12 market-goers killed by Saudi-led airstrike in Yemen – local residents
Published time: 23 Nov, 2016 10:10

Twelve civilians were killed after they were hit by a Saudi-led airstrike while riding in a pick-up truck in northwest Yemen, according to residents cited by Reuters.

The passengers were reportedly heading to a local market in the Hiran area of northwest Hajja province on Wednesday when they were struck.
The area is controlled by the Houthi movement.

A spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition declined to respond to Reuters' request for comment. In the past, the coalition has maintained that it does not target civilians, despite numerous accusations and reports to the contrary.

The new deaths come less than two months after 135 civilians were killed by an alleged Saudi-led airstrike at a wedding in the southwestern village of Al-Wahijah, in an attack that the Saudi-led coalition denied.

In March, an apparent airstrike by the coalition hit a market in Yemen's Hajja province, killing 41 civilians and injuring 75 others.

A report released by the Yemen Data Project in September concluded that one-third of Saudi strikes hit hospitals, schools, and other civilian targets across the country. However, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told the Guardian at the time that those figures were “vastly exaggerated,” and blamed Houthi fighters for turning civilian buildings into “command control centers” and “weapons depots.”

The UN also announced in August that airstrikes carried out by the Saudi-led coalition are responsible for the majority of civilians killed in the country's conflict, and called for an international to investigation to take place.

Tensions in Yemen escalated when Shia President Ali Abdullah Saleh was deposed in 2012 and his Houthi supporters – aided by Iran – eventually seized the capital city, Sanaa, in 2014 before advancing to the south, seizing large swaths of the country and sending new President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi into exile in Saudi Arabia.

In March 2015, the Saudi-led coalition responded with airstrikes in order to stop Houthi advances and reinstate Hadi to power, and later launched a ground operation.

Up to 10,000 people have so far been killed since the fighting began, including 3,800 civilians, according to UN estimates.

It's quite unlikely that the USAF hits targets by mistake.

If we are to believe their propaganda, they have the best planes, the best technology, the best ground information network.

So, taking all of this in consideration, I concluded that this was an intentional attack (I'm referring to the raid in Deir Ezzor, Syria, that killed some 80 Syrian Army soldiers).

Of course they will try to convince everybody that it was just an accident.

The civilian death toll is expected to rise as many people are in critical condition, SANA reported.

On Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry condemned coalition's airstrikes in Raqqa on December 7 that left 18 civilians dead. Moscow stated that it is hard to understand statements about "errors" and "negligence" from those whose military operation in Syria had not been requested by the country's legitimate authorities.

Last week, the Pentagon stated that the US-led coalitions airstrikes on the Syrian army positions were an "unintentional, regrettable error." On September 17, US-led coalition aircraft carried out four strikes against the Syrian army near the Deir ez-Zor airport, leaving 62 soldiers killed and some 100 wounded. The Pentagon said that the airstrike was a mistake and was intended to target Daesh militants, while a number of Syrian officials stated that the attack was intentional.

The sources said that two civilians were killed in the village of Qazban and nine others, including five children, were killed in the village of al-Sweidiyeh al-Kabireh after the coalition fighter jets bombed the villages heavily.

The sources added that casualties are on the rise due to serious injuries the civilians sustained in the attacks.

10.01.2017 - We remember how the US aviation carried out an attack near Deir ez-Zor on [Syrian] government forces after which Daesh units launched an offensive in September last year," Chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov said.

The latest example is a B-52 bomber's strike on January 3 without notifying Russia on Sarmada populated area in the Idlib province, which is located in the area where hostilities are halted. As a result, 20 civilians were killed," General Gerasimov said.

The US-led international coalition against terrorism has failed to achieve significant results in Syria, instead rising number of civilian casualties and government forces, he said.

"They have not achieved any significant results. Moreover, a significant number of casualties among civilians and [Syrian] government troops was registered," Gerasimov said.

Last September, US-led coalition aircraft carried out four strikes against the Syrian army near the Deir ez-Zor airport, leaving 62 soldiers killed and some 100 wounded. The Pentagon said that the airstrike was a mistake and was intended to target Daesh militants, while a number of Syrian officials stated that the attack was intentional.

On November 11, the Pentagon released a report which claimed that the US-led coalition's forces struck the Syrian army in Deir ez-Zor as a result of an "unintentional, regrettable error." The Pentagon also said that the US-led coalition's strikes on Syrian army positions would have continued if Russian military officials did not call their colleagues via a deconfliction channel. The deconfliction channel is part of a memorandum of understanding on safety of flights in Syria's airspace signed by the US Defense Department and Russian Ministry of Defense in October 2015.

In response, Yemeni army forces launched missile and mortar attacks against the positions of Saudi mercenaries in the town of Maqbaneh in Ta’iz Province.

Earlier this week, Yemeni army forces, backed by Ansarullah fighters, gained control over five military bases run by Saudi mercenaries in the al-Wazi’iyah District of Ta’izz Province and killed several Saudi-backed militants.

The Saudi war on Yemen, which local sources say has killed at least 12,800 people, was launched in an unsuccessful attempt to reinstate a former government allied to Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s facilities and infrastructure, destroying many hospitals, schools and factories.

"The US, the UK and the UAE are helping Saudi Arabia to gain domination over the Yemeni people," al-Sammad said.

He reiterated that the Yemeni people really want peace, and appreciated the Yemeni nation’s resistance.

In relevant remarks on Sunday, the leader of Yemen’s Ansarullah movement, Abdul-Malik Badreddin al-Houthi, blasted Washington and Tel Aviv for supporting the Riyadh government in its ongoing attacks on the Yemeni civilians.

"Saudi Arabia is the main tool for the attacks on Yemen, while the US and the Zionist regime of Israel are behind the assaults," al-Houthi said while condemning the Saudi attacks on the Yemeni civilians.

"The enemy’s missiles have targeted our children," the Ansarullah leader added.

Al-Houthi underlined that the Yemeni people are fully prepared to sacrifice their lives to preserve their freedom, dignity and independence.

"The presence of Riyadh in Yemen is in line with serving Tel Aviv's interests," the Ansarullah leader said.

In relevant remarks in early February, al-Houthi said that Saudi Arabia is in cahoots with Israel, and therefore considers anyone opposing the policies of the Tel Aviv regime as its own enemy.

Addressing his followers in a speech in the Northern city of Sa’ada and on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day, al-Houthi stated that the Al Saud regime turns hostile toward any nation that resists the hegemonic acts of US and Israeli authorities in the Middle East region.
