Kassiopaea Karaoke

Given the amount of musicians we have on here, would it not be an idea to write our own song, like a song version of POTS? Maybe Laura could get some guidance as to the lyrics from the c's, then anyone musically inclined could have a go at writing the music/melody and we could refine via the forum and eventually create a song that could be sung at gatherings etc.

just an idea :cool2:

Interesting idea!

A folk song I enjoyed learning to sing during voice class is "To the Sky" by Carl Strommen. Wonder how it might work to sing as a group.

Strommen adapted the song from an American hym tune called "Prospect." Here's an arrangement of the tune:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5udoa49pyuE

And the lyrics to "To the Sky":

And then a favorite of mine by The Beatles:
"Let it Be"

With all the beautiful music you all have been posting, this one seems rather simple and very modern, yet, I think it's got good lyrics and it can be adapted easily too.

I love that song :)

Here are 2 wonderful songs really funny to sing in group.

Oh happy day :

Definitely, there are beautiful Gospel songs dedicated to Jesus Christ (JC) like "oh happy day", the good news is that you can change those lyrics to Julius Caesar (JC) :D

These are two more songs that I think are funny to sing in group ;)

The song 'You'll Never Walk Alone' was originally from the 1950's musical Carousel but the most famous version is probably by the Liverpool group Gerry & the Pacemakers. It has some great uplifting lyrics with a rousing chorus and finale ( usually sung by many football (soccer) fans at matches in the UK).

https://youtu.be/OnhidBHw0Eo

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown

Walk on walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown

Walk on walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk

You'll never walk
You'll never walk alone

Throwing out a lot I've listed over this past week here. I don't know many folk songs, but these are ones that inspire me, fwiw. My mind speaks to me sometimes with song lyrics.

https://youtu.be/RiqgTPmkfek

This is about a daughter and her mom trying to teach her. Sounds like a narcissistic family.

https://youtu.be/fI3tP-hGtNU

Everybody needs someone's help sometimes

https://youtu.be/O6VbT7mZo7o

Sometimes we need to cry it out and process things.

https://youtu.be/E6-2eXjx-h0

A fun oldie that came to mind. Giving the day its due, being an obyvatel. Also a bit of authoritarianism?

https://youtu.be/-sSbkA-xd7M

What am I doing all this for? "Cause I ain't living just to breathe."

https://youtu.be/7dwuzqF6huc

One of my favorites. Learning to fly, live life, lessons, etc.! "Make my way back home when I learn to fly high."

https://youtu.be/s4QL0L9fgbg

Sharing your suffering, networking. Down and maybe hurt someone or yourself? "I didn't mean to treat you oh so bad." "Couldn't share the pain, they watch you suffer." One of my favorite guitar solos too.

https://youtu.be/AtSi9jA7SDk

Always loved the piano melody."And if you have a minute why don't we go,Talk about it somewhere only we know?" Maybe it's about returning to paradise? ;)

https://youtu.be/B8UeeIAJ0a0

Love song and generic life things, but could also be esoteric and making yourself known to the Universe.

https://youtu.be/ZADpco6Zn9I

"I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you"

https://youtu.be/Qvha7NallFk

Bit of a love song, but also motivational:
"Are you gonna live your life wonderin' standing in the back lookin' around?
Are you gonna waste your time thinkin' how you've grown up or how you missed out?
Things are never gonna be the way you want.
Where's it gonna get you acting serious?"

https://youtu.be/9Qbnsk2_F5g

Motivational, welcome to 3D learning. Salvation and forgiveness are in yourself:
"I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened before"

"Maybe redemption has stories to tell
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna go?
Salvation is here"

https://youtu.be/cu7QvOQKcKk

Lovely piano, a lost loved one haunting you. Shades of attachments?

https://youtu.be/L-a6AZYC3OQ

This is about friendships breaking up as one matures. But I think of it as the future. "In many ways they'll miss the good old days. Someday. Someday." Also getting things done: "I ain't wasting no more time."

https://youtu.be/Y6yUY7M9yfw

Hang on in hard times. Remember Frodo and Sam's journey. ;)

https://youtu.be/aaC-0pnf9F0

This is about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and how no help came (as shown in the official music video). But we truly know that, "Help is on the way."

https://youtu.be/m326LNIRB3k

I've heard this is actually about the ancient Pompeii disaster. It's something we're seeing today.

https://youtu.be/EvC4XxnrvaA

I listen to this when I'm inspired and feeling spiritual.

"Tell me all your thoughts on God
'Cause I would really like to meet her
And ask her why we're who we are.
Tell me all your thoughts on God
'Cause I am on my way to see her
So tell me am I very far, am I very far now?""

https://youtu.be/W8KmhmpaKuk

Recapitulation, re-framing your past.

I have a few links here to some of the songs which I used to play in church.
They should all be easy to play and sing ( If I can do it, anyone can..)

I have to say it was giving me goosebumps just listening to them again.
Enjoy!

Guys, I just wrote a super short guide on "bel canto" singing (see attachment). I picked the three most valuable and easy exercises that I know.

