Zaev Interview Causes Stir in Macedonia, Serbia

In an interview with the Serbian Kurir said that the parallel session of Parliament on Thursday was legitimate as is the election of Talat Xhaferi as Speaker, and that SDSM has the majority in Parliament to now continue forming a Government.
A number of comments Zaev made in the interview were seen as controversial. Macedonian commentators picked up his statement that Talat Xhaferi, whom SDSM recognizes as a new Speaker, was an exemplary officer in the Macedonian army before the 2001 conflict, and later became a member of Parliament. In fact, Xhaferi deserted from the Macedonian army and joined the Albanian National Liberation Army whose insurgency in first half of 2001 caused hundreds of killed and brought the country to the brink of a civil war. A lot of comments were stirred by his claims that the 2012 Islamist killing of five Macedonians on the even of Good Friday was somehow staged by the VMRO-DPMNE led Government, as was the 2015 attack by a group of Albanian terrorists led by commanders from Kosovo on the city of Kumanovo. Zaev provided no evidence for these claims, but said that he has heard wiretapped conversations that indicate something in that direction. He said that the group of ethnic Albanian Islamists who are sentenced to life in prison for the 2012 killing are likely innocent.
Serbian officials strongly condemned his statement that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is a nationalist. Zaev singled Vucic out for his good cooperation with VMRO-DPMNE President Nikola Gruevski.
"I don't know what Aleksandar Vucic and the Government of Serbia did to deserve this brutal and scandalous attack on the part of this pretendent to be a Macedonian Prime Minister. Doesn't he have enough problems in Skopje, so he now goes looking for problems in Belgrade? Why won't Zoran Zaev attack Edi Rama and Hashim Thaci, but attacks Vucic? He is not that naive not to think that the concept of Greater Albania is incomplete without Skopje", Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said. Aleksandar Vulin, Serbian Labour Minister also asked Zaev whether he was told by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama or Kosovo President Hashim Thaci to make this attack on Vucic.
Zaev also tried to endear himself to Serbs, saying that he considers Kosovo to be the heart of Serbia. Macedonia recognized Kosovo as independent in 2008, and in his interview, Zaev condemned the recent Macedonian support for Kosovo to join UNESCO, saying that it would put historically Serbian churches and monasteries under the control of Muslim Kosovar Albanians who have nothing to do with them. Kosovars insist that the churches are part of the shared legacy of the region and see such statements as Serbian laying claim to Kosovo. The statement is made as Zaev needs the support of parties of ethnic Albanians in Macedonia to form a Government.
Explaining further the controversial Tirana platform which includes a clause of apology to Albanians for genocide during the Balkan Wars, the world wars and the early period of Communism, Zaev said that it would condemn the armies who occupied Macedonia at the time. He pointed out the Italian and German armies, but not the army of Kingdom of Serbia and Yugoslavia.
