In Praise of the Quiet Life

Not sure if I quite buy it luke. It seems to me that we are being given an undisguised dose of Christian wishful thinking (sourced from the deeper knowledge of the Stoics) whilst ignoring the harsh reality that the matrix has us by the nose, that the choice to take up the quiet life has for the vast majority, long gone by. For the quiet life read today's homeless as about the only root available for such a path, particularly in the west. Call my cynical but I think many will attest to the fact that far from having the easy-come-easy-go choice of ignoring that party or turning down that tempting promotion, present reality is all about struggle and survival within a tsunami of demands and pressures. But maybe that's merely my perception and the reality I've created for myself! :huh:

Interesting, I didn't see it that way.

Thinking about it, there is a movie Hollywood did along this lines which was shrouded under the guise of a romcom. Basically, the guy had everything... the high life... the busy life... then one day... he had a modest life... the scale of the fall was vast... but the movie showed that modesty had its allure... which tended to be more emotional in nature than material.


Lastly, since you mentioned the Stoics.... SoL is hot on your heals...

 
Thanks for pointing out the information regarding the video on stoicism. At the time when the discussion was taking place about it in the forum, a couple of years ago, I wasn't paying attention.

Anyways I'll catch up on those threads now just to see what this ancient philosophy is about.

Laura made many references / connections to the Stoics throughout Comets and the Horns of Moses.
