The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on August 29 that its attack on Yemen a day earlier targeted the army chief of staff and defense minister of the Houthis (Ansar Allah).
At least ten strikes hit the Yemen capital, Sanaa, which was held by the Houthis during the attack. Later, Hebrew media reports revealed that the IDF had intelligence that the army chief, Muhammad Abd Al-Karim al-Ghamari, was en route to a meeting with senior officials of the group including the defense minister, Mohamed al-Atifi.
According to the reports, the two top officials were the intended targets of the strike, though the military is still awaiting confirmation on the outcome.
Reports from Arab media said that Houthi Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi was killed in a separate strike on an apartment in Sanaa.
“This was a complex strike based on intelligence regarding their gathering,” the IDF said. “We exploited a narrow intelligence window to carry out a precise operation.
The military added that it is preparing for possible retaliation by the Houthis, but stresses that at this stage, this is not based on a concrete warning but rather a general assessment.
Responding to the initial reports of assassinations following the IDF attack, a Houthi defense official told Al-Masirah TV, which is affiliated with the group, that Israel was presenting “conflicting accounts of its aggression and allegations of targeting leaders in the capital, Sanaa.”
Separately, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir hailed the attack on Yemen during a situational assessment on August 29.
“The Houthis operate as an additional terrorist branch of Iran, continue to attack Israel, and threaten regional and international stability. Our message is clear — there will be no tolerance,” he said.
The attack was the sixteenth to be carried out by the IDF against the Houthis. In one of the previous attacks, Israel attempted to assassinate al-Ghamari, but failed. Most of the remaining strikes targeted civilian infrastructure in Houthi-run areas. Still, the group continued to launch attacks in support of the Gaza Strip.
While the results of the latest IDF attack remain unclear, there is no doubt that Israel is now allocating more resources to the confrontation with the Houthis.
