For those of us who spend time outside, the sight of stagnant, murky, greenish water instantly raises concern. We recognize that it’s potentially harmful algae, so we steer clear, keep our pets away and we definitely don’t swim in it or drink it. At this point, there have been no confirmed reports of humans dying from toxic algae.

But last month, after a California hiking family mysteriously died on a trail near Yosemite National Park, officials pointed to toxic algae as a prime suspect. The idea of that was as strange as it was terrifying, particularly because John Gerrish and his wife, Ellen Chung, were experienced hikers, and just out for a day trip with their 1-year-old child Miju and dog Oski.

Sierra National Forest had posted a warning sign about toxic algae at the Savage Lundy Trailhead in June. Since the family died, additional tests have confirmed that dangerous anatoxins from the algae — more accurately called cyanobacteria — are present in the Merced River near the trail.

But could this bacteria really be to blame for the deaths of two healthy adults, a baby and a dog? How could that have happened? And what else do we need to know about harmful bacteria and algae in the water, particularly at a time when climate change is making the problem worse?

To help answer these questions, SFGATE called Taylor Weiss, an assistant professor in environmental and resource management at the Polytechnic School at Arizona State University and a member of the Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation. He did his PhD on algae and has been studying it since he was 6 years old, he says, when his father — an environmental engineer — would filter algae samples at the kitchen table.

Not all algae, which are essentially plants that photosynthesize and live in water, are harmful. In fact most types of algae aren’t, Weiss says, and it’s really just a few kinds that can bloom quickly and produce toxins that are dangerous to people and animals. Cyanobacteria is the most common of these, and it blooms most often in warm water that’s high in nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus.

September 17, 2021 - Grand Canyon, Ariz. – The National Park Service (NPS) has successfully located missing person, Clifton Beck.

On Friday, September 17 at approximately 8:18 a.m., search and rescue personnel located Clifton “Cliff” Beck near Roosevelt Point on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. At this time, Beck is in stable condition and is being treated and transported to the North Rim developed area by EMS personnel.

Cliff Beck of Mount Airy, Maryland was reported as overdue on September 14. Beck obtained a backcountry permit to spend two nights on the Walhalla Plateau from September 10-12.

From September 15-17, rangers conducted a comprehensive search of the Walhalla plateau using ground teams, helicopter flights, and a fixed wing aircraft.

Thank you for the link to this video, jar. It seems he sees quite plainly what is going on. He also seems to see quite plainly the "unseen".

Had linked to his book ("Steve Isdahl wrote a book here") that I read most of it - it starts off with Steve's own experiences when young, which were later supported by his granddad, who also had experiences.

Steve discusses the main promotors of Sasquatch theory that have dominated the scene, and takes issue with them for distracting people with endless nothings. He makes good mention of people like Dave, and others, with all their DNA collected, and those said other promotors/labs/authorities/scientists that do not want to touch them. Steve is frustrated with them and based on the following, one begins to see that these exchanges with Sasquatch are much more common than people are lead to believe.

The main part of the book is taken up by people's individual stories (a lot of repeating themes), and many are compelling stories. Steve states that he has received (at the time of his writing) something like 9,000 emails from people who have had their own experiences, which are described. Some are chilling.

Most people (like UFO contacts) are too embarrassed to talk about what they have experienced - or ridiculed for doing so, so they don't speak up. Hunters factor heavily, yet not always. Woman and men not hunting also tell of their experiences, along with native Americans. There are police and other professionals that also describe their own stories in his book.

There is supposed to be another book (or it is coming), yet did not search it out.

Listening to another of his videos, it seems he is talking about something (sasquatch?) using these techniques to keep people away from them and their area.

Yes, many of the people writing discuss being pushed off their own land with various techniques (if that is what you mean?). Whole families (down to a child Sasquatch) can appear in people's back woods. Some had their own children being watched by them, and even their homes being banged upon.

Described are the way in which they can move - almost hyperdimensional in some ways (gravity, going through things...)

As said prior, there are things that are reminiscent of some aspects of Skinwalker ranch. Some align with 411 missing stories (a young boy gets separated from adults on a nature walk - sees a Sasquatch who vocally signals, and the boy becomes paralyzed, and he is lifted up by said Sasquatch; no fear, yet there is mental exchanges et cetera). Not all people felt threatened.

One other factor that comes up, it seems that once a person has an experience with them, they are somehow keyed to them and sense them (and the opposite) and will run across them years later.

