"It was a very sharp, thin yellow object with a green area. It was 2,000ft up and stationary. I thought it was about 10 miles away, although I later realised it was approximately 40 miles from us. At first, I thought it was the size of a [Boeing] 737.
Forgive me if I appear ignorant. I have never been to the U.K. But aren't 'feet' and 'miles' USofA standard measurements. I thought the metric system was used over there. So why, on their own 'turf', are they using standard measures (feet/miles) and not metric measurements of meter & kilometers?

British have traditionally used imperial measurements. So we use miles per hour, roads and distances measured in miles, height in feet and inches. There is a long lag of moving over to a metric system - despite pressure from EU. So USA does not have a monopoly on using these measurements.
