Infant with eczema

It appears baby is breaking out in reaction to the baby custard. My spouse thinks it is the butter. I'm don't know if it is the butter or the coconut milk. I guess I will need to make it one day with coconut milk and no butter, and then another day with butter and no coconut milk.

Hey hlat,

Does your coconut milk contain Guar Gum or Xantham? Either of those additives, which are commonly found in coconut milk, can cause hives and skin rashes in your children among other things.

Here is a quick and simple recipe I did for the first time today and it was the best coconut milk I've ever tasted. And without the guar gum or intestinal discomfort i've experienced in the past with coconut milk. Also if that isn't the culprit you could try substituting ghee or clarified butter (milk solids and proteins removed) for the regular butter.

The ghee butter can also be done at home with a butter source you trust. I've used this method. _http://nomnompaleo.com/post/15235810877/d-i-y-ghee

Zero vaccinations for this baby. We learned enough in time.

The coconut milk we've been using does have guar gum. However, Amazon is sending me a case of Natural Value organic coconut milk which does not have guar gum.

It makes sense that the reaction is due to dairy, since the custard is new but the eczema started around the time we started using dairy formula (we have stopped). So, I will get some organic ghee and try that with the guar gum free coconut milk.

Nice. Well done.

Sounds like a good plan.

Good deal. Hope everything clears up.

Hi hlat,

I think you've come to the right conclusion.

I've had eczema most of my life, since infancy. And the only thing that got rid of it is stopping dairy completely. Stress might be a contributing factor, meaning it might make it worse if there's casein in the system to begin with but as a cause? No, I don't agree with that.

Hopefully your baby will be fine, keep up the good work :)

Good idea.

We've given up using the coconut milk in our custard and when we make tomorrow's batch, we are going to use pure lard (that we rendered ourselves from organically raised pigs) and no butter just for a few days of testing.

You might want to try raw goat's milk if you can find any around. When my youngest started having her issues after I stopped nursing her and put her on a formula (between 9 months and one year old), the chiropractor who helped suggested the goat's milk. Fortunately, by connections found through the organic food raising people around (lot of new agey types), I found someone who would sell me raw goat's milk and the difference was like night and day.

Baby wouldn't eat the custard so I ate it. I will keep trying.

We had to stop using the calendula because baby's skin was getting worse. The pediatrician said Cetaphil works, and the body wash and lotion did work for baby.