Most of the experiences were from the U.S. and Canada, however not all, even the UK had a story.

GREAT FALLS — After five days of searching, efforts to find Kim Crumbo at Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone National Park have transitioned from rescue to recovery, park officials said on Friday, September 24, 2021.

Crumbo was reported missing several days ago, and his half-brother Mark O'Neill was found dead along the lakeshore on Monday, September 20.

Over the last five days, crews swept all the trails in the area, searched the entire Shoshone Lake shoreline by boat, and gridded the open water by helicopter, but did not find Crumbo.

Crews from the National Park Service’s Submerged Research Center will begin using sonar equipment to detect clues in the water.
Park search crews continue to search for Crumbo by foot and boat, with assistance from Grand Teton National Park’s interagency helicopter.

Recovery efforts will continue for the next several days as conditions warrant.

A news release from Yellowstone states: "This incident still remains under investigation. While we cannot comment further about the specifics of this investigation, we will provide updates when appropriate to do so."

(SEPTEMBER 21, 2021) One man has been found dead and his half-brother is missing in Yellowstone National Park. Search and rescue crews found the body of Mark O’Neill along the east shore of Shoshone Lake on Monday, September 20, 2021.

O’Neill, 67 years old, from Chimacum, Washington, and his half-brother, Kim Crumbo, 74, from Ogden, Utah, were reported overdue by a family member on Sunday, September 19 from a four-night backcountry trip to Shoshone Lake.

Park crews on Sunday found a vacant campsite with gear on the south side of Shoshone Lake, as well as a canoe, paddle, personal flotation device, and other personal belongings on the east shore of the lake.

Crews found the body of O’Neill along the east shore on the morning of Monday; at this point, there is no word on the suspected cause of death.

Search and rescue efforts continue with 10 crew members on foot in the area Tuesday, September 21 to locate Crumbo. Grand Teton National Park interagency ship and crew are also assisting with air operations.

Yellowstone National Park said in a news release that O’Neill and Crumbo are both National Park Service retirees, and Crumbo is a former Navy SEAL.

Park officials said that incident is being investigated, and that "while we cannot comment further about the specifics of this investigation, we will provide updates when appropriate to do so. We ask the public to maintain distance from any law enforcement personnel, equipment, vehicles and their related activity for the safety of the public in this remote area and to protect the integrity of our work."

Shoshone Lake, the park’s second-largest lake, is located at the head of the Lewis River southwest of West Thumb. The average year-round temperature of the lake is about 48 F (9 C). A 3-year-old boy who had been missing in Texas since Wednesday afternoon as been found alive.

Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell told NBC News that Christopher Ramírez was found at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday after a "citizen called in after hearing some noise."

"It looks like little boy was just lost in the woods," Sowell said, adding that he was found almost 5 miles from his home in Plantersville.

The boy and his mother, Araceli Núñez, have already been reunited. While Christopher seemed "in good shape," the boy was taken to a children's hospital out of precaution, Sowell said.

More than 150 law enforcement officials from several agencies as well as search organizations and volunteers had been searching for Christopher since Wednesday.

The search party inspected several water tanks and reservoirs in the area. They also conducted ground searches with K-9 units and surveyed the area with drones and helicopters. Officials also reviewed surveillance footage from nearby homes.

Search operations reached a standstill on Friday afternoon as authorities waited for any tips through 911 calls or through their dispatch center.

Christopher initially disappeared while his mother and another family member were unloading groceries from their car at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday The boy was playing with his dog outside the home and chased it out of sight of the adults, the family said.

While the dog came back to the house, the boy did not.

In a strange twist to this case, the FBI held the remains an inordinate amount of time and would not release them till 2000. This is the second time I have documented the FBI holding remains for a lengthly period - they also did this in the case of Robert Springfield when he vanished and his remains were found in Montana. The Springfields eventually had to sue the FBI to get the remains; refer to Missing 411-Western United States for details. It would be fascinating what the FBI laboratories are finding in relationship to these bodies. I have filed Freedom of Information Act requests in the past against the FBI attempting to get lab results on deceased individuals. They claim they cannot release the information because it's an invasion of the person's privacy. I remind them that the person in deceased; they don't respond.

Human remains were found in the same area as personal belongings of Brian Laundrie, Gabby Petito’s fiancé, who has been missing for over a month, officials said Wednesday.

A senior law enforcement official said that what appear to be partial human remains have been found in Florida's Carlton Reserve in a location that had previously been submerged.

There is no confirmation that the remains are those of Laundrie.

"Earlier today investigators found what appears to be human remains along with personal items, such as a backpack and notebook, belonging to Brian Laundrie," Michael McPherson, special agent in charge of the FBI's Tampa office, told reporters.

"These items were found in an area that up until recently had been under water," he said.

Laundrie's parents directed FBI agents and North Port police to the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park where "some articles belonging to Brian were found," Steven Bertolino, an attorney for the Laundrie family, said in a statement.

"Chris and Roberta Laundrie were at the reserve earlier today when human remains and some of Brian’s possessions were located in an area where they had initially advised law enforcement that Brian may be," Bertolino said in another statement Wednesday evening.

"Chris and Roberta will wait for the forensic identification of the human remains before making any additional comments."

The local medical examiner and a K9 unit trained to find human remains were called to the scene, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said.

The Carlton Reserve and neighboring Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park are short drives north of the Laundrie family home. Parts of both areas are expected to be closed to the public "for several days" as investigators comb the area, McPherson said.

"I know you have a lot of questions, but we don't have all the answers yet," McPherson said. "We're working diligently to get those answers for you."

Laundrie is considered a person of interest in Petito's disappearance. An arrest warrant was issued after authorities said he used her debit card without permission.

Petito's body was discovered Sept. 19 at the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area in Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming; a coroner ruled her death a homicide by "manual strangulation." Petito had been dead for at least three weeks, the coroner said.

Petito and Laundrie were on a cross-country road trip, chronicling their travels on social media, before he returned to his parents' home in North Port, arriving Sept. 1 without his fiancée, police said.

Laundrie’s parents have kept a low profile ever since, telling investigators that their son went hiking mid-September and never returned, sparking a national manhunt.

During the search for Petito, 22, police in Moab City, Utah, released body camera video capturing a distraught Petito after an alleged physical altercation with Laundrie.

The short video you posted at the end (the Timeline) lays out positioning, so useful, yet there is little evidence and motive at this point. It says the warrant was issued after the fiancé used her bank card, so the FBI must have video/witness, because otherwise it might be just circumstantial evidence as the card and pin number may have been given under duress (or something else) at some point in the timeline.

Sure odd about the swamp in an already odd, and sad story.

Ellie says Cleo woke up at 1.30am asking for a drink of water – and that was the last time she spoke to her daughter.

The parents woke up again at around 6am to find Cleo had gone, reports News.com.au.

Ellie said: “I went into the other room and the zipper was open.

“Cleo was gone and that was about it for Saturday morning until everything started.”

The child along with her pinks pyjamas and red sleeping bag were nowhere to be found.

Ellie says the tent “was about 30 centimetres from open…I turned to Jake and said: ‘Cleo’s gone’.”

The FBI on Thursday confirmed remains recovered from the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in North Port, Florida, on Wednesday were Florida fugitive Brian Laundrie's.

A comparison of dental records confirmed the 23-year-old's identity, according to the FBI.

Laundrie's former fiancée Gabby Petito, 22, turned up dead near a Wyoming campsite the couple shared in late August. The FBI discovered her remains on Sept. 19.

"On October 21, 2021, a comparison of dental records confirmed that the human remains found at the T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve and Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park are those of Brian Laundrie," the agency tweeted Thursday.

The remains were discovered in the park Wednesday near items belonging to Laundrie.

Steven Bertolino, the attorney representing the Laundrie family, confirmed the findings to Fox News.

"Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the remains found yesterday in the reserve are indeed Brian's. We have no further comment at this time and we ask that you respect the Laundrie's privacy at this time," Bertolino said.

Law enforcement officers visited the Laundrie's home for about two minutes on Thursday afternoon just before the news was announced.

The Laundries themselves helped lead police to the remains, visiting the park Wednesday with a pair of officers and searching an area where they have for weeks insisted their son liked to hike. With water levels significantly lower this week than on Chris Laundrie’s Oct. 7 visit to the same area with investigators, more ground was visible.

Richard Stafford, a lawyer and spokesman for Petito’s parents, told Fox News’ Laura Ingle that the family was not immediately prepared to make a statement.

"They are grieving the loss of their beautiful daughter," he said. "Gabby’s family will make a statement at the appropriate time and when they are emotionally ready."

Numerous criminal profilers and advocates for domestic abuse survivors have speculated that the heated display in public led to an argument between the couple that eventually led to Petito’s death, which Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue ruled a homicide by strangulation earlier this month.
