Kassiopaea Karaoke

Big thanks to all of you sending over the music. I'm saving everything in a folder and then once I get it all, I'll add my scans of various things, and we'll put something together! I even think we should practice some songs to sing for special occasions. Singing together is just so special: activates limbic resonance and so forth.

I sang in choir of young for years.
Here are 2 wonderful songs really funny to sing in group.

With all the beautiful music you all have been posting, this one seems rather simple and very modern, yet, I think it's got good lyrics and it can be adapted easily too.

Incubus - "Drive"

Sometimes I feel the fear of the uncertainty stinging clear
And I can't help but ask myself how much I'll let the fear take the wheel and steer

It's driven me before, and it seems to have a vague
Haunting mass appeal
Lately I'm beginning to find that I should be the one behind the wheel

Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there
With open arms and open eyes, yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there, I'll be there

So if I decide to waiver my chance to be one of the hive
Will I choose water over wine and hold my own and drive, oh oh
It's driven me before, and it seems to be the way
That everyone else gets around
Lately, I'm beginning to find that when I drive myself, my light is found

Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there
With open arms and open eyes, yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there, I'll be there

Would you choose water over wine... hold the wheel and drive?

Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there
With open arms and open eyes, yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there, I'll be there

Maybe this one is little different then other songs posted here but I really like this one

Thinking about songs from childhood - Little Donkey's lyrics couldn't be more symbolic, as well as the donkey being esoteric (i think); and it's cute as anything :P

This version has an sweet trumpet bit ;) and i don't like them usually.

Nina and Frederik - Little Donkey

https://youtu.be/_qudi6JqE-M

Little donkey, little donkey on the dusty road
Got to keep on plodding onwards with your precious load
Been a long time, little donkey, through the winters night
Don't give up now, little donkey,
Bethlehem's in sight

Ring out those bells tonight
Bethlehem, Bethlehem
Follow that star tonight
Bethlehem, Bethlehem

Little donkey, little donkey, had a heavy day
Little donkey, carry Mary safely on her way
Little donkey, little donkey, journey's end is near
There are wisemen waiting for a sign to bring them here

Do not falter little donkey, there's a star ahead
It will guide you, little donkey, to a cattle shed

Ring out those bells tonight
Bethlehem, Bethlehem
Follow that star tonight
Bethlehem, Bethlehem

Little donkey, little donkey, had a heavy day
Little donkey, carry Mary, safely on her way
Little donkey, carry Mary, safely on her way

also, i came across this calypso style version of 'God made me', which is a brilliant idea of how to adapt a tune. We used to sing this at class assembly. It pops into my head often.

God made me

https://youtu.be/KA00VqlMX8U

1 I love the sun,
it shines on me;
God made the sun,
and God made me.

2 I love the stars,
they twinkle on me;
God made the stars,
and God made me.

[and so on..]

I noticed that most people you come sing or play with are afraid of singing in harmony, they limit to sing in unison or at an upper or lower octave from the main melody. It should come naturally because the other day in a bus, there were two little children singing some simple melodies, probably cartoon songs or whatever, and not only they sang to scale, one was at a perfect fifth interval from the other. Maybe a simple way to get used to sing in harmony is to take a duet, and sing along alternatively with one part than the other. For example, the Everly Brothers (country music/early rock & roll) can be one starting example for that.

Here is one example (a favorite) :

I never heard of the Everly Brothers before. How outstanding and beautiful! Very, very nice...

Here's a few folk songs I think might work:

https://youtu.be/NK4G-fcwUIc

Lyrics:

When I first come to this country in eighteen and forty nine
I saw many fair lovers, but I never saw mine
I viewéd all around me, I found I was quite alone
And me a poor stranger and a long way from home

My true love she won't have me and this I understand
She wants a freeholder and I've got no land
But I could maintain her on silver and gold
And as many of the fine things as my love's house could hold

Fare you well to old father. Fare you well to mother too.
I'm going for to ramble this wide world all through
And when I get weary, I'll sit down and cry
And I'll think of Pretty Saro, my darling, my dear.

Well I wish I was a poet, could write some fine hand
I would write my love a letter that she might understand.
I'd send it by the waters where the islands overflow
And I'd think of my darling wherever she'd go.

Way down in some lonesome valley. Way down in some lonesome grove
Where the small birds does whistle, their notes to increase
My love she is slender, both proper and neat
And I wouldn't have no better pastimes than to be with my sweet.

Well I wish I was a turtle dove, had wings and could fly
Just now to my love's lodging tonight I'd draw nigh
And in her lily-white arms I'd lie there all night
And I'd watch the little windows for the dawning of day.

Well I strolled through the mountains, I strolled through the vale
I strolled to forget her, but it was all in vain.
On the banks of Ocoee, on the mount of said brow
Where I once loved her dearly and I don't hate her now.

Lyrics:

Twas in the merry month of May
When green buds all were swelling,
Sweet William on his death bed lay
For love of Barbara Allen.

He sent his servant to the town
To the place where she was dwelling,
Saying you must come, to my master dear
If your name be Barbara Allen.

So slowly, slowly she got up
And slowly she drew nigh him,
And the only words to him did say
Young man I think you're dying.

He turned his face unto the wall
And death was in him welling,
Good-bye, good-bye, to my friends all
Be good to Barbara Allen.

When he was dead and laid in grave
She heard the death bells knelling
And every stroke to her did say
Hard hearted Barbara Allen.

Oh mother, oh mother go dig my grave
Make it both long and narrow,
Sweet William died of love for me
And I will die of sorrow.

And father, oh father, go dig my grave
Make it both long and narrow,
Sweet William died on yesterday
And I will die tomorrow.

Barbara Allen was buried in the old churchyard
Sweet William was buried beside her,
Out of sweet William's heart, there grew a rose
Out of Barbara Allen's a briar.

They grew and grew in the old churchyard
Till they could grow no higher
At the end they formed, a true lover's knot
And the rose grew round the briar.

:) They recorded a few classics that were covered later by a few others, like "love hurts" here: _https://youtu.be/Db47zLee3vA but I'm not sure which are the most known. Not choir material but an easy way to learn singing simple melodies with some harmony.

Singing just feels good.
I love this song: Shenandoah.

Given the amount of musicians we have on here, would it not be an idea to write our own song, like a song version of POTS? Maybe Laura could get some guidance as to the lyrics from the c's, then anyone musically inclined could have a go at writing the music/melody and we could refine via the forum and eventually create a song that could be sung at gatherings etc.

just an idea :cool2:
