I'm sorry for your loss griffin. It is a terrible shock to expect to see someone you love again and then find out that you never will. We lost our Rocky in that way several years ago - we brought him in for some tests the vet called and told me that Rocky's liver was full of cancer and that I needed to decide in the next second whether to operate or put him down.
I have another dog now, and I don't take any day with her for granted. I tell her everyday several times a day how much I love her. I tell my daughter that too.