Included is a simple score on 'Amazing Grace' so that you can try out the technique.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Good tips there Aragorn! The exercises feel a little awkward, but there's definitely a noticeable difference between 'normal' singing quality and bel canto.

I can just hear the Cassiopaea Choir now. ;D

Anyone else having awful voice? :)

I think a choir has a place for every type of voice, with the proper training. :) I really enjoyed Aragorn's pdf about learning to sing properly. I wish I took choir in university.

Dirgni, thank you so much for sharing the greensleeves. You opened up an entire dimension of celtic music I listened to a bit as a teen, but almost forgot about entirely.

Love this song too, it's called Gathering the Flowers. I cleaned up the lyrics a little bit for the version I enjoy singing the most.
_https://soundcloud.com/lindseywise/gathering-the-flowers

Gathering the flowers
Flowers from the forest
Forest full of medicine
to help us with our healing

Healing of our bodies
Body, mind, and spirit
Spirit of the Water,
come wash over my heart.

My heart is growing open
Open to each moment.
Each moment is a miracle
that’s calling us to gather.

Gathering the flowers
Flowers from the forest
Forest full of medicine
to help us with our healing

Healing of our bodies
Body, mind, and spirit
Spirit of the Water,
come wash away my tears.

Tears of joy I’m crying,
Crying for my people,
People, we are ready,
Ready to be free.

Free to be beautiful.
Beautiful, empowered,
empowering the people
to get together Gather...

Gathering the Flowers...

Yeah thanks for those. I love those greensleeves melodies.

This traditional folk song is a good candidate I think :).

The Gypsy Rover - The Seekers

https://youtu.be/U45-_d0ZMMs

Whistling Gypsy came over the hill
Down thru the valley so shady
He whistled and he sang
Till the greenwood rang
And he won the heart of a lady

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
He whistled and he sang
Till the greenwood rang
And he won the heart of a lady

She left her father's castle gate
She left her fair young lover
She left her servants
And her estate
To follow the gypsy rover

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
She left her servants
And her estate
To follow the gypsy rover

She left behind her velvet gown
And shoes of Spanish leather
They whistled and they sang
Till the greenwood rang
As they rode off together

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
They whistled and they sang
Till the greenwood rang
As they rode off together

Last night she slept on a goose feather bed
With silken sheets for cover
Tonight she sleeps
On the cold cold ground
Beside her gypsy lover

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
Tonight she sleeps
On the cold cold ground
Beside her gypsy lover

Her father saddled up his fastest steed
And roamed the valleys all over
Sought his daughter
At great speed
And the whistling gypsy rover

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
Sought his daughter
At great speed
And the whistling gypsy rover

He came at last to a mansion fine
Down by the river Claydee
And there was music
And there was wine
For the gypsy and his lady

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
And there was music
And there was wine
For the gypsy and his lady

"He is no gypsy my father" she said
"But lord of these lands all over
And I shall stay
'til my dying day
With my whistling gypsy rover"

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
And I shall stay
'til my dying day
With my whistling gypsy rover"

I don't know if you know Peter Hollens, he does a capella covers and only uses his voice and mouth to make any other sound accompanying the voice. I thought it might be useful since anyone could accompany the song in some way, even those who don't know how to sing or can't reach some notes.

Amazing Grace

https://youtu.be/7n145-J8ejg?ecver=2

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

When we've been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun
We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we first begun

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see

O comme, o comme Emmanuel

https://youtu.be/zshzkkD-NYA?ecver=2

O come o come emmanuel
And ransom captive israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the son of god appears

Rejoice rejoice
Emmanuel shall come to thee oh israel

Oh come thou day-spring come and cheer
Our spirits by thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight

Rejoice rejoice
Emmanuel shall come to thee oh israel

Les Miserables medley

https://youtu.be/2yVDaxhNT-Y?ecver=2

On my own... pretending he's beside me
All alone, i walk with him til morning
Without him, the feel his arms around me
And when i lose my way i close my eyes
And he has found me
In the rain, the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness the trees are full of starlight
And all i see him and me forever and forever

Oh my friends my friends forgive me
That i live and you are gone
There's a grief that can't be spoken
There's a pain goes on and on
Phantom faceas at the window
Phantom shadows on the floor
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more
Oh my friends my friends don't ask me
What your sacrifice was for
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will sing no more...

Bring him peace... bring him joy
He is young... he is only a boy
You can take, You can give
Let him be, let him live
If i die, let me die
Let him live, bring him home

The hanging tree

https://youtu.be/aJISG67FjeM?ecver=2

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
They strung up a man
They say who murdered three
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree

Those are 4 of my favorites songs from him, there are more easy songs on his YouTube channel but I wasn't sure if you want some specific types of songs or some specific lyrics or both.

Oh my gosh!!! The Unicorn Song was the very first song that I learned when I was little!!! Thank you for this; I still remember the lyrics!
I think my love of singing came to a life-long love when I sang in high school and I haven't looked back since. If I don't sing something during the day, it hasn't been a good day.
