today met with the Prime Minister of Iceland, the Minister of Interior and government officials to consult on the issue. The NCIP also met with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, foreign embassies in Iceland and from key stakeholders in Iceland.
Mountain roads North of Vatnajökull, F88 (completely) and F910 (partly), have been closed for all traffic.

We will see how things will develop further.

Hi, Andrian:
You have my attention!

Icelandic volcanoes have caused big climate events in the past.

There's a pretty firm correlation between eruptions of big fissure-volcanoes there with onset of severe cold in the northern hemisphere in the late 1790's. "The Year Without A Summer," and several years afterwards. It was bad enough that records show the ground never thawed out in New England for whatever year it was.

I think I remember that it was Benjamin Franklin who associated that eruption with "dry fog", the obscuration of the sun, and the cooling of the climate.

It's worth keeping an eye on it--thanks for the report.

Even though one volcanic eruption can wreak such havoc, and the vulcanologists know this, the ptb still trot out the same old nonsense about humans being the cause of climate change. And the sheeple persist in believing this nonsense. :headbash: :headbash:
Go Figure.

The last update about the situation of Bárðarbunga volcanoe :

Bárðarbunga update August 23 15:15 UTC
The text above the Vedur.is pages has changed and now mentions the following :
Warning
It is believed that a small subglacial lava-eruption has begun under the Dyngjujökull glacier.
The aviation color code for the Bárðarbunga volcano has been changed from orange to red.

Official press release from the Iceland Civil Protection
A small eruption has started
Scientists at the Icelandic Met Office believe that a small sub-glacial volcanic eruption has now started under the icecap of Dyngjujökull glacier in the Northern part of Vatnajökull glacier.
Because of this, the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police has raised the alert phase to emergency phase.
At the same time the Met Office has raised the aviation color code from orange to red resulting in the air space above the eruption site being closed.
The eruption is considered a minor event at this point.
Because of a pressure from the glacier cap it is uncertain whether the eruption will stay sub-glacial or not.
The Coast Guards aircraft, TF-Sif, is currently monitoring the area and there are no visible signs of a plume at this moment. Nothing indicates floods because of the eruption.
At this stage measurements taken is based on a small event.
The Jökulsárgljúfur canyon has been closed and evacuation of tourists in that area and around Dettifoss waterfall has started.
The situation at this stage does not call for evacuation of habitants in Kelduhverfi, Öxarfjördur and Núpasveit. People in those areas are encourag

We will see how things will develop further.

Yes, it is red alert now:

This can get very interesting:

Gigantic Icelandic Volcano Could Plunge Europe Into Immediate Ice Age...

The latest updates from the icelandic Met office can be found here: _http://en.vedur.is/about-imo/news/
They issued the following warning:
Warning: It is believed that a small subglacial lava-eruption has begun under the Dyngjujökull glacier. The aviation color code for the Bárðarbunga volcano has been changed from orange to red.

They also think that lava has touched the ice (150 to 400 meters of ice is above the area) although no changed in the surface has been observed so far.

A summary of the situation is here: _http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/articles/nr/2947

EDIT: Update:
The aviation color code has been raised to "red" as the data is currently interpreted as a subglacial eruption. Both the thickness of the ice at the possible contact point (100-400 m) and the volume of lava in possible contact with ice are highly uncertain. It could be 0-20 hours before lava reaches the surface of the ice. It is also possible that the lava will not break through the ice, and the eruption could remain subglacial.
